In my opinion you can. I think that in order to understand anime you need experience in the outside world. For me it helps to connect to some of the harder to understand characters (like Flay Allister, Kikyo, and Fuyumi from Saikano).

i used to be like that too i was addicted to just fantasy anime like record of lodoss, el hazard, and others till i rented or saw all the ones that were out. after that i figured i might as well watch others and see what i'm missing out on.
