It was a mistranslation because of the last syllable being pronounced as 'su' for the 'th' sound. Wikipedia has more in detail biggrin

You're right but it's not so much of a mistranslation as it is more of an translation for English-speakers (of course we have no problem with pronouncing 'th'. It's nearly the same reason why Sephiroth's name is pronounced "Sephirosu" (Sephiros). It's just the way they pronounce the "th". Kudos to you. biggrin

Unfortuantely, FFVII is severely plagued by mistranslations, the "Aeris-Aerith" being one of many, like the scorpion thing, and many times where Aerith says "it" where she should have said "you" or something else.

Its like an arguement, Aeris is better! No wait Aerith is better! They're just Japan and American Translations. Personally, I like aeris better. =)

I'm a newb to this guild but I believe that the original name areith is better besides I know that arieth is the japanese version, because my friend saw the japanese version and he played it and since he is japanese he could read what they were saying

I thought Aerith in japanese was read Aeris...
No, it's spelled Earisu, because the Japanese charecter "su" represents both "th" and "s."

Well I lik ethe Nmae Aeris(cause i use it for my Roleplays). But I thought it mean something, I just cnat think of it.

It means Earth in Japanese, according to Wikipedia. .

About the earth thing... She IS the last Cetra, so that name is fitting, because Cetras are part of the earth.

I'm agreeing here. If one were to use a standard English-Japanese phonetic translation, then the direct translation of her name would be Earisu- which can also be pronounced Aeris or Aerith. In Japanese, an -s ending and a -th ending is pronounced the same way. It's really just a matter of preference. The -u at the end is included in the characters for her name (the last character is "su") because, as far as I know, it's considered strange to end a Japanese word in a consonant, and the u is just sort of attached to the "s" character. When her name is pronounced, though, the u is usually really fast or ommited.

Actually... the wikipedia statement of the "th" to "s" being one of the mistranslations in the game is false. (Much like it's old statements of Red XIII being 48 in present game time.) Both spellings are techniqually correct as previously stated. You cannot say that KH corrected any error either because the "s" spelling of the name continues to appear in later publishings of SE. The "th" spelling only really occurs in KH and fan-made merchandise.

There are different ways to read some japanese words, and one was mis-translated into Aeris instead of Aerith.

Thatt mistranslation may be true. Because there was another mistranslation like when you were fighting the scorpion and it says "Attack when it's tail is up" when it was supposed to be "Don't attack when its tail is up"

ah yes, i do remember seeing that now...but there is another mistranslation (typo) in the game, the sector 7 slums... when you see that guy that says only "uuuuhhh" and "ahhhh" cloud and aeris walk out and aeris says "this guy are sick" lol, i found it amusing... razz
