China? Luna knew where that was! That was where all of Little Big Sister's books and her idol was from! And digging, too? That only served to sweeten the pot.

She'd have to politely decline the shovel, though. Luna preferred digging with her bare hands. There was simply no greater pleasure than feeling the earth through her fingers.

She gently reached forward to clasp Merlyn's paws over the shovel. He should use it. It's his shovel, and Luna works better with her hands.

So. To work!

"Uh huh." China! Daddy said that that was where he'd get to if he dug this deep a hole. All the way through the world and out the other side!

Was Luna sure she don't need a shovel? Fast to dig with, even if digging with hands was fun, but she was all the way human and didn't have claws to help dig with. He demonstrated proudly how much sand he could score out with his claws extended.

Luna tilted her head to the side, eyes sparkling with amusement as she followed Merlyn's train of thought as it switched from track to track and back. And she DID follow it.

Of couse she could dig with her hands! She learned from her brother and her niece, who both chose to align themselves with the element of Earth. And, she noted with some pride, when it came time for her to choose an element -- very soon, she emphasized -- she would choose Earth, as well.

Sand was different, of course. But as long as the sand underneath her was dry, she could scoop it out easily with the side of her hand. Once it got wet, her nails would work quite nicely. They weren't claws, but they'd do.

Element choosing? Merlyn paused in scooping a pawful of sand out of the hole. Didn't elements choose you? He was Dream, he told Luna proudly. Because he was born that way.

He took a look at her nails, and had to admit that they were indeed very like claws in the way that mattered right now. "Okay." He'd keep the shovel.

Another sparkle. It was a little of both, most likely. Did the sun choose the Earth, or did the Earth choose the sun? Or did they simply meet and choose each other?

...Dream...

Something about that was familiar. VERY familiar. There was a flash of a memory that Luna wasn't sure existed, of a girl and boy with crescent-moons on their faces. And Jo--

What was it like, being of a dream element? She wasn't even aware it WAS one.

The sand was starting to turn darkish, dirt making its way into the aggregate. Merlyn took this as a good sign. It must mean they were meaking progress. They'd be to China in no time.

"That" a story? The thing about the sun and the earth? It sounded like the stories Blue read to him.

Element was what it was to be like something, right? It was a wordless concept of alignment. Merlyn didn't know how it was to be anything else but dream. It was like cold blue fire that tickled your hands, and sweet dark shadow, and it made itself into pieces that had wings, and when he slept it sang to him and folded him in a feeling like wings. It was good. It was good that he could explain without words. He didn't have words for what it was.

Really? Luna closed her eyes as she tried to feel such a thing for herself. It was different, that was for sure. Something she would definitely like to explore more, someday.

What was feeling like earth like? Merlyn was fantastically curious. Luna has expressed that she would be earth. Merl held up a tiny pile of damp dirty sand on the palm of one hand, studying it carefully. It seemed like it would be kind of gritty and make you have to take a bath, and he couldn't think of what else.

"Good to swim," he told Luna seriously, but baths are ick. Because you had to take baths.

Earth is more than just dirt. Luna took a handful of dirt in her hands and slowly began to sift through it. Earth is the beginning. It protects seeds from the other elements and nourishes them while they grow. Earth houses countless little creatures, all working and living and existing. Earth is the rocks that protect and are shaped and polished. And gems. One couldn't forget the sparklies, of course.

Plants were life itself. But Earth? Earth was birth.

She supposed those who came up with the phrase "Mother Earth" truly weren't exaggerating!

"Ooooohhhhhhhh." That was huge, a big huge thing, a whole different kind of huge from the palmful of sand in his hand. Merlyn studied the little pile with a new interest. Should they be digging, then? Was it okay with the ground if they dug? "Hurt?" he inquired.

Luna shook her head quickly. Digging the dirt was good for it! It mixed the dirt and made it better for making plants grow!

They were like... like earthworms!
PostPosted: Fri Jul 14, 2006 8:12 pm

Merlyn imagined an earthworm in the frilly, pretty dress Luna had been wearing when he first met her, and giggles started bubbling up out of him. Big earthworms in clothing!

Luna giggled quietly, covering her mouth with one dirty hand. She doesn't get her dresses dirty; oh, no! Her tights, though... well. Those were fair game.
PostPosted: Fri Jul 14, 2006 8:23 pm

Clothes are for getting dirty! Merlyn nodded firmly and attempted to put his handful of sand on Luna's head, pushing himself to his feet and reaching over towards her. So one's fur didn't get all full of it, unless someone put it there. The last concept was accompanied by a mischievous, bubbling amusement.

"Kyaaa!"

Luna squeezed her eyes shut as the sand was deposited on her head, shaking her head violently to force as much sand as she could off. Of course, some still remained.

That wasn't fair! ...Well. Maybe it was a little funny. And it's nothing a little water wouldn't wash out...
