I'm currently with 1&1, imagine that, they're in my signature. :O But yeah, they're a fast host, plenty of disk space, and bandwidth, (50gb disk/500gb bandwidth) and I haven't had a problem with them. They might be overselling, but I don't really mind, since I don't use my websites that much anyways. ^^; But I heard that LunarHosts, are a good company, that doesn't oversell even with their packages.

I've been using DreamHost for a few months and I'm very happy with them. They don't have the most spectacular reliability, but the occasional downtime doesn't bother me that much. I'm not running a busy forum or business or anything, just a website where I host the occasional file and screw around with mod_rewrite and PHP and Python. They don't have phone customer service, only have email/Web. I've never contacted their support, so I can't say how good it is, but AFAIK it's pretty good. Whenever I have questions, I just bother people in their IRC channel (#dreamhost on irc.freenode.net). They use their own control panel. I've never tried cPanel or anything else, so I can't compare them, but I'm fine with it. You have the freedom to do pretty much whatever you want -- .htaccess, PHP, Ruby on Rails, CGI scripts, SSH access, compiling your own copies of different things -- as long as you don't consistently use enough resources to cause major problems. The control panel lets you easily install things like WordPress, phpBB, Gallery and MediaWiki. I've never tried it, though. I wish they'd upgrade PHP and Python, though. They only use PHP 4.4.2 and 5.1.2 and Python 2.4 is only 2.4.1. Not really a problem, it just bothers me. Edit: And, as I forgot to say, they have promo codes so that you can save a lot of money when signing up (up to $97, depending on how the promo code was set up and what you're signing up for) and then can create your own promo codes and get money when other people sign up. I don't know how this is profitable for them, but...

$6 a month is far from expensive, I mean 1&1 has a $2.24 a month package, which is 5gb disk space, 200gb bandwidth, which should be more than enough. You still get PHP, and 10 Databases, 90-day money back guarantee and stuff. Feel free to click the link in my signature if you plan on registering. sweatdrop

Chocolate Mousse I used to have my own domain, where I paid for the hosting, so Cpanel is pretty useful to me.
If you ever go with paid hosting, don't use Surpasshosting, they screw you over sooner or later. OMG You too? Freaking Surpass. At a forum I used to go to, everyone said how awesome they were. About 3 months into my year of hosting, I had some russian a** hack my site and use it to send spam, and they suspended my account without any type of warning. And then they set my support ticket to incative and didn't reply to my emails until a week later(after I sent them a email basically telling them I'd be expecting a refund if they didn't restore my account within a few days) with some stupid excuse of "Oh, our help desk wasn't letting anyone see your ticket for some reason duhurrrr." Yeah, if their help desk did something like that they need to get a new one. And before it was solved, I posted on their forums asking why they might not be replying, and all of the members treated me like an idiot. Ugh. Oops, sorry. Rant-ahoy. Still, if you feel like putting up with possible crap like that, their OC plans are really nice. Anyway, right now, a friend is hosting my website. But I recently also signed up for http://www.50webs.com and they only give you 60mb but it's pretty good for someone who doesn't use a lot of space. Also, if you are looking for a free domain, i'd recommend http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ all you have to do is put the little button on your front page. cool I remember doing that post for hosting types of things a few years ago. All the forums were so boring that it took me a long time to get enough... and it was just too much effort. D:
