Id like to see a couple of member come up with some sort of leasson, that'd be pretty cool. I'd write one involving a bit o' theory but im not quite comfortable with it myself to write it for anyone to leanr from.

Sounds like fun. If you want to see some lessons or whatever, I'll be more than happy to share what I know. I just don't want to be putting work up for one person, though. Let me know if your interested and I may start posting things.

Otherwise I'm just going to say my favorite tab site is
Powertabs

which requires the program from
Power Tab

Usually making a tab from that takes more time, so people put in the effort to make them extremely accurate. I mean some tabs are perfect. Plus it has playback if you forgot how the song goes. It also has sheet music, to help your reading. Very cool if you ask me.

Edit: All right, so I went ahead and made a lesson on scales and modes.
Tell me what you guys think. Do you like it? Do you all already know this stuff? Should I continue and make another lesson?

Here are some basic blues licks.

(BU)=Bend Up (RE)= Release (HO)=Hammer On (PU)=Pull Off
(V)=Vibrate /=Slide

Basic blues licks.
e-------------------6---------------6---8---8(BU)---6-------------------------
B-----------6--8------8(V)----6/7------------------------------8----6----8(V)
G----5/7------------------------------------------------------------------------
D--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

e--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B-----2/3-----------------------------------------------------------------------
G--------------5----3-----------------------------------------------------------
D-------------------------3(HO)5----------------------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And when you Hammer on your fifth fret, do it continously. Like 3-5-3-5-3-5-3-5. But make sure it ends with five.

I would like to see it, even though I have seen a few things you've said in other posts.

I wanted to make a lesson on the Primary Chords, though not quite as big as my other one.

Primary Chords:

If you were to make a chord progression using the tonic (I), the subdominant (IV), and the dominant chords (V) you would be using the primary chords.

Lets take a look at applying this to C-maj. The tonic chord for C major is C major (duh), the subdominant F major and the dominant G major.

Play a I-IV-V chord progression now. Hear how nice those chords sound together? C Ionian is made up of C D E F G A B.
C maj is made of C E G
F maj is made of F A C
G maj is made of G B D

Check that out. We got every note covered in those three chords. This means you can harmonize every note in the major scale with these chords.

Spiffy huh?

Which means that if you want to make a simple song in the key of C, you can just shuffle these chords around:
*. C major (C E G)
*. D minor (D F A)
*. E minor (E G B)
*. F major (F A C)
*. G major (G B D)
*. A minor (A C E)
*. B diminished (B D F)

This isn't so much a lesson, as general advice for life.

I've always believed that the idea of parents forcing their kids to learn to read music on piano first before they can have guitar lessons is a ridiculous one. You learn to read the music for the instrument you play, for two reasons - clefs, and brain-speed. Piano is written in two clefs: treble and bass. If you want to learn most non-keyboard instruments, you only need one clef, not both. Learning the other one would be a complete waste of time. Also, Viola or Cello, not sure which one, is written in another clef that's not treble or bass, so it would be even less helpful to have piano lessons if you wanted to learn this instrument.

eh... i think understanding the transformation from guitar to any form of music is based on piano... im a horrible pianist... but piano is almost as helpful as guitar... for writing harmonies and understanding tonality from all the different views... plus, any intrument can relate to piano - so transposition of parts is easy if you play piano... so i guess piano isnt important for guitarists - as much as they are for music theorists... but i will say - if you want to get better at guitar, theory is the way to go... i got
|--------------------------------------------------------------| <- this much better just by learning theory... well not as much thoery - but learning how to apply theory to the guitar... any of you know any advanced theory resources online(free)

Has anyone tried Guitar Port from line 6? Check out the review I posted in the review sticky about it... Honestly, I was able to pick up on things so quickly with their lessons and the songs you download. (You can download say, Stairway to Heaven - with or without the guitar parts and play along with the rest of the "band") The tab is also downloaded and scrolls with the music... the actual amp settings for the song are set automatically.. and you can slow down parts or loop just the bridge or something.

It's a pretty neat gadget for anyone, I would think... you can learn a lot from it, or if you already know the music well, you can at least have a back-up band.. smile Mine cost 99$

Yup, yup!

I decided to focus on the I IV V chord progression because I think that the I IV V chord progression is a very basic chord progression that is very worth knowing. It is a bit overused and cliche, though. If you were to use any of those chords when writing a song in C, because none of those chords have sharps or flats, it'd be hard to go "wrong". The only thing you might have to worry about sounding "iffy" is the B diminshed chord.

I just don't seem to get it. I look at scales, I do them. Then I wonder...how the hell is this gonna help? Can someone please explain to me the importance of scales, because I don't really see what it's about and how do scales work exactly anyway?

This excerise gets your fingers really going man. Very good for a beginner to learn alternate picking and what not.

-----------------------------------1234-5432--------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------1234---------------5432-------------------------------------------------
---------------------1234-----------------------------5432------------------------------------------
--------------1234-------------------------------------------5432-----------------------------2345
-------1234---------------------------------------------------------5432---------------2345-------
-1234----------------------------------------------------------------------5432-2345--------------

---------------2345-6543-----------------------------------------------------------------------3456
--------2345---------------6543---------------------------------------------------------3456-------
-2345-----------------------------6543-------------------------------------------3456--------------
-------------------------------------------6543-----------------------------3456---------------------
--------------------------------------------------6543---------------3546----------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------6543-3456-----------------------------------

If you can see my pattern its easy. You just go up and down the strings going one string up on the fret board every time you start over on the high E. The next pattern in the exercise would be 7-6-5-4, then 8-7-6-5, then 9-8-7-6, then 10-9-8-7. Just run through this as fast as you can using alternate picking. Go as fast and as long as you can, try doing this for about 5 minutes of none stop up down up down. It will get your picking and fretting hand in good shape.

Very good exercise. I remember when I started it years back I just about threw my guitar through the window. xd .....not really, but it pissed me off!
