I'm quite fond of The Phantom of the Opera as well. whee
I read it several years ago after learning about the musical. I've not read much else by Gaston Leroux, but what I have read doesn't impress me. So I'm quite happy that The Phantom is so wonderful. The detail regarding the house by the lake and the torture chamber really drew me in. And I love how it's written like a fanciful report on "the mystery of the Opera Ghost."
Yomiko, do you have a favorite scene?

I could suggest books until the cows come home. So I'll suggest one book from two of my favorite "light reads" authors.
Christopher Moore, "Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove" (I LOVE this book, actually I love everything he writes, but this is the top. I would suggest reading all his work, along with Palahniuk. But once you get familiar with the settings he discusses his books spring even more vividly to life.)
Chuck Palahniuk, "Choke" (This is a 'hard book to read' in the sense that it can be read as offensive or crude, but it's a great piece of literature.)

xXx)Sweet Dreams(xXx Cornelia Funke : InkHeart
Oooo, Cornelia Funke. I love her work. Especially since my faaaaavorite actor (Brendan Fraser) does audio narration for some of them. Here's my list: Bronte, Emily: Wuthering Heights ((Oiseau De Mort)) Austen, Jane: Pride and Prejudice ((Oiseau De Mort)) Freedman, Benedict and Nancy: Mrs.Mike ((Oiseau De Mort)) Lee, Tanith: Wolf Tower ((Oiseau De Mort)) Lee, Tanith: Wolf Star ((Oiseau De Mort)) Lee, Tanith: Wolf Queen ((Oiseau De Mort)) Lee, Tanith: Wolf Wing ((Oiseau De Mort)) King, Stephen: 'Salems Lot ((Oiseau De Mort)) Just a little note: It seems like mom and I are the only two people in the world who have read Mrs.Mike. The first chapter is really hard to get through, but after that it is an absolutely AMAZING book. Mom gave it to me for my 13th birthday, and even though I've read many wonderful books since then it remains my absolute favorite.
