His head still lowered, Indawo continued to stare at his feet until he realized Meeki had stopped talking; looking up, he realized that she too was staring at his feet, and he instantly felt foolish. Turning a deep scarlet that showed even through his fur, he hurried to distract attention from his ridiculous sock ponderance; however, the result probably seemed more like blathering.
"Two-leggers are alright in their own way, but it sounds like yours was more considerate than mine. I found out after emerging from my basket permanently that my parents couldn't handle raising all three of their baskets, so they kept my sister while my brother and I were 'gifted' to two-leggers to be raised." He supposed that his two-legger had tried, but she'd always seemed to like Safi just a bit better than him...no, not even just a bit, a lot. And that, on top of everything else, stung.
"Differences...they have their perks, but some differences I could do without. Like those 'cruel natures' we talked about earlier." He managed a smile there; this conversation had managed to meander through light-heartedness like he'd hoped, but this seriosu side hit far too personally for him to truly enjoy it. Meeki probably didn't realize how raw a nerve she was touching, but he would be happy to get back to...actually, just about anything else. "And what were you saying there? You sort of trailed off."

Meeki's jaws literally dropped as she listened to what Indawo said. How could.. how could any parent keep two baskets only to give away the third? The idea of it is just so.. wrong. She was starting to realize that Indawo's pain cut deeper than a spear. He simply had been through more than any soquili should.
She realized that she needed to get his mind off the negative things. This stallion needed to find reasons to be happy, to love life, himself, things that he enjoyed and to strip himself away from all the things that bring him down. She wasn't the best with words and sure had no experience at being a friend, but she decided that she was going to try.
"Oh, I was going to say that you're really a nice and intelligent stallion. I could probably learn a lot from you. Like those cruel natured soquilis. But for now, I feel like running. How fast are you, Indawo? Think you can take me on, huh huh? I'm as wild as a wolf and as fast as a falcon. See me? This is me kicking your butt!" And with that, the mare took off as fast as she could, running throughout the clearing. She could only hope he would be tempted to follow and loosen up enough to have a little fun.

Once again, Indawo was briefly left hanging as Meeki took another abrupt turn of conversation. Consequently, when Meeki took off like a bat out of hell he wasted a few valuable racing minutes by standing stock still and blinking. But once he realized what she was doing, he had to smile slightly; whether or not she meant it, she'd done just what he'd hoped: the subject was changed. His smile hovered for a moment, then widened into what could only be described as a devilish grin. "See this, Meeki? This is me dodging your kick and booting you back!"
Kicking up a few tussocks of sod with the force of his start, the stallion took off after Meeki, his legs pumping as he raced after Meeki. Sure, it was utterly ridiculous, frivolous, and out of character for him...but if there was ever a moment that he could break with his usual behavior, this was it.

Meeki giggled. She felt like a foal again, simply enjoying running and jumping for no reason at all. Had it really been so long since she last played like this? She hadn't been an adult long but it felt like ages ago all the same.
It didn't take Indawo long to catch up to her. She knew he could pass her up with ease as she wasn't a very swift Soquili and of course, the socks only hindered her more.
"Lightning Indawo rears to the left but The Hummingbird Meeki swings in front to maintain the lead. Oh the race is on, folks! Which one will make it to the lake first?" she playfully announced between breaths. Her heart felt like it would burst out of her chest from the exercise she was getting but a complaint was the last thing on her mind.

As Indawo gained on Meeki, he found himself chuckling along with her absurd announcement, but at their behavior as well. Just think how crazy they must look to any random passers-by, a grown mare and stallion racing along for all the world like foals! But really...what did it matter to anyone else, anyway? One thing was certain, he was certainly feeling better.
"Though the Hummingbird was fastest off the mark, Lightning is gaining! He's coming up on the inside...OH MY GOD, LIGHTNING HAS PASSED THE HUMMINGBIRD! IT'S LIGHTNING!" As he added his own bent to the commentary, the stallion raced passed Meeki, his mane, tail, and wings streaming behind him. For the brief time he was alongside Meeki, he flashed her a grin and stuck out his tongue, then raced along past. "You're so going down, Hummingbird!"

Meeki laughed loudly and boldy. It was rare that she ever just let loose on a laugh but this moment certainly called for such an occasion. She met his tongue with one of her own and tried to muster up some more speed. Her legs were starting to hurt but she didn't mind.
"Hummingbird? Did I call myself that? Oh, I clearly meant SHOOTING STAR!" But she was simply not a match for the larger stallion. He had her beat with his longer limbs as well as better shaped body. Eventually she ended up slowing down until she simply had to stop to catch her breath. What a fun run that was! She really needed to do that more if she wants to stand a chance in any real race.
"I guess Hummingbird and Shooting Star are no match for the Lightning," she admitted sheepishly.

As Meeki stopped, Indawo slowed as well until he basically trotted up to the shore of the lake, breathing a bit heavily but grinning ear to ear. "I'd say that the Hummingbird is suffering from mild schizophrenia, but otherwise is totally sound...at least, other than the delusion that she can beat Lightning."
Smiling, he struck a proud stallion pose and strutted down the shoreline a little bit before pulling up short. Ok, this was just plain foolish; obviously the subject was dropped without him acting like...who knew what. "Good race, Meeki! I bet if you'd jumped out a little earlier, you might have managed a win anyway. Or at least a tie." He managed to keep a perfectly straight face, but his eyes were dancing with amusement. Oddly enough...this was very fun.

Meeki snorted playfully at Indawo at his schizophrenia comment. She smiled when the cockiness came to him, even though it was short-lived. For a moment there, the stallion felt really good about himself, and it showed.
"Pish Posh. I was no match and we both know it. It sure was fun though!" It took longer to reply because she had to pause in between to catch her breath. She walked over to the lake and lowered her head and drank greedily. The water was so refreshing. After a moment, she raised her head and spat a mouthful of water out at Indawo.

Deciding that a drink of water would be refreshing as well, Indawo had started to lower his head and was consequently not paying attention at all when Meeki decided to do a fountain impression; he didn't even realize what she'd done until he ha dwater in his ear. "Bleh!" He started, shaking his head wildly to try to get rid of the annoyin water-in-the-ear sensation, then gave Meeki an accuastory look. "You soooo did not just spit water at me, did you Meeki?"

Meeki grinned and took a step back. "Why would I ever do a thing like that," she laughed at the stallion. She had to try hard to keep her laughter at bay. This was just turning out to be a fun afternoon.
Meeki winked at Indawo before lowering her head to grab another mouthful of water. She tried her best to make a threatening face but it didn't come out quite as well with her cheeks puffed out from the water.

"Minx." Lowering his head in what he hoped was a threatening manner, Indawo gave Meeki the fullest extent of his 'look of ferocity'. "I'd have hoped that by now you would have learned some manners, yet here you are spouting water like a bloody fountain!" Shaking his head, he narrowed his eyes at her as she puffed up on water; the eye narrowing acheiving two purposes: It made him look angry, and it helped him counter the nagging feeling that he was going to start laughing.
Stepping away from Meeki, he flattened his ears for extra emphasis. "I don't believe in using violence against mares normally...but if you spit at me again, I'll..." He'll what? Huh, that wasn't really something he'd thought much about. For some reason, the usual methods of retaliation and defense one used against large ornery stallions didn't seem totally appropriate to use on mares, particularly small ones. For a moment, Indawo thought over the best way to threaten, but ultimately decided that the best thing was probably to just let the threat hang open. Imagination was often better at accomplishing ends than specifics, after all!

Meeki grew unsure. She wanted to tease and play with Indawo more but if she went over the line, she'd lose all the progress she had made with him. She didn't want to do that. Would he really use violence on her? He didn't seem like that kind of stallion but everyone had a hidden temper, including herself, and it was hard to know what such a thing could bring out except from experience.
Meeki lowered her head and spat the water out on the ground. "I'm sorry, Indawo. I was being a little too childish that time." She was an adult and maybe it was about time to start acting like one. She walked over and nuzzled the side of his head, near his ear where the water had hit, hoping to help dry it off quicker.

All things considered, it was quite astonishing how rapidly things could shift from pleasant to awkward. Indawo wanted to kick himself as Meeki's behavior suddenly changed from goofy to penitent; he could tell all too well that his own behavior had caused the change in hers, and it gave him the feeling that he'd kicked a puppy. Damn it, he was just not good at non-violent interaction; so inept at it that his attempt at teasing had come off as a sincere threat! Lovely.
Shaking his head, he attempted to backtrack and explain, hoping to break through the Wall of Awkwardness that seemed to have suddenly formed between the two of them. "No, Meeki, it's not like that...I mean, I wasn't serious, it was just..." And damn it all if he didn't have a clue how to phrase what he meant properly. Obviously he was just not good at this!
Perhaps it was because of his anxiety that Meeki's action caught him so off guard. Normally, physical contact was something that he eschewed entirely; short of fighting, he couldn't recall the last time that any other being had touched him. He tended to keep his distance from others and usually moved off if it looked like someone was going to touch him...
But then, usually he wasn't blathering at the time, either. As it was, the realization that he was being touched...being nuzzled caused almost every muscle in his body to tense...but only for a moment. Astonishly enough...it wasn't unpleasant.

"You're almost dry now," Meeki further apologized before stepping away. She really shouldn't have spat the water at his head. She should put more thought into her actions but she was always a whim kind of mare. Seemed to come with her race, not that she's ever met another female flutter. It was just easier to blame her quirks on her race. It was the only thing that she saw that made her different than the other soquilis.
She was happy to know he wasn't serious. She felt a bit foolish for thinking he might have been and the awkwardness that came between them because of her actions only made her feel worse. Still, she tried to hide it by offering him a smile. "We are still getting to know each other. Misunderstandings will happen. I'm willing to get to know you better though.. that is.. if you let me."

Indawo tossed his head experimentally, smiling slightly as the ease with which the hair moved confirmed it's now dry state. He was never one to be against water, but it always felt weird to be partially wet. "Water dries...at least it wasn't mud or something like that." And it would have been easy to get muddy; one only had to look at the bottom beneath the water to have a healthy supply of the stuff.
Glancing back from the water to Meeki, he managed to return her smile with one of his own which, if not quite as large as hers, was at least sincere. Or so he hoped. At any rate, he still felt bad about upsetting Meeki, so he was least trying to make up for that. "I guess that things are bound to happen in circumstances like this...that must be why some Soquil are such big advocates of herds and social groupings, since that way you learn what does and doesn't bother or confuse others. Not that I've ever been in one, myself."
He turned his attention back to the ground and his hooves as he finished speaking, unsure of how to go on. What did you say when someone asked you something like that? He didn't even know what that meant, how was he supposed to deny or permit her to get to know him better? And what did getting to know one better even mean, euphemisms aside? Damnit all, this was starting to get even more confusing! Did he say yes? Maybe? Whatever you want? Hell if I know?
After considering the issue for what felt like an eternity, the stallion finally raised his head and simply shrugged his shoulders. "Well, I'm not going to stop you if you want to, I guess..."
