|Love me|
I heart RENT. I just hate that when I came out as bisexual to my dad, he implied that it meant I would be a whore; and I know part of that draws from RENT, and also from personal experience.
Seeing RENT in the theater... That's the only time I remember crying in a movie, really crying.
*End of movie* Me: *blubber* ANGEL! *sob*
My (conservative) dad was the only one who could see it with me, so it was uncomfortable. Right when I wanted to rejoice during La Vie Boheme...I had to act embarrassed because Father Dear is right there.

Not having seen the stage production previously, I really don't know how much room I have to talk....but I loved the movie! It's one of my favorites of all time (though I can't watch it with my dad...)
Collins was rockin', JoAnn was sassy, ANGEL WAS THE COOLEST THING EVER, and I think that even if Maureen hadn't been bi she would have been the "slutty" one. If you notice her personality, she's a bit of a sociopath....but I still love her character! "Moo with me!"
I don't look down on anyone for turning RENT into a movie! The plain and simple fact is that some people will never get the chance to see it on Broadway *coughs*LIKE ME*coughs* and this gives us poor unfortunates the chance to see into that world. It may not be the same as seeing it live, and they may have cut/changed a few things--but the emotion is still there, I cry every time I watch it! heart

|It's time to try|
You're right. Maureen has no remorse, she's just a playful slut. Ah well, I still love her.

Well I'm a complete RENT head, I don't own it (cause my parents are derks *twitches*) but I have still managed to see it (and dance to it) over 20 times. And as such a renthead I know all sorts of stuff about it and own books about it.
In regards to the stereotypes: Ya, they were stereotyped. But a good point was made in saying that they are Bohemians. Secondly, every character is based off of someone Jonathan Larson knew personally. In Anthony Rapp's (the original Mark) book he talks about being around Jonathan and his house and friends and how similar it all was to the musical. And, if memory serves, Maureen was based off of an ex of his...
In regards to stage vs movie: There isn't a single thing on the planet that goes well from stage to movie. But Anthony Rapp (the only one to have stayed from the very first workshop through to the movie [and in betweens]) said that the entire cast (old and new) thought that Chris Columbus did a brilliant job on the switch. So let's give it a bit of credit, if the man who knew this musical before it was finished says he did a good job, I'm sure he must've done some things right.
P.S. Sorry for the rant, I'm having a really pissy two days...break downs and fights included.
P.P.S. YOU MUST BUY OR RENT IT!!!

Rent RENT. Heh, that's awesome...either that or I'm just really tired.
Yeah the scary thing about myself and Maureen is that we're more alike than I would like to acknowledge. I don't sleep with everyone on the planet, but I am not monogamous (yeah I can spell...) in thought at ALL.
My favorite line from RENT is: Ever since puberty, everybody stares at me. Boys, girls; I can't help it baby! Haha yesss.
Yeah, La Vie Boheme is amazing. Everything in it that my mom or friends shudder at is what I'm thinking "hell yeah" about. "Sodomy, it's between god n' me" is my favorite line from that xp

ash_nazg_durbatuluk01 I liked the stage production better...when people turn musicals into movies it loses something....in this case a couple songs, scenes, and character development (poor mark, demoted to narrator.) If you read Without You you'd know that was kinda his role all along.

SarahArden They've got a transvestite, a gay & lesbian, a bisexual, and some straight people. I understand why Maureen (bisexual) was made out as the sluttiest one. It is a common misconception that bisexuality = promiscuity. Still it bothered me that they were drawing upon that stereotype...
How did you feel about how LGBTQ people were represented in the movie Rent? Angel isn't a transvestite, she's a drag queen. See, transvestites fancy women emo

LeSange Angel isn't a transvestite, she's a drag queen. See, transvestites fancy women emo I had to explain the difference between a drag queen and a transvestite to someone who said that not all drag queens are gay. I always thought the term "queen" kind of implied that they were gay. As for the movie it promoted diversity like crazy, they were all interracial couples as well. Angel was easily my favourite character. I didn't get a chance to see it on broadway when I was there (I'm more of a Phantom whore so I shelled out for that instead). As for Maureen's promiscuity, I didn't correlate it with her being bisexual at all. I just assumed she was a slut whee
