dani put away her PADD in one of her flightsuit's many pockets and pulled out a pack of playing cards. "wanna play something? we still have 10 minutes." she glanced over at jet and spike who had probably been standing there bored for the past half an hour.

Reico drifted in right on time, an hour later then from when he had told the new pilots to arrive at the briefing room. His... 'Flight Suit' if it could be called that, seemed more like a suit that was built for wearing power-armor, as in a neural interface suit, with connectors running everywhere. His colorful appearence was no longer there, since it was replaced by the dull black of his flight suit.
"Good. You are all here. Stow the cards, Pilot, and lets get to it." Reico says as he walks on his hindlegs(!) to the holo-table around the room, which was circular with benches all around the table. He punched a few buttons on it which brought a hologram of a system with a red giant as a star, with a few scattered planets. The lights in the room dimmed to bring attention the hologram.
"This is Nova Serpentas. Its a red giant system with the star going Nova roughly 30 million years ago. There are no habitable worlds in the system, and the only thing close to being civilization is an automated recharging station located at the Nadir (bottom) point. This station is a stop-over for long-distance cargo haulers. Now, a new band of pirates, calling themselves the Eightfold Aces, has set-up shop in this system and has been preying upon a few merchant ships. Now, this isn't related to the rumors of ships turning up weeks later with no crew and untouched, so don't think we're going ghost hunting or anything like that. This is simply part of the new Resurgance Campaign. Since we're considered Green by the Admiral, we're being assigned bust them. Our current projected Opposing Force (OpFor from now on) are eight H45-S1 Interceptors, and a Delta-IV Cargo Carrier. We don't know where they got the interceptors, but they're almost twenty years old. Shouldn't be too hard to slaughter them. The Delta-IV is also up for grabs as for kills, and since only Jet and Spike can only really damage it, they're the ones who are going to have to deal with it. The rest of us will deal with the interceptors. Don't doubt the H45s. They are still damnably dangerous. Any questions?"
During his speech, the hologram zoomed in to an asteroid belt ringing one of the few Gas Giants left in the system, and displayed a hologram of eight H45-S1 Interceptors, which look like modern-day F-14 Tomcats. The Delta-IV is simply a massive box with engines on the back with loading doors on each side. The view then pulled out and displayed a route to the asteroid belt.

Raising his hand slightly, Danny spoke.
"Sir, they're sending a Green rated squadron out to be outnumbered nearly two to one?"

"Green rated because of you four, Pilot. Must likely 2nd Class Flight Officer Aurastes and I can take them down. Remember, Pilot, they're using twenty year old fighters. Medium Interceptors. The Flight Officer and I fly heavy interceptors. We're a bit faster then Corvettes, and just as well armed. Unfortunately, our weapons have nowhere near the damage distribution that a Corvette has. If you'd like, think of it as a training mission with live ammo excercises." Your CO answers Danny's question as she walked in. "Flight Officer, I recalibrated your Blade's neural network. You really have to stop overfeeding the buffer. It screws with the handling." she says to Reico.
Reico shrugs and grins. "Ah, but Ma'am, it makes me... more unpredictable."

Danny bit back a retort and nodded gently. "Of course, Sirs." His lessons in strategy at Command School told him something was up. They were being sent into unfriendly territory, unfriendly terrain, outnumbered, if not outgunned. A glance at the hologram reminded him about the carrier. He didn't trust THAT either. But maybe those were just stories?
He hit the power button on his PADD and slip it in a pocket of his flight suit. One command was all her was waiting for, but it hadn't come yet.

after putting away her cards and listening intently to the breifing she smirked at danny "come on, we can take 'em. just like he said, a training exercise with live targets." to her CO she asked "are we allowed to salvage the cargo carrier?"

"Why wouyld you want to salvage it, Pilot? Everything you will EVER need is onboard the Salamis. Hell, we've got our own Super Capital class construction facility onboard. Of course finding the crew for such a craft would be difficult, given that the Salamis needs every hand it can get. But my point still stands. It's a Delta-IV. You can find thousands of them on used ship lots in the galaxy." Reico asked incredulously.
Flight Officer ward shrugged. "Okay, Pilots. Here's the deal. We're being deployed on a Light Strike Craft Carrier. She can accomodate the six of us just fine. Now, if something hits the fan in a most unpleasant way, she can bail us out. Any OTHER questions?"

"Oh for the love of the Gods! Not you too! Whatever rumors that have been going around about ships turning up without their crews is utter bullshit. Next time I hear something about it, I'm sure the Life Support Chief and I can come to an understanding, and you can spend a few weeks cleaning some of the sewege lines. End of Story."
Reico was pissed, obviously, and even Kerlyn was taken aback and his exploding at the n00b pilot.
"Easy, Reico. No need to scare the living daylights out of the girl before she's even downed her first target."

"Well, I for one can't wait.", Jet finally pipes in. "We'll take that old Delta IV out, and you'll be lucky if we leave anything behind, Sir!", she adds, punching Spike in the arm. Spike just sits quietly, looking as though he may be sick.

"Yes, sirs, I've been on the deckplates too long for my tastes, and want in the air again. Even outnumbered, I'll trust the brass." He chuckled, wishing he didn't have that piece of brass on his own shoulder for once. A glance at Dani with accompanied grin solidified his resolve again.

"well i'm ready." dani said soberly. the shouting rhixi hadn't fazed her a bit being used to officers yelling at her. most of the time the threats meant nothing.
