Madeline Arrives!

Lady DiYanni

Date: 2005/04/25
When I had arrived--a little late as usual--the square was already crowded with eager customers. People were stepping on each, wagering bets, chatting amongst themselves. There was so much confusion that I felt the children would have become restless or upset had they been with me. However, as the announcer presented that young little leaflet--such a small thing!--their anticipation only grew more intense. The auction commenced and round after round of bids came.

As I considered my competitors, my heart began to sink. Was my hope for nothing? But as my eyes returned to that green leaf--center of so much conflict--I felt that I could not waiver. I spoke loudly, assertively as I bid my price.

Afterwards, my heart was not granted a chance to settle--it was immediately overcome with even greater eagerness, for I was announced as the one who would be awarded that precious little leaf. As it came into my quivering hands, I felt such relief, such joy...

Madeline!

Regards,
DiYanni

Mama came home real excited today. She gave me this book and told me I needed to write something nice in it so Madeline could remember later. She told me Madeline was the leaf, but I don't believe her. I don't know what I should say about Madeline. Mama let me smell her. She smells nice, but not really like anything. Mama also let me touch her. It feels just like any of the leaves outside I find. I don't know why this one is so special.

Love,
Ilyusha

I was working on my calligraphy when Ms. DiYanni came into the house today, very noisy and excited. After she seemed to slow down a bit, she showed me a leaf she had just gotten. She said it was called "Eden" and it would become a person, like me. Then she gave me this book and told me I needed to write memories for Madeline.

I didn't want to tell Ms. DiYanni this because she was so happy, but I think she just got cheated by a really mean, dirty merchant. I've never heard of "Eden" before, and this leaf doesn't really look like the fae seedlings from the Falsin Forest.

I hope she finds out about it fast, or she might be really disappointed later when nothing happens.

Sincerely,
Momo DeVitre.

Mama said Madeline is a kid, but I don't know why. Madline can't play with me, she can't run, she can't eat anything. I think it's just a leaf, but Mama keeps saying that Madeline's more than just a leaf. I think Mama should've gotten a dog or cat for us instead, because that would be more fun. Sorry, Madeline, if you read this later. (But I don't think you will, because leaves can't read.)

Love,
Ilyusha

When I went to the kitchen this morning for breakfast, I saw Ms. DiYanni talking to that leaf! Has she lost her marbles? Things are become so strange around here. I hope she gets over this "Eden" fixation soon or she may lose her reputation as a scholar.

Sincerely,
Momo DeVitre.

DiYanni

Date: 2005/04/27
After I had received the proper instructions, I decided that it was time for me to visit the Eden Project establishment that was responsible for giving me my Madeline. Soon after I arrived at the little shop, two of the employees departed (including Ms. Kat, who I was able to speak to for a few moments)...It was disappointing not to be able to speak to them more about the Edens.

However, my anxious desire for answers was quelled by other Eden parents who had also gathered at the headquarters. I became acquainted with Ms. Feather, Ms. Bird, and Ms. Ul. Unlike Madeline, their own Edens had developed into something quite spectacular! Well, just like any human child, except for some rather extraordinary features I would expect to find only from other animal specimens. For example, Ms. Bird's little one, named Raven, had feathers much akin to the blue jays that sometimes visit our garden. How curious!

I have so much more to learn about this Eden species. I anticipate speaking to Ms. Kat again.

Regards,
DiYanni

When Ms. DiYanni arrived home tonight, she was extremely excited. She had written all of her observations in her little notebook, including illustrations of the children she had apparently seen when visiting the Eden Project. Given this new information, I'm a little less skeptical. I would like to visit the shop myself one day...

Ilyusha seems to have become tired of writing in this journal. Maybe he'll be more excited to write if and when Madeline emerges as a child.

Sincerely,
Momo DeVitre.

Lena looked on the route described on her paper and rose her head slightly to compare the building's house number in front of her. "So this has to be Mrs. DiYanni's home then." She said to the flowerpot in her hands and placed it gently in front of the entrance. Slowly she fiddled an envelope out of her jacket and placed it on the orange pot.

A letter from Lena

Dear DiYanni,
I thought about Madeline a lot since you visited our Project. We estimated it's time for you to plant your little precious. That's why I provide you with this special flowerpot, which is filled with very fertile earth. I hope you enjoy your planting time and we'll be able to see Madeline in her toddler form soon.

Madeline's New Home...?

User Image

As DiYanni rose from her bed, hair disheveled and sleep still heavy in her eyes, she stretched her arms wide as if to greet the morning from her window. Sunshine streaked through the full arms of the outside oak tree, illuminating the dusty interior of her bedroom. Clumsily, she meandered into the kitchen and began to boil water for breakfast.

Ilyusha and Momo were not yet awake. Had the morning newspaper arrived...?

Opening the front door of their little house, DiYanni paused in confusion at what she beheld: an orange flowerpot, already brimming with soil taken fresh from the land. She took a step outside, glancing about briefly to see if she could find the culprit responsible for such a bizarre prank. When she was unable to identiy any suspicious figures in the area, she returned her attention to the flower pot once more, this time noticing the note that was included.

With slightly tremoring hands, she took the letter from its envelope and began to skim its contents.

"A pot...for Madeline?" DiYanni murmurred to herself, allowing her gaze to drop once more to the ceramic container at her feet.

She lifted the flowerpot without further hesitation, returning to her private study. Already the morning sunlight was streaming through curtained windows, casting fantastic shadows in the crowded room. DiYanni picked up a journal sitting amongst loose papers of scribbled observations and miscellaneous data reports, flipping open to the page that she had bookmarked with Madeline's leaf.

Taking the leaf from its place in the book, she tucked its crisp, green form snugly into the moistened soil. Was this how it was to be done? So simply? Perhaps some water and fertilizer when she had the opportunity...

Oh! But the water was boiling over in the kitchen--!!

I got up for breakfast this morning and Mama showed me that she had put Madeline in an orange bowel. Madeline still doesn't look much different to me, but Mama says this is really exciting. Momo seems convinced now that Madeline is going to do something great too. I'll believe it when I see it!

Mama also asked me to write nice things to Madeline, not just these mean things. But I'm not being mean! I'm being honest, just like I was taught.

Love,
Ilyusha

I couldn't sleep this morning because Ms. DiYanni was making such a racket! Sometimes that woman acts like she's still a child. When Ilyusha and I went to see what was the matter, she showed us that Madeline was now planted in an orange pot supposedly given to her by the Eden Project. I'm not sure what's going to happen next, but I'll be waiting to see. Maybe I should write some notes for Madeline like I do with some of the plant experiments I do with Ms. DiYanni.

Here's my scientific notes on Madeline:
- HEIGHT: approx. 3 in. or 7.5 cm.
- WIDTH: approx. 2 in. or 5 cm.
- WEIGHT: light
- APPEARANCE: light green, smooth, veination, dicot
- SMELL: n/a
- LOCATION FOUND: origin from Eden Project, Ms. DiYanni found at auction
- PLANTED: April 30, 2005

Sincerely,
Momo DeVitre.

DiYanni

Can you imagine seeing another one of those curious Eden children? When I went to visit the headquarters again today, I met Ms. Jadaria and her young boy, Kajika. He's really quite something! Supposedly, he has the spirit of a poison dart frog. Ms. Jadaria and I discussed the possibility that he may actually be able to produce poison at some time in the future (a very frightening possibility). Also, I allowed him to see and touch Madeline. Perhaps they can be friends when they are older, even if little Kajika does become poisonous.

I forgot to note that when I spoke to Ms. Lena the other day, she informed me that Madeline was found caught in a spider's web. How dreadful! I hope that the little leaf wasn't too troubled from that incident. Imagine, being caught in the trap of such a predator! I shudder to think of it.

Regards,
DiYanni

Throughout the last days you have discovered an increasing presence of spiders around the flowerpot. If there was just one web at first now almost ten cover the pot and the little leaf inside. But today you make an even scarier experience : As a fly hits one of the webs Madeline starts to wiggle excitedly !

I Saw It--!!

"Ah, almost there..." DiYanni muttered, standing on her tip-toes to reach the dusty teapot that she had stored on the top shelf of the cupboard. However, her clumsy fingers brushed the porcelain antique in the wrong direction and it tumbled to the counter with a loud crash.

"Oh, goodness!" she cried, immediately seeing if Madeline's flowerpot, which had shared space on the counter, was damaged from the incident.

DiYanni caught her breath, staring at the massive entanglement of webs that seemed to grow from the pot. It was only yesterday that she had brushed them aside! How was it that they were returning so quickly? Surely her house was a little unkept, but it was ridiculous for spiderwebs to multiply so rapidly--and especially around her dear Madeline!

"Well, we'll have to do something about that!" she declared, reaching for a moist towel.

However, as DiYanni returned her attention to Madeline's flowerpot, she caught sight of a small insect running itself into the web. Then, an unwelcome chill rippled along her throat as she watched the little leaf react to the trapped fly.

"Madeline...dear?" she whispered quietly.

More and more spiders dig themselves out of the earth and gather around the strongly wiggling leaf. You notice that dust seems to settle all around the room and the air grows quite thick and unhealthy. The athmosphere can be compared with the one of an old creepy tomb...

What Is This Premonition?

As the strange, natural ritual took place before her eyes, DiYanni clutched her hands to her chest, shuddering uncontrollably.

What was this feeling? And how did the atmosphere of the room become so...dark?

"Madeline...Madeline!" she cried, attempting to approach the leaf. Were these spiders--these frightening little beings--the cause for what was occurring? Were they doing something to Madeline?

Coughing, choking on the thick dust that was now heavy in the air and on the furniture, DiYanni continued to approach the counter, attempting to peer through the haze and find that familiar little flowerpot.

What was happening to her?

Instead of stopping the whole process it becomes even more disturbing. And out of sudden the little creatures start to form their webs around the wiggling leaf. Within seconds the whole pot is covered with white stuff and the moisture in the air even increases.
It becomes even so dense that you can't see the white wiggling ball anymore.

For a few seconds you're drowned in uncertainty, but then the feelings slowly evades and instead of the leaf and the spiders a young girl sits on the counter.

Black Widow Spider

Clutching her hands and staring frantically in the settling dust, DiYanni whispered Madeline's name once more. Her throat was parched and tingled slightly as she took steps towards the kitchen counter. However, as she drew closer, she realized that a larger shape now manifested where the flowerpot had once been.

"Madeline...?" she whispered uncertainly.

As the last of the cloud of dust disappeared, DiYanni found herself facing a strangely pale child whose face was upturned. The sickly-thin, jointed legs of an insect sprung from her back.

"Ah, little darling, is that you? Is that you?" she asked, although her voice was still hoarse and trembling.

How innocent that little leaf had appeared! Yet it was not that Madeline was hideous nor wicked... There was simply...something frightening in her silent demeanor. DiYanni shuddered.

"Well, dear...We should get cleaned up soon, eh?"

Madeline, I'm sorry I didn't believe Mama. I see now that you really did turn into kid. But you're not the way I thought at all. What are you supposed to be? I don't know why, but when I first saw you, I got a really bad feeling. Momo said it might be an "omen." But you're still so small. I don't think you'll hurt us. Mama also told me that you're my Sis now, so I have to treat you nice. Welcome to the family, Madeline!

Love,
Ilyusha

What have we gotten ourselves into? When I returned home today, Ms. DiYanni showed me that Madeline had become a little girl. So the hypothesis was proven correct! However, it's more complicated than that. Madeline doesn't seem like a normal little girl. She didn't want to eat anything, and she didn't seem interested in some of Ilyusha's old toys that I showed her. I wonder what's going to happen now...

Sincerely,
Momo DeVitre.

Midnight. A perfect time for any lurker, or well, anything that suits in the darkness. Yume's earlier Dark Ninja career had trained her in the art of not being seen; thus, her body was only a shadow that moved quickly with the wind from bush to bush to DiYanni's house. There, she leaved a package, neatly wrapped in black paper with a spider web pattern. On top of the package, there was also an envelope, in the same color and with the same pattern, glued to the package so it wouldn't fly away.
Inside the package was a cute Spider KiKi Kitty plushie, half the size of Madeline; and inside the envelope was a folded paper note, with the following contents:
Dear Ms DiYanni and Madeline!
I wanted to congratulate Madeline growing up and have therefore bought this plushie for her to enjoy. I was strolling the Mini Shops when I found a shop selling the popular Donation Item, KiKi Kitty, though it was not the KiKi Kitty itself, but a larger copy in form of a plushie. Those KiKi Kitty plushies are dressed up, and I found a KiKi Kitty dressed up in another popular Donation Item, the Chestplate of Arachne. And since Madeline's soul is a Black Widow, I thought it'd suit her with a cute spider kitty. I hope she has fun playing with her new toy.

I'm so apprehensive... Oh, dear. Madeline is my beautiful little girl. However, I can't help but feel chills whenever she is about. Although she's so young, I feel that there is something terribly eerie about her.

Have the other Eden parents experienced similar feelings with their little ones? Ah, and that's another matter! Whenever I take Madeline outside in her buggy, I'm absolutely nervous that someone will see her. I really do love her so, but what will others think about her? I am not certain I could bear their scrutinizing looks... However, the other parents of the Eden Project did not seem frightened at all. Is it because they are now accustomed to seeing such peculiarities in children?

Of the children Madeline met yesterday, I think she has become the most friendly with Ms. Bird's child, Raven. They were have a strange conversation in which Madeline kept saying the word, "Nay." What does it mean? Ms. Ul's child, Teagan, caused a racket with Madeline. I'm afraid that she might be extremely angry that the little boy bit one of her legs. We rushed from the shop before any more disturbances occurred.

Also, when I woke this morning, I found an adorable stuffed animal from a woman named Yume! Madeline will certainly be delighted to have a new toy for herself.

Regards,
DiYanni

Madeline, you're really weird. I want you to know this when you get older. You're just a really creepy kid. Sometimes I feel like you're watching me in the wrong kind of way, but I don't know if you're even old enough to know how to look at people that way. I wonder if you aren't thinking bad things about us all of the time.

Love,
Ilyusha
