I don't see any evidence of her feeling sorry for taking souls. Almost all defenses of her either brush over it or use a totally fabricated claim that she's "purifying" them.

kikyou's not that bad! i think she's just sad that she thinks that the man whom she fell inlove with betrayed her in order to steal the jewel. she died hating and feeling sad. then later the man she loved falls inlove with her own reincarnation! poor kikyou... i feel sorry for her.... all explained in a later episode................the fateful love song from before we met...

I'm not saying she doesn't serve an important purpose in the plot, I'm just saying that she does evil things.
She swallows souls to extend her own unlife. She, being a dead tragic maiden, preys upon other dead tragic maidens.
I feel sorry for her being murdered by naraku and coming back as an undead being to discover that her lover has found somebody new, but I feel more sorry for the poor girl who died tragically and was absorbed by a walking mass of undead grave clay before she could reach the afterlife.

Personally I thought Kikyo was OK at the BEGINNING of the show, but when she was revived I got so sick of her because she plays with Inuyashas feelings. First she hates him, then she loves him again and wants to go to hell with him, then she keeps showing up when Kagome has feelings for Inuyasha and when Inuyasha sees Kikyo, he mostly forgets about Kagome and that hurts her alot.
Taking the souls of young dead maidens is not really nice either. She was one who protected people when she was alive and now she practically eats them. And with Naraku I dont want to start, because he kills her and made her hate Inyuasha and then she finds out it was Naraku and still helps him get all the jewel shards! I mean come on! She should kill Naraku when he is still weak, but no! Thats why I hate her!

An extract from my website: http://www.geocities.com/shikonnotamashii/HvD.htmlQuote: Kikyou uses the souls of dead women and helps herself to Midoriko's soul.Kikyou haters say it is wrong for Kikyou to take souls because it interupts the soul's progession towards the after life. This may vary depending on your views on souls and afterlife. As for myself, I don't believe in any sort of after life. I believe that the life you have now is the only one, and when you die, that's it, no souls moving on or anything like that. Of course, in 'Inuyasha', you have to suspend your disbelief and go with the flow. No where in 'Inuyasha' does it say that Kikyou interupts any natural process to do with souls. Even so, the souls are not doing anything, but when Kikyou uses them to fuel her strength, she is able to continue with her mission to defeat Naraku. I think this is similar to organ donations. When someone is killed in a car crash, it would be a waste if the organs were not used in transplants to save another person's life. Therefore I don't see the harm in Kikyou using the souls. Okay, so some people don't want their organs donated to someone in need of a transplant. However, seeing as Midoriko's will is the same as Kikyou's, I'm pretty sure Midoriko would not mind that Kikyou is using her soul to accomplish her purpose. It's not like Kikyou takes souls for no reason whatsoever. With the soul 'stealing' thing, I come to the conclusion that this is something that haters and supporters of Kikyou cannot agree on because there are a couple of ways you can look at this.

I dunno, it still seems pretty clear cut to me. The main reason why you donate organs is the assumptions that you won't need them any more. With souls it's the very opposite.
I also think people put too much emphasis on what's "natural." People are 'OMG she should stay dead!" Who care's what's interrupting the "natural order"? Nature is a cold heartless b***h. I think what's right or wrong is a lot more important than what's natural.

I don't really like kikyo, but if you didn't notice to all you "kagome fans" kikyo really holds up the story, and the bond between inuyasha and kagome,

Forgive me for being stupid (exams drained my brainpower) but I'm not sure what you mean by opposite. Does it mean that souls are needed by the person even after death? If so, for what purpose. If it's reincarnation, then what about Midoriko's case? After 50 plus years, her soul remained sitting there doing nothing. Again, it probably varies depending on what you believe. Off topic: Brain currently not working... it's i before e except after c. I keep spelling 'beleive' wrong.

If you ingest a soul, you're commiting cannibalism on the most intense and grotesque level.
