Hai Tien you guys have good guesses ^___^ but like I said my guess are based on the origin of there name, and come on Vincent japanese? are you guys f'ing retarded? And Barret is not a american first name, its a last name however. And by my guess by last name that Cloud Strife is French, just most of the FF8 cast (Squall, Zidane pronounced Zidaan, Zell, Rinoa, and Selphie are all french name's, Seifer is a german name)
Names have don't signify which country of origin that a character would have originated from. You can have an American who's name is Jin Tae because his parents decided to name him a Korean name, nevermind the fact that none of them are Korean. In fact, I have a friend named Heather, but she's a full blooded Korean that was studying overseas at the college I attented.
Since Advent Children, the most realistic visual representation of the Final Fantasy VII characters, was made by a Japanese company, all the characters have some traits that make them look Japanese (Cloud's particularly round face, for one).
Visually, I'd always seen Vincent as European. Perhaps from Italy, or Scotland. Any of them could be from anywhere, not exclusively from Japan.

Any of them could be from anywhere, not exclusively from Japan.sorry for using that language, but what I meant was that Vincent doesn't even look Japanese or seem Japanese to me, and I understand your point but I was just making an observation based on the origin's of there names, but I wouldn't be surprised if the characters are german or greek or whatever, because FF7 seems like it would take place in Eurasia rather then North America
