I'll name one book (series, actually), though I have countless other favorites. I adore the Hungry City Chronicles by Phillip Reeve.
As for my favorite sci-fi movie, I enjoyed Serenity (as well as the TV series, Firefly). But Star Wars is probably my favorite.

One name: H.G. Wells.
Actually, I haven't read much SciFi, unfortunately. Oooh, but I love Star Trek and I own several novelized books of their episodes and the movie Generations.

I'm gonna have to go ghetto old school in a very literal sense, since the last time I read the series was in my old school about 6 years ago. Drum roll! The Animorphs! It's more half sci-fi, half teen drama, but still the coolest sci-fi series/books I've ever read. Edenborn is second on my sci-fi list of great books, I still need to read the first book sweatdrop . It was so good, obviously the virtual reality bit is nothing new, but now that I think about it, the book resembles what it would be like to live in Gaia, you get rewards from the Mothers, or in our case, the mods, and can purchase things to put in your own little corner of the virtual world, very neat.
Stargate is also a chart topper, both SG-1 and Atlantis, I don't know how the writers do it, I'm just glad I got to meet the director Brad Wright! I knew a guy at my old work and he was Brad's brother in law and his parents golf with RDA! I nearly died, I'm such a loser...

I haven't really read all that much sci fi, so this thread is useful to tell me what to read. At the moment I tend to read books of collected short stories and stuff, I found a book of gay and lesbian sci fi short stories, which was amazing, there were really unusual takes on sci fi.

Movies: Star Wars, Star Trek, I, Robot, Aliens, Predator [Yes, Predator!], M.I.B [Yes, Men in Black], The Terminator, Starship Troopers [maybe], I think that's all of the recent ones. Oldies, I haven't seen too many of, so yeah.
Books: Star Wars series from me.
