The doctor moved among those adventurers who had returned, checking for untreated injuries, doing whatever his own simple medicine could do for their wounds. He was no white mage; he could merely make sure the wounds were uninfected, ease the pain, stop the bleeding, bandage the wounds and set them on the road to healing.

Mayor Henrik's eyes were slowly turning darker and darker as reports about the last day's efforts drifted in. Finally he rounded on his people.

"And where were you?"

The room fell silent. No one had ever heard the mayor speak in that tone of voice before. None save Hans, the Doctor, and Carn, who had known him during his adventuring days.

"Where were you, while these brave folks risked life and limb defending land that wasn't theirs? Where were you when they were being shot up, blown up, and washed away by the powerful currents? Where. Were. You?"

No one answered. Maybe no one dared too.

"Rydia!" Henrik barked. Carn was already standing right next to him. The woman jumped to attention.

"Sir?"

"You and Carn, take our forces with you, as many as can be spared from the defense of the village, and go with the adventurers today. Make sure nothing like this happens again. I will not have them facing armies without us at their backs again!"

Rydia and Carn nodded, and headed off to select their forces.

"Hans, get one of the air mages...spirits, get all of the air mages. We need some sort of device that they can use to signal they're in trouble, something that can be seen in the sky from here. Work on it."

"Will do, Mayor." And Hans ambled off as well.

Henrik sighed, and sank down in his chair. This was not going well. It was true that they had not been attacked, and the dam was broken...the fuel depot, he heard, was destroyed. But the dam had been destroyed by the monsters, and the fuel depot by...some other terrorists? It didn't make any sense...

While his adventurers, the ones he had sent into the conflict, had been pinned down, driven to extremes by Skinner's hired mercenaries. And been unable to accomplish much on their own. Well, he intended to do something about that.

Kalis, half awake, sat by a table. Like he'd been all night, he was beside the window, head propped up on one hand with the eyes cracked just barely open, with the refreshing breeze blowing in on him.

Only he shivered in that breeze.

Skin dry from towling off and hanging clear of all wet surfaces, he still felt like a human sponge.

There he sat with his claymore and two knives set out on the table out of their sheaths, which were sitting with small wet spots beneath them, upturned, on the floor. Outside teh window, one could see a long, thick green coat, a dark pair of jeans, and a discreet pair of boxer shorts, drying on a line. Just inside that window were drying gauntlets and greaves.

He the upward eye slowly, watching the mayor. His face was smooth and reserved as it had been before. But his eyes burned with sorrowful determination and a sullen fury. The people had come back yesterday. All but two of them.
His charges were still missing.

Kalis stood, slowly, shivering and brushing his arms as if they were damp still. He was there in his same light, loose black undershirt. Otherwise, he had loose thin pair of pants that looked more appropriate for sleeping in than anything, tucked into hiking boots, his leather gloves on, and a scarf thrown about his neck.

"Mayor. I'm sorry about... well, I could only get one away with me at the time. I should have..." but he didn't know what he should have done. Leaning up against a wall, he hung his head and sighed.

"How've things been here while we were out...? Progress?"

The Mayor shook his head, gentling his voice. One hand reached out to clasp the young man's shoulder. "It isn't your fault, Kalis. If we had been less concerned with preserving our own necks, you wouldn't have needed to face all that you did."

Kalis would suddenly feel a woolen blanket wrapped around his shoulders from behind. It was the doctor's assistant, Celia, a young girl just beginning to be a woman. Kalis may have noticed in his time there than she was nervous, around everyone, and didn't speak much.

The Mayor's eyes followed all this, then he answered Kalis's question. "None of our lands have been attacked. The fuel depot lies in ruins, or so I'm told, and, well...you saw to it that the dam was no more." The Mayor grinned, face wrinkling it into a smile. "Beyond that I have not heard much. We have had few casualties...a handful of my summons were destroyed, but I don't believe any lives have been lost, yet."

Kalis' jaw clenched tight, and he looked slowly to the men whom he'd feared the worst about there on the cots. They were alive. But...

He didn't believe it.

Still looking somewhat grim, Kalis nodded firmly.

Looking back over his shoulder in suprise, his eyes settled on Celia. He looked at the blanket over himself blankly, and slowly drew it shut with his hands. Well, he should be glad at least he wasn't showing any injuries to worry the doctor or her over. "Thank you." he directed to no one in particular.

Slowly, a smile spread thinly across his lips. His eyes still burned.

"Thank you." He repeated, turning his look back to the girl, and then slowly studying each person in the room. Maybe, he'd been just a little bit afraid. Maybe, it was time to pull out the all the stops. Like back home. He knew no one would stop him if he got moving. Maybe, this time his people would not end up in flames because of it.

"I think today, things are going to be a little bit different." the grim smile of determination stuck to his face.

Celia mumbled a "Your welcome" to her feet, her face flushing a bright red. She moved on to tend to the others, then help the cooks prepare breakfast.

The Mayor returned Kalis' firm nod with one of his own, matching his determined expression. "That, young man, is what I very much hope, and intend to see to."

Aiolos woke up. His eyes were drowsy and wanted to go to bed again, he smacked himself at the thought. Today was another day to go out and risk his life. Great. That thought wanted Aiolos to sleep again, but with another slap to the face, he was awake once more.

The air smelled of breakfast, and Aiolos for one thing would need it. He looked around to see if anyone else was still in the meeting house.

It was a while later into the day that Kalis decided it was time to clean up the things laying about.

The sun up higher in the sky, warmer time of day. He carefully draped the blanket over a chair, and took care of resheathing all his blades, checking to be certain they were dry, and wandered outside with his gauntlets and greaves in hand.

Outside, he could be seen picking his things off the line, considering them, and at one time or another wringing things out. He wandered off toward wherever it was he kept his other things.

In a few minutes, he'd come back into the building in a mostly dry coat and jeans, sword and knives strapped on again. One could note, however, that he'd kept the scarf, if it really mattered. Gauntlets and greaves apparantly had been seen as dry enough too, covering his limbs before the conflict was even seeming to pick up again.

The smell of food was indeed wafting from the kitchen, and plates of breakfast dishes of all kinds were laid out on the long table. Now that they had water again, the villagers were being more generous with their food.

It was in the middle of breakfast time that Steve, followed closely by Carn and Rydia, came in to report.

"Mayor..." All three began at once, then stopped. Carn fixed Steve with a glare, and the young archer shifted uncomfortably.

"What is it?" Henrik asked, motioning for Steve to report first.

The young man stepped up, swallowing nervously. "It's the two missing mages, sir. The ones who didn't come back yesterday. They've...they've come home."

"Why, that's wonderful news..." Henrik began, his face crinkling into a smile...until he saw the wetness lying in wait at the corner of Steve's eyes. "What's wrong?"

"It's Erik, mayor..." the archer went on, referring to the air mage who had gone out with the bombs yesterday. "He's dead."

The Mayor's face fell. "Oh." Slowly, he rose to his feet. "He'll be given a hero's honors, and all of us shall remember him for his courage. I will see to the funeral rites personally." Henrik paused, then asked, "The other mage, is he also...?"

"No," the archer said quickly. "Jim's alive."

A sigh of relief, and Henrik seemed to sag, leaning on his cane again.

"I'd best be getting back to my post now, Mayor. Can't leave the bright forest undefended."

"Of course..." Henrik waved him on, and the young man turned to go.

Aiolos grabbed a blanket and stuffed inside one of his large cloak pockets. He would need something if he wanted to do that flying trick again, one sheet held up barely for two people, he wanted one in case he had to carry someone again...

He lost a blade or two in the battling, but it seemed that his conductor's whistle was more use then he thought. Aiolos gripped the small whistle underneath his shirt as he walked outside, where he saw Kalis preparing his things.

"Ready?" Aiolos asked him, glancing at the blades.

"Whenever you are." Kalis grinned solemnly, pulling the strap of his sword tight, and placing the black had back on his head.

A single drop of water ran down the rim, out to it's edge, crawled partway around the bottom before falling, and landed squarely on his nose.

((Actually, they're not announcing the next objective, or some such, for another three hours, so I'm probably gonna log off and get some more work and such down now. Hopefully it'll mean less being bothered once things start.

You can have Kalis tail you or stay here; whichever you prefer; for the moment.
I'll be mostly online, but working.))

Shade awoke, sleeping a bit off from everyone else, he turned on his cloak over night to make sure that no one would see him if there was indeed an attack. Standing up, he unseeingly stretched and yawned, before walking to the exit of the house.

Jacknife yawned and stretched out on the cot. audible popping noises came from all of his stiff joints, which pretty much meant all of his joints. He rolled over and there was a prompt thump. "Ow..." He grunted from his place, now on the floor. "I feel... better." He stated as he got up from the floor and shook the sleep from his head. He looked down at his guns before he bent down to pick them up. When he did so he saw some exposed skin on his wrist "And... greener? Ah, Mozz must have been here eh?" He retrieved the weapons and tucked them back into their places. He wasnt sure how he had slept in all the rest of his gear, but he had.

He walked over to the table and grabbed a roll and a glass of Oragne Juice before sitting back down to munch on them.

"Help!" the little boy crowed, bursting into the building. "There's a man, in the southern forest. He's not one of us, I think he's coming after us! He could be dangerous, I- they told me to get help!" the little boy was frentic, almost hopping up and down.

Shade sighed and gripped the hilt of his dagger, knowing in such a place his rifle would next to useless. Of course, he was unseen, but he had heard the calll for help and would answer it. So, he exited the building and headed outwards.
