I love marching SOO much!! I guess the reason i love it so much is because it comes so easily to me. I don't really have to work very hard at anything in band. I can play new pieces with ease, i can march and play without any problems, etc.... That sounds kind of like bragging now that i read it. But i'm just being honest, i don't have many problems when it comes to band. I'm lucky though, i know that lots of people do have to work to be great and i sympathize with them.

Keeping my elbows up and out while moving.
My right shoulder gets sore from supporting the weight of the sax from such an awkward position.
I have no problems with it sitting down, though.

My neck is really tight right now, so horn angles hurt, especially since I play trombone. There is one spot where I have to put my horn almost straight up so that I don't hit three trumpet players who pass right in front of me. Another hard thing is marching 4 to 5.

For me it's keeping the trumpet steady while backwards marching.

And keeping my heels off the ground while backwards marching.

Marching and playing at the same time. I am new at marching. It's just too hard for me.

holding my horn up is a b***h when we get to the last song, and when i backmarch at a fast tempo i tend to crouch a bit. sweatdrop

Remembering all the horn snaps. Oh, and making them all snappy like. Flute+horn snap=not always that fast.

Other than that, I don't have much trouble with anything. I love to march and I love marching band! It makes me really sad that this will be my last year and then I'll never be able to do it again! (unless it's in college.) I want to make a Corp with woodwinds in it, because I think that even us woodwinds should be granted that kind of experiance. 3nodding

All that about the slides...same here. In three words:

UPPER BODY ORIENTATION!!!! D<

I'm a clarinetist. What do you expect? We're the butts of upper boidy orientation.

We always start our shows at 180, so fast tempos aren't quite a problem. Downbeat initiation!

just the fact I start having trouble getting enough breath because I've never had a lot of stamina for moving. I'm forcing myself to go for about 8 measures not moving before breathing now to try and increase that though.
Keeping my instrument steady enough to play too is a problem (Cursed little horn mouthpiece burning_eyes twisted scream )

im a junior, and i havent found anything too difficult about marching over the past couple years...until our visual techs introduced our new and "improved" straight-legged marching style!!! i hate this style, it makes us look like nazis, and bent-knee is just as good if it can be made to be uniform! look at the cavaliers, they use bent-knee style marching and still blow everyone away at championships!!! grrr, i hate straight-leg marching...it blows massively

I'm pretty good at playing and marching (the drum majors have christened me The Backwards Marching Goddess cool ), I think my major problem is NOT breaking set to go kill freshmen who can't dress to the line/trumpets who spread their feet apart when they're supposed to be together/the BD when he goes on one of his tirades. My patience has a very short fuse.
I know exactly how you feel. 40% of my section are freshman, and one of them has a really hard time dressing, even when we're warming up with blocks. I can't say anything because I'm not the section leader, and I don't think he'd pay attention to me (or retain anything I say...) The one problem I have is one of our sets this year is that I have to do a follow-the-leader (in which the leader doesn't lead it right) with my horn to the box with large steps and long notes. I can hardly get the notes to not bounce, especially with the tempo being quarter note=80 at double time. Otherwise, I'm pretty good.

The hardest thing about marching for me is when the drill writer has me 12 behind the front sideline on the 30 yard line and expects me to jazz run to the front sideline on the 5 yard line in 12 counts, WHILE doing a slide. It might not have been so bad though if I didn't have short legs and wasn't the shortest person in our marching band, standing proud at 4'11".

The other thing thats even harder is not talking while on the field. Our new band director has one of the worst philosphies when it comes to cleaning drill. NO TALKING AND NO HELPING IT WILL CLEAN ITSELF. You know what I say? BS! A lot of the freshman need individual help and not being a field staff who is hired, I can't say anything even when the techs don't catch anything. A lot of the freshman didn't even go to the first day of freshman camp so they don't even know how to march, but we cant help them. It is the most frustrating thing i've ever had to go through.

I have the same problem. i can never roll step right when im sliding. Also, back sliding?! What a pain! Just so you know, you shouldn't lock your knees when standing/marching no matter the situation. If you lock your knees, the circutlation in your legs cuts off, and you pass out. Just FYI there wink .

I have trouble doing a roll step... it was kind of funny one of my bd's came up and said, you know you're a much better backwards marcher... ironic cause a lot of people suck at bw's marching. but other than that I think the other thing that's getting me is running out of breath. We just got done with our first movement and I'm always out of breath at the end.
And last but not least ((sorry this is so long)) is my traverses and keeping my body straight to the sideline.
