Remi cautiously stepped into the box filled room.
"I'm so sorry to intrude," she gave the younger woman and the older man a sheepish smile. "I'd just been wandering around and heard voices, so...yea."
Apparently she wasn't the only one wandering into the building. Another woman ahd appeared with a bunch of luggage. Building 2. Wait, wasn't that the one by the gardens.
"What a huge coincidence! I'm in Building 2 as well," she said. "Top floor, so if you hear any strange crashes that's probably me trying to apprehend my toddler."
House warming party. Sounded like fun. Now there were four of them. These people all seemed very nice, and since they lived closeby she now knew she had contacts in her own building. Oops, she forgot probably the most important thing.
"Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Remi," she held out her hand to the younger woman first, since it seemed this was her apartment.

Natalie shook Remi's hand, then waved to Eve. "In case you didn't catch it, I'm Natalie. And I had better start making food for all of us, I think. Noodles sound good?" Natalie began picking her way back to the kitchen. Thankfully, Carver's manliness has cleared a better path, so it was an easier return trip. She began rooting through the box of food again, pulling out another packet of ramen. She didn't much like the flavoring packets, but the noodles were good with other sauce, and it was the best she could do until she got unpacked and bought some fresh food.
Ah, if only she had Mictlan there - fresh pastries!
As she began looking for a big enough pot for all of them, along with bowls or plates or silverwear or something, an odd thought struck her. "Toddler? Like... an actual toddler-toddler, or an Ames toddler?"

Eve looked crushed. The wrong building? Oh dear, this was awfully embarrassing. Laughing as her cheeks suddenly flooded red, she glanced sideways back into the hallway. Too late to beat a hasty retreat, tail between her legs? She wasn't much of a social buterfly. Eve enjoyed company as much as the next woman, but these people - well, they were all so young! And attractive. And there Eve was, in her late thirties and baggy overalls and thick glasses. Feeling old.
Weren't these people a bit too young for the responsibility of a child? A woman like her she could understand. She was alone, and her job allowed her to move freely around the country. But these were men and women ten years younger than her, if not more so! Then again, she didn't know a thing about rearing a child herself. Perhaps they were experts.
"A pleasure," she said mildly to those who had introduced themselves to her, and she managed a wavering smile. At least there seemed to be one person around her age. Taking a deep breath, she passed the threshold of the door and forced herself to sit on the couch.
"I'm Eve - very sorry to intrude. I thought this was Building Two. I suppose later on you can show me where it is?" Eve asked, gesturing vaguely and hopefully at Remi and Carver.

"I'd be happy to, if I may." Carver nodded his head politely at Eve. "I'd hate to see a lady carry those bags all that way. - And it's good to meet you, Miss Remi. I'm glad there's somebody else in that building beside me. Uh. You say you actually have a toddler?"
He moved a couple more boxes with the power of his testosterone, and stood near the countertop of the kitchen. Like Eve, he was feeling a little bit overwhelmed, but it started to ebb away with the force of the flow and chatter. "Well, I can imagine what we're all going to be discussing soon. Child welfare. And. Um. ... Does anybody know how to childproof a damn toilet, pardon my French? The book didn't say."

Remi understood poor Eve's pain. She remembered her visit to the compound where she somehow found herself in the library, lost. She had been lucky Ismet was there, or else she would have been lost amongst all the books forever.
"I'm sure we could get you there," she answered Eve. "It's nice to know I now have neighbors. I had to move in all by myself."
Then the questions on Gavin. Due to the lack of frantic chaos, she guessed none of them had received their Souls yet. They were in for a wild time, as she knew all too well.
"His name's Gavin," Remi answered the toddler question with a smile. "And yes, he is an Ames toddler. More like a little hellion, but a toddler nonetheless."
She had to keep herself from laughing at the older man's comments.
"Luckily Gavin has a fear of bathrooms in general, so I haven't had to worry about childproofing toilets. Sorry."

"Lock the door and put the training potty somewhere else? I dunno." She shrugged.
"So... ah... what are Ames like? I haven't gotten a chance to see... er... mine. Ah. Oh, this is so awkward!" She quickly set about busying herself with filling her unwieldly pot with just enough water, then setting it on the stove. She turned it on, then dove back into the search - this time for a strainer, or whatever you called those things.
"Ignore me, I'm just the cook!" Natalie called out, voice muffled from all the junk she was sifting through.

Eve eyes crinkled with something that could be defined as a genuine smile in Carver's direction. The offer to carry her bags was more than appreciated, as she was something of a teeny-tiny thing and her bags were rather heavy. "Thank you," Eve breathed, sounding honestly relieved. She'd been accepted, and as such settled much more comfortably on the couch.
Eve, having arrived later than the rest of the guardians, had yet to receive her Ames as well. "I'm rather curious about them too," she said, nodding her head eagerly. "Anything you could tell, really - I'd like to hear it."

"I very much agree with that," the older man said, and suddenly all eyes were on Remi. "Please, won't you tell us what to expect? The only impression I've got from my books is that no matter what happens, I'm going to turn out to be a bad father and my child is inevitably going to be a drug-addicted hunchback. It doesn't sound very nice." (Already Carver was planning on having his future child meet Remi's, so that hopefully the bathroom phobia could rub off on him or her.)

"Er..." Remi started, now that all eyes were on her. Well, not all eyes, as one pair was in the kitchen behind a bunch of boxes. Still, she never did like being the center of attention. She ran a hand through her boyishly short hair nervously, trying to figure out where to start.
"Well, from what I know they all start out as little tiny balls of energy. I just happened to be in a meeting with Dacian in the lab when Gavin appeared. I guess in order for them to be born into this world they needed to blend with something."
Yes, Remi...this was making a lot of sense, except not.
"Gavin's was a hawk, so he looks half-bird. He's even got two little wings."
She smiled at this, knowing this would probably bring out some reactions from everyone. It wasn't everyday that you saw a kid with wings.

"Blended? Sounds weird. But cool. But weird. So... uh... balls of energy? Do we get to see them like that?"
Collander, that was the word! Right? Well, whatever it was, she'd found it, and was now dumping freeze dried noodles into the boiling water. Three minutes, right? If only she had a timer...
"Anybody have a watch? I need to know when three minutes are done."

"Oh, I do," Eve chirped, pushing her sleeve back to glance at her Mickey Mouse watch. "Three minutes starting... now. I'll tell you when, jiffy wiff." Smiling, she turned back to Remi, palms pressed together flat and fingers against her lips. Imagining a child with wings was... difficult. Like an angel? Were they getting tiny little angels? Oh, the thought made her a little sick with joy.
Eve had always wanted children. Very badly. The thought of finally getting one - one that might be like an angel, no less! - was mind bogglingly wonderful. Something darling and small, who smiled at her even before he - she could only imagine the child being a boy, for some odd reason - even managed to speak. And she'd teach him to walk, and to cook, and -
And she was getting distracted. A quick glance to her watch showed that the three minutes weren't up, and her expression hardened into something a little less dreamy. "He sounds precious," Eve cooed. She was eager to meet this toddler!

"Wings?"
Carver, on the other hand, looked mildly horrified, that being the overriding emotion after interested curiosity about a hawk-child. "Wings? Can he fly? Good lord, a winged toddler. That's all anybody would ever need. I'm sure he's a wonderful boy, but I'd have to tape all the windows shut and have him tied to a pole. How on earth do you manage?" (It was fairly obvious he was already trying to mentally childproof his apartment further, just in case he, too, got a winged toddler.)

"If you can find any of the mages, I'm sure they'd let you see the balls of energy," Remi replied to Natalie's comment. "If you're lucky you might just see it transform into a child, like I did."
It wasn't like it was anything fantastic. The energy ball just floated to the ground and turned into Gavin. Eve seemed overjoyed when she had mentioned wings.
"Oh, I don't know about precious. Adorable, yes. But once you get past the cuteness, you see all the chaos that can ensue. Gavin threw a bowl of spaghettios on one of the mages wall soon after he was born."
She laughed at the memory, and vaguely wondered if Dacian ever got the stain out of his wall. Then Carver seemed to go ballistic over the wings comment.
"Actually, his wings are too small for him to fly right now. I don't know about in the future. Right now he just thinks they're pretty things that stick out of his back."

"Well, I guess that's good. I mean. It must be nice having pretty things that stick out of your back... and not know how to use them. Well. For you, it should be nice. Er." What was it about this group that made her act so scatterbrained? It must be the unexpected chaos. That was it! "What I mean is... at least he's content, and doesn't realize he could be even more trouble to you."
When Eve mentioned three minutes had gone by, and she was sure she'd been stirring all the while, she carefully moved over to the sink and dumped the noodles into the collander-strainer-thing.

Eve fell silent as she considered Remi's suggestion. After finding her apartment, perhaps she could look around for one of these mages? How strange - her life had been completely devoid of anything magical, and yet here she was immersed in a world of winged toddlers and mages. Resting the tips of her fingers against her forehead, Eve sighed as she struggled to reconcile herself with this fact. Of course as a child she had always believed in magic and fairies and all that, but this?
Well, it was overwhelming. In a wonderful sort of way.
After a few seconds she smiled sweetly in Carver's direction. "Should you get a child with wings I'm sure you can handle her. Or him. Either way, they wouldn't have asked you if they didn't feel you were competent." Or at least she hoped so. The people in the room all seemed nice enough, but she was beginning to wonder how the mages chose their guardians exactly. If Remi was here, who was watching her toddler? Why was half the room so young? Carver seemed to be around her age - was he childless as she was? It all smacked of something incredibly strange.
Eve suddenly sat up abruptly. "Oh dear, I've been terribly rude. Natalie - it was Natalie, right? - do you need any help in the kitchen?" she asked, standing up.
