Gathering up some of the sliced dark meat, Steps leaned over to put it on the boy's plate, saying to him in a whisper, "If you eat some salad for your mom I'll teach you a secret about wishbones." Sitting back up straight, he thought for a moment, "Well, not much really. I've kind of been looking around hardware stores, and a couple of furniture stores, but I guess I need to figure out what all I need and have the room for first."

Deciding that was pretty much all he'd been doing, since aside from sleeping it really was, he gestured to Remi with the fork, "What about you?" He was pretty much happy with any part of the chicken, and in his family, women and children were always served first. Normally in that order, but Gavin had seemed antsy.

Gavin perked up at the mention of secrets. He didn't have a clue what wishbones were, but he wanted in on a secret! Then he could show Haki and she'd call him a hero again. He nodded, though reluctantly, and stabbed his fork into a piece of lettuce. Watching him stuff it into his mouth and attempt to chew it, Remi smiled.

"I'll have to remember that trick next time I want to get him to eat something that's actually healthy," she said. She considered his next question, not sure if he was talking about the chicken or her activities over the past few days. Might as well answer both.

"I'll just take some of the white meat, thanks. As for what I've been up to, taking care of this one..." she tilted her head toward Gavin "...is a full time job in and of itself as you can probably tell."

Gavin chomped on another piece of lettuce. Figuring that two pieces were more than enough in his toddler brain, he piped up. "Want secret!"

Serving her some of the white meat, he flashed a smile, "All boys like secrets, especially if they can use them to impress their friends. I should know, it still works on me sometimes." Might as well tell the truth. In fact, that's how his mother had gotten him to tone down frat boy life, by offering to tell him how his father always managed to stay so calm and collected. Of course, the information hadn't been of much use to him, but he had started studying to learn it.

Deciding he wouldn't deprive the boy of the secret, the reached to the chicken and plucked out the wishbone, holding it up with one end facing Gavin, "Well, if you let it dry, then two people can pull on it. And when it snaps, whichever person is holding the bigger side gets to have their wish come true." Or the other has to do a dare, depending on whether you still believed in wishes coming true. But he wouldn't tell him that part, hope in the mystical was good for a kid.

"I'll have to remember that too," Remi gave him a mischievous grin before taking a bite of the meat he'd put on her plate. With a pleased 'mmm' she figured she might have to get Eve to cook for her more often. She'd never had chicken that tasted this good.

Gavin stared at the wishbone. He didn't fully understand all of what the man was saying, but the words 'pull,' 'bigger side,' and 'wish' made some sense, so he just mentally filled in the blanks. Carefully he reached out and grabbed the other end with his tiny hand.

"Pull now?" he asked, waiting with anticipation. He wanted his wish to come true!

"Well," Stephan started, stretching the word out a bit, "We could pull now, but it would be a lot harder to break." Probably not a good enough reason for the boy, "Besides, don't you want to think about what you want to wish for?" Holding it lightly, he added, "At least think about it until dinner's over. But... If your mom thinks it's ok?" He looked toward Remi for an answer, planning either way to barely pull when it came time to break it. Just enough that the boy would be able to tell he was trying and not just letting him get it.

"Why don't you wait Gavin," Remi smiled at her son, giving something for him to hope for at the end of dinner other than bedtime. "You two can pull it before dessert."

With a slight pout, Gavin relinquished his grasp on the wishbone. What was he going to wish for again? He'd probably spend all of dinner trying to remember.

"It's still so weird for me to think of myself as 'mom,'" Remi laughed at herself, returning to her food. "I'm reminding myself of my own mother these days. All the nagging and such, though I don't know if that's a good thing."

Setting the wishbone down on the table before proceeding to serve himself some salad and potatoes, he laughed, "Yeah, I don't know if I'll ever be able to consider myself a dad. Hopefully I won't turn into my dad though, he was kind of... I don't know, distant." He shrugged, not really thinking much of it. All of his friends growing up had had parents like his, busy bodies that were rarely home, but he assumed it would be different raising a kid on his own. He couldn't exactly expect the kid to raise itself, right? Maybe he should read some parenting books, soon. Picking up a piece of chicken, he grinned, "I bet you're not that bad. Just remember that there's always someone worse."

Remi had grown up with at least one parent always home with her, but she'd had known people with distant parents. She didn't want to prod into his family life, knowing that it was usually a sensitive topic for some people. No need to destroy the comfort level now.

She laughed. "I guess you're right. Though I do wish there was some way to parent clumsiness out of a kid. I'm stuck in debt to one of your neighbors because he tripped and broke a priceless lamp or something like that."

Gah...Marc. No need to bring that to the forefront of her mind now. Changing the subject,

"Speaking of your neighbors, have you met any of them yet? I think I know just about everyone in your building now."

"Um... Aside from the kids, not really," he admitted, "Though I've gotten a few notes from a guy named Marc, don't remember what floor he lives on though." He didn't really have much of an opinion on the parenting out clumsiness, though for convenience it did seem like a good idea. Of course, if you were able to parent traits out of kids they'd kind of become like playdoh. Genetic playdoh, interesting thought. To himself, he started to think about what his own daughter would be like, whether she'd have some annoying trait that he'd want to try and parent out. Well, nothing could really be that annoying, right?

"Ah yes, Marc," Remi said apprehensively. "That's who I'm indebted to. Haki's his daughter, so Gavin likes going over there alot."

Which meant that she ran into him more often than she liked. Those awful costumes were in the back of her closet, having never even been taken out of their packaging. Marc'd made a comment on it earlier today, but she tried to block those thoughts out of her head.

"Just be careful if you ever go into his apartment. The first time I met him I was dropping off Haki and ended up walking in on him and Hadrian coming out of the shower."

She raised her eyebrows meaningfully, hoping that would give Steps a hint as to what exactly the two were doing in the shower. She didn't want to say it in front of Gavin. As far as the little boy knew, they were just having bathtime together.

"Oh.... Oh." Stephan said, taking a moment to realize what she meant. He cringed a bit, more from the thought of the mage he'd met in the labs being anything but asexual than from anything else, "Well, hopefully I won't have to worry about that too much." He didn't have anything against either of the men, but from their personalities, what he'd gathered at least, he didn't see himself spending a lot of time with either.
PostPosted: Thu Aug 03, 2006 9:09 pm

"Yeah, my thoughts exactly," she chuckled a bit. "But they're really nice once you get past the initial shock. Well, Hadrian's really nice. Marc can be irritating."

Finishing up the last of her chicken, she moved on to the rest of her salad. It occurred to her how social she'd been here on the compound. At college she'd had her small group of friends. Here she knew almost everyone on the compound. The realization surprised her slightly, though she didn't show it.

Gavin, on the other hand, had finished off his entire plate quickly. He wanted to pull that wishbone, not to mention get to dessert. He'd started getting a bit tired, but there's nothing like dessert to keep a boy awake.

"I done! Dessert yet?"

Apparently Remi had yet to teach the little boy patience.

"I'm sure, but I don't think either of them will like me too much. Especially not if they ever meet my parents. They're kind of... Freakishly traditional." He shrugged, "I don't really have much of an opinion either way. I don't really have to worry about it, so I don't make any enemies by taking a side." When Gavin spoke up, he coudn't help but crack up a bit. Honestly, he wasn't surprised by the boy's impatience, he'd been just like that at his age, according to his nanny at least. He left it to Remi to decide for him though, and went back to chewing his way through his potatoes and the remains of his salad.

Remi hadn't really even considered the two men's relationship to be anything out of the ordinary. Sure it wasn't conventional, but she didn't really have an opinion one way or the other over whether or not it was appropriate. It just was. No two ways about it. Plus, anyone could tell that those two loved each other. Still, no need to get into a debate over dinner. This was about her and Steps, not Marc and Hadrian.

"We still have to finish our dinners Gavin," she said, shaking her head with a grin. "Once everyone's done we can have dessert."

Speaking of which, she thought she might as well announce what exactly dessert was.

"I bought a pie. I know it's not fresh like the restaurant or homemade, but it was the best I could do. It's spiced apple, even."

See? She could remember some of the small details.

He had gotten a bit uncomfortable with where the conversation had shifted, he'd gotten a lot of hell for his right wing father's protests through high school, and even though he didn't share the same beliefs, felt a bit guilty about them. So, he was glad for the change of subject back to dessert. He sped up his eating a bit, hoping not to make Gavin wait too much longer, and was finishing one of his last bites of potatoes when Remi announced what it was. Setting his fork down, he cracked a smile, straightening up in his chair, "I'm sure it'll be great."
