Sir Ichigo Challenged for homosexual content? o_O I don't understand people. Do they think that if you read a book about homosexuality, you're going to become homosexual yourself? I'm a lesbian. You don't see me going out and chasing boys because I've read a book about a heterosexual relationship. ._. Gah. I'm so confused. Perhaps it's not so much that the Powers That Be are afraid of readers becoming homosexual as They are afraid of readers becoming comfortable with homosexuality. When I went to the church home school group, homosexuality was discussed, but only if everyone had the same point of view (poor, poor lost sinners). Books that are open ended about homosexuality, or present it in a positive light, are probably viewed as objectionable because people who read them may think, 'hey, this isn't so taboo after all.'
Same with many books, I think. It's not that the Powers That Be were afraid of Ibsen's A Doll's House because they think women would all leave their husbands, as They were afraid that it might become less unspeakable.

I read this book a while ago called The Places I never Meant To Be It was really cool because it was all about author's whose books have been banned. It has a short chapter from one of their books and what they think about banning.

Places I Never Meant To Be sounds really cool.
And I have to agree with darktail and Terena here. And anybody else who said the same thing in different words wink .
And I enjoy Tamora Pierce's books. But just because I've read them doesn't mean I'm going to do the things Daine or Keladry or Alanna or any other character does.

annieduck I find it hilarious that books by a lot of those authors I've had to read for school. Same. Maya Angelou was on our required reading list, as well as the Harry Potter books, and A Doll house. Our theme for the year is "banned books." We're gonna be reading all these books that have been banned.

You don't see me going out and chasing boys because I've read a book about a heterosexual relationship. ._. Gah. I'm so confused. In a word. Yes, that is exactly what they are afraid of. If they are lay people (not the cardinal or a big political figure who knows many gay people and knows that's not possible, but you typical redneck fears just that, that his kids will become gay by simply reading that book.) It's ridiculous, but it's true, and what everyone else has been saying about how it's just because then it would become acceptable is also true. I read a book once on discrimination, and it talked about the different forms discrimination comes in, they were the regular ones (outright verbal, outright physical, hidden verbal, hidden physical["accidentally" bumping in the hallways]) and then there was one called devisualizing. It was when the "powers that be" forbid or ostracize any information about the object of discrimination, making them invisible. That leads to stuff like high schoolers thinking "gay" or "queer" means you wear yellow shirts on Thursday. Or that all gays were molested or raped, or had a bad experience with the opposite sex. Anyway, I digress...people are stupid and closed minded, the banning of gay books is the same train of thought as parents of gay kids saying s**t like "I know you're gay, but do you have to FLAUNT it?" being gay sucks, I know, we're just gonna hafta suck it up for a while. Every time gay marriage news came out, Kerry's poll no.s dropped 5 points.

Isn't that the theory that a closet case's mind thinks? if i don't accept it, it doesn't exist. which just casues problems. just like every other suppressed feeling. If they suppress books with homosexual content. they should ban books with heterosexual content. a-sexual content even. you know what should happen a book rebllion. theres no point to baning books. if someone want to read it. they should read it. no reason to ban the book, it's gonna get read anyway. like J.k. Rowling. it's banned by the church. you're not alowed to read it inside a church. or even in a church camp. becasue it supports magic and fantasy. hereas Christianity tries to destroy wiccans. they should ban all things that ban books. 3nodding

Banning books is a very stupid thing to do. People try to get books banned so no one reads them, not just their children, and I think that an act like that should be punishable by law. That is a violation of my rights.
What's really funny is that my mother thinks she controls what I read, but what she doesn't know is that I have read many books on that list, and plan to read many more. rofl

Kalile Alako Wolhay phobia2001 Oh I say that "Mein Kampf" is realy one of the only banned books I would never read. (Mein Kampf= My struggle. It was authored by Adolph Hitler. I'm Jewish. Do the math xp ) Are you afraid that it could make you question your beliefs? 'Mein Kampf' is on my list of books to read. In my case, that's actually why I want to read Mein Kampf. I want to question my beliefs. Then not only read his book, but research the books that inspired his ideology ((which was not his own)), They explain, the full extent of arian superiority and their divine lineage, so on and so forth, ((I was only exposed to this through documentaries, have yet to get my hands on them))

I was really happy to see this thread too. I've always liked looking at lists of banned books and authors and why they were banned. Some are just so ridiculous. A lot of these I've read or have on my to read list.
I know there's a Banned Book Day but I don't know what date. I remember seeing pins that said 'I read banned books.' I thought they were really neat. :3
