Questionable Waffles

The snake shifted in the crate. She had no idea how long she had been sedated, though it had been unnecessary as she had no will to escape. As she let her slitted eyes glance upward at the blinding light pouring through the air holes along the crate's top, the Arbok winced.

Her eyes trailed down to the Marill that was still cowering in the corner. She had watched the thing in her drugged stupor as it had gone through the psychological stages of death. At one point, it had even pleaded with her, promising her riches to spare it. The pokemon once called Malice snerked; the stupid rat was lucky that she had no will to live, much less squeeze the life out of her trapped prey. She continued to ignore it, sure it had at this point gone at least slightly insane as it rocked back and forth.

With a hiss-like sigh the snake flopped her head down again and wished for death as she heard the humans talking around the outside of the crate.

"This the latest shipment for the lab?" The dock worker gestured towards the crate with a sneer. That thing looked heavy. He'd moved enough crates today in his opinion and he wasn't sure where the last shift had left the wheeled carts for moving these stupid things.

"Yeah, this one at least." The shipman turned, kicking the box with his toe for emphasis, creating more noise than movement with the gesture.

"Only one then? That's not too bad. I was expecting worse." The dock worker shrugged, spotting a spare cart nearby. That solved his problem at least. "Hey, what's in there anyway? It heavy?"

"Sorta'. Not as bad as it looks though." Glancing at the warning labels plastered all over the crate, he squinted, scanning the contents list. "Eh, looks like an Arbok from the sound of it. Probably due for testing or something. I don't even know if the thing is still alive in there, but that's not my problem. I was just supposed to deliver it." He shrugged nonchalantly, turning back to his clipboard checklist.

"Less worry if it isn't I suppose," the dock worker chuckled softly. "Least I don't have to worry about it escaping and biting me, right?" He winked, expecting a laugh from the shipman, but receiving only silence. Frowning after a moment of awkward silence, he turned away and began sullenly loading the crate on the cart in silence.

Questionable Waffles

The Arbok coiled as the thunderous clamor from the kick echo'ed in the hollow crate, causing the Marill to flinch and its already aching heart to pound even faster. Malice was feeling annoyed at being disturbed and wanted to bask once more in the dark silence.

Experimentation? She wondered what the humans were babbling about in less than slight curiosity. It didn't really matter one way or the other, as she figured. She hated being alive, so if it would end, so be it. Better to get it over quickly than to let her suffer as the rodent in front of her had.

The crate shifted after a series of scraping noises and the Arbok slid against the wall. This was getting extremely annoying; now the holes on one side pointed toward the ceiling lights, making the inside brighter than before. Shielding her eyes with her tail, she hissed as the Marill bumped into her and started squeaking loudly.

"Shush you," she hissed in her Arbok language. "Or I'll eat you here and now."

The blue rodent's eyes rolled back into its head as he passed out from fear and exhaustion, slumping up against the snaketail.

Well at least it shut him up, she thought, laying her head back down and closing her eyes.

The crate was quickly wheeled over to a truck and loaded via ramp. After making sure the lone crate was well-secured with straps, the dock worker climbed down and slid into the driver's seat. The engine rumbled to life and the truck began on its way towards the lab, bumping over the worn dirt roads. CRONUS didn't bother to pave the roads criss-crossing the island, at least not yet. It wasn't worth the trouble for as little as they were used. Only the path from the dock to the main lab was used remotely regularly, depending on supply shipments.

Lurching to a halt behind the main lab, the man parked the truck and climbed out, repeating the process in reverse to unload the crate and wheel it to the service entrance. The door was opened before he even got there, revealing the impatience with which they were waiting on him.

"It's about time. Get that crate in here now."

Harumphing quietly, the dock worker pushed the cart through the door ignoring the rude security detail at usual. They were always like this, behaving as if they were better than the dock crews just because of their difference in position...

"Put it here and get out. That will be all."

Rolling his eyes, he did so, then quickly removed the crate from the wheeled cart. It was property of the docks afterall. Let them figure out what to do with the crate now. It was their problem. He was gone before the guards could have a chance to object.

"Lazy slackers..." one guard muttered, using a crowbar to pry open the lid of the wooden crate. There was a splintering crack and the lid broke loose, crashing to the floor. Both guards cringed at the sound in the enclosed space then peered inside.

"Hey, is it even still alive? What did they do to this thing? Are they both dead? Better not be, seeing how much money was paid for this stupid thing."

The arbok vowed revenge. Light followed by no light was a welcome relief but the jostling about was getting to her. Her stomach flopped and the stupid rat thing's limp body kept bouncing against her. Luckily the trip finally rolled to a stop.

As the lid was pried away, Malice could see human eyes, two sets, peeping in at her. Humans were the lowest of the species, yet they thought themselves better than the rest. She let out a soft warning hiss to be left alone to die.

The marill slowly opened his eyes and shrieked before running into the wall of the crate and knocking himself silly. Malice rolled her eyes at him; rats apparently lose their sanity much quicker than other animals.

The world plagued her with stupidity; she wanted it all to end now.

"Guess that means it's alive."

"Guess so, smart guy."

"Shut up."

The two guards continued their pointless, good-natured bickering as they reloaded the crate and wheeled it down the hallway. Pausing briefly before a non-descript door in a side hallway, a card was swiped with a soft beeping noise and the door opened.

"It took you two long enough."

"Sorry, Dr. Hakan. It wasn't our fault though! The guys down at the dock..."

"I don't care if it was the governor's fault! You're still late! Now get in here and stop talking!"

The men hurried to wheel the crate into the room as swiftly and silently as possible. Their joking demeanor was long gone and the two seemed most definitely nervous at this point.

"I take it she is tranquilized? Otherwise, not even you fools would be pushing her around with the crate wide-open like that," Dr. Hakan muttered, his attention on a large syringe he pulled from his pocket and held up to the light.

Malice flinched as the sterile, clinical smell of the place burned her nostrils. She was very much awake at this point, though she couldn't say the same for the water rat.

Hearing human voices but not completely versed in their language, she peered her eyes up over the crate to spy; like hell was she going to fight for any human ever again!

A syringe? Had snakes been able to cry, the arbok would have shed an emo tear of joy. EUTHANASIA! Finally, they were putting her out of her misery! Sinking back down the arbok laid still, ready for the end.

Unfortunately for Malice, the injection was far from euthanasia. Rather than ending her troubles, it was far more likely to only give her new ones...but of course, she couldn't possibly know that yet.

"Well, the guys from the dock didn't say anything about that, but I'd say so from the way she's acting. I mean, she's barely moved all this time. Seems pretty docile."

"Fine." Peering into the crate, Dr. Hakan nodded as he tapped the air bubbles from the syringe. "Watch her head just in case." Leaning over the edge of the crate, the doctor swiftly injected the mysterious liquid with practiced ease. Within seconds, he was done and dropping the used syringe into his pocket. "Alright. Let her out of the crate and get out of here. We're done." With that, the doctor headed for the door and disappeared into the hallway once more.

Shrugging to one another, the two guards hurried to release the massive snake into her new "home." Sure, it was a dreary, sterile cell-like room, but it was better than the crate, right?

The snake let them shove her into the room. She vaguely wondered what happened to the rat, but it was a moot point. Malice coiled in a corner and waited for death. And waited. And waited some more.

The realization that she was indeed still alive and would remain so was slow and painful, though technically the serum she had coursing through her veins could have been what hurt. The arbok had heard of seeing red but had never realized it could really happen until now, her eyes glazed over and unbridled rage took over.

She began to toss her body against the door and yell as loud as she could in her language "WHY DIDN'T YOU KILL ME?"
