Poisend Ish Oh yeah true, sweatdrop I forgot about that, I had that happen after all the males died, the guppies kept getting dead fry. But i thought that only happend if you left a female that had mated once without a male. You mean, they never mate again? The males will still herass them but, no they still have the same type of fry every time. Alot of guppy books stress seperating your male and female fry as soon as posible so that you will have virgin females and can pick who they mate with. My girlfriend had this problem, the had a halfblack pastel (VERRY pretty guppy) but before she had a chance to mate it the other males killed it x.x

The Petsmart near me is absolutely wonderful. The Petco is ok but I love the Petsmart. Most of the staff is knowlegable thanks to my very often ramblings at them for being stupid. If you complain a lot they get better. Trust me. Just aim for their wallet. I love the Petsmart near me. They have the best bettas. They have nearly every variety of crowntail betta there. I just got an amazing black orchid double raycrownie from there. His tail type is so orriginal. My only complaints with that one are that the community tanks are very disease ridden. I'm working on fixing that with them. My main complaints are the small fish chains around here. I can't even go in them without supervision. I start yelling if I don't get dragged out. They're horrible. I can't even talk about it now because I'll get really mad for hours. They're horrible. Surprising as it is, the big chains in south NJ are a lot better than the little guys. Zoo's pet store is the devil.

I've only ever seen one good petsmart, and actually I'd found one good WalMart. For the most part the big chains aren't a good choice in my experience. I know the salt water section at the store I work at is great, but our goldfish are just as bad as anyone else's.

You should see this one store (a major chain mind you) I was in out in Long Island, NY... there were Mollies in with Ciclids and they ignored me when I told them those fish shouldn't be together.

i couldn't tell you the best one since usually i go to very large privetly owned ones but the worst is PETSMART. they treat their fish horribly from my expirience... i caught them fighting bettas, feeding tetras to oscars and they don't care if there's a dead one in the tank... cry

If you're ever in Michigan, DEFINITELY check out Cichlid World in garden city or Fantastic Fins in Livonia. Cichlid world is run by, dare I say it, a hippy, but he's awesome. xd They specialize in cichlids *dur* and the tanks are always full of algae, as the owner has proven scientifically that algae in tanks = happy fish. BTW, the entrance tank is 2000 gallons, and you can buy fish from it. xd As for fantastic fins, they specialize in the L-plecos and exotics. The prices are always low, and most of the fish are tank bred. 3nodding

Theres a shop in downtown called "Garden Center West" It's mainly a nursery, but they have a decent sized aquarium section. Theyre tanks are wonderful! They are each seperate tanks, and each have their own heating and filtration. They even take care or the chemical needs like PH and stuff! There so good they have baby cichlids in there tanks and I have only seen one dead fish in all of there tanks. There not even that expensive. I'm saving to get a 55gal. tank with hood, lighting, and stand for around $300.

As far as which store is good whether it is a chain store or a small one it all depends on the managers a nd employess of that particular store. It is hard for every Walmart or petsmart or what ever to find someone who knows more about every fish than what is stated on the little cards they stick to the front of the tanks. I have found that the newer the store the better the employees at taking care of the fish.
for example we have an old regular walmart on one side of the town where there is often dead fish in every tank and you have to literally go on a hunt to find anyone to get you fish. (sometimes I take pity on these fish and have an urge to buy them to save them from the torture)
then on the other side we have a brand spanking new Super Walmart who is the only walmart I've seen so far to actually carry some fish books and there is this one guy I always see around the tanks always cleaning out a tank and making sure everything is good.

I go to Petland since thats the closest one and the only affordable one at that. I hate it there they tank such poor care of all their fish. Every tank there is over stocked. Animal cages with rabbits or gerbels are way too small, the only section that seems to have any care is the bird section because the guy that mans that section really loves the birds. I talked to him once and he admited he had no idea how to care for birds at first but he learned because all the the birds there are so good that he just had to learn to take care of them.
There's a girl who works the fish section she's really good at catching and handling but other than that she really doesnt care when one jumps out or anything...when the floors wet she just mumbles, "floor's wet" There's rarely a sign or anything.
All the equipment and products there are dusty and dirty. The manager though is knowledgable about dogs and cats and that's about all.

I also shop at a local PetsMart, but I never buy livestock there, only equipment. Unfortunately, my favorite fish store is rather pricey, so I can't afford to buy equipment there.

Unfortunately there really aren't very many places to buy fish here in Sydney. Well none that's remotely accessible to me or that i know of. There are the local pet stores in shopping centres but they don't have alot of choice and often the people working there are completely unhelpful. There's this one store though that's pretty cool. They sell a whole range of saltwater tropical fish including things like seahorses and I have yet to see any sick fish. Then again i haven't had much opportunity to go there because it's a little far especially now that they've changed the bus routes. They seem to actually love their fish though, whenever i went there they had baby fish from their permanent display fish they keep in the store in little nets etc... It's good to know they don't just abandon their fish. Also i keep freshwater tropical fish so it's not all that great for me as their freshwater range is just as limited as other places XP There are another place though which i don't know the name of which i found very impressive because their tanks were not overstocked at all! All their fish had PLENTY of room and their tanks were at least twice the size of normal display tanks in other pet stores. That obviously comes with a price though seeing as they didn't have all that many fish comparatively.
