It seems to like me as if they never had enought time to make a 3D game. I love sprites, and they did awesome jobs on I and II. But I believe that the 3D version could give another game play and battle system. I like that using some magic will only affect a certain field, but what they did wrong was to not make the player to controll were the characters would stand.
I'd be glad to see another 3D version of the suikoden series, just if they do a better job. In III, the animations of the 3 main characters Hugo, Chris and Geddoe were the same (having the same walk/run cycles is really terrible....making a walk cycle takes like...20 mins), and when the enviroment becomes 3D , suddenly, it's quite annyoing to see the fat old man walking next to his twin, who's identical with him... xp When it's sprites, you kind of accept that...
Anyway, let's just hope they'll be more experienced for the coming one. 3nodding

definatly have to go with sprites, although the graphics in 3 were not as bad as they could have been. I think that there isnt enough newer games with different graphics styles most of the stuff i have seen (with noteable exceptions) is 3d. i agree that they could of kept going with the sprites. most of the 3d games i have seem lacking in quality as far as graphics go maybe i just have too high standards i dunno but it seems like most companies are rushing into 3d with out testing the waters much.

Personally, I am all for sprite based games. I am a firm believer that a game doesn't need good graphics to be a great game. My favorite games are pretty much all sprite based ( Suikoden 1 & 2, Star Ocean 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, Castlevania : SotN, Legend of Zelda : A Link to the Past, and Valkyrie Profile ) so I really don't think that being 3d makes a game better.
I actually really wish developers would go back to making sprite-based games, so many of those old-school games are still sooo much better then the newer games being released today.

Honestly, although i voted for the 3-D graphics of Suikoden III, i do understand where some are coming from with their views on I and II. 3nodding However, IMO, sprite-based games were that way for a reason. Very few companies had the technological know-how and/or game systems couldn't handle anything more without compromising gameplay. Check out the differences between the PS, PS1, and each "upgraded" model of the PS2 (the original 10000 model to today's 50001 [or Japan's 55000 model!] ) and you'll notice why games have changed as well. A prime example would be FF X-2! As much as I dislike FF, I have to admit the graphics are stunning and the sound is exceptional as well! Therefore, my vote goes for Suikoden III, and I can't wait for Suikoden IV (apparently to be now released here in January)! 4laugh twisted ninja

Umm... Well... My very first game was Final Fantasy Tactics, so I'm partial to sprites... I don't dislike the 3D entirely, though. It's nice to walk around the castle if it's in 3D, since it has more details and you have a better grasp of the...the.... umm... wossname... massiveness... sweatdrop But the main thing that bothered me was that some of the animations were choppy, e.g. Chris walking while mounted. But then again, you can't judge a game only by its graphics.
The characters are still as great as ever, but I can't compare the stories yet. I only dislike that the Tenkai Star isn't the "main character"... I'm not a big fan of Hugo... And.. um... That's part of the reason why I kind of stopped playing. sweatdrop
As for the music... Miki Higashino did a great job establishing the familiar melodies we know today... But for some reason, I seem to like Suikoden 3's music a lot... Michiru Yamane, Keiko Fukami, Masahiko Kimura.... Maybe it's the sound set they used? My favorite song in 3 is Old Castle by the Lake, Budehuc Castle... I could listen to that song for days on end and never get tired of it, kind of like that time when I listened to FFT's Tutorial music on loop for 4 hours straight with no breaks. From number 1 is... Gorgeous Scarleticia.... From number 2... Days Past.
Other than that, I put Suikoden 3 on equal terms with the others.

I liked the sprites better, in part because the game had a better feel to it. Also there were more fun animations like Nanami's reactions to events. The third while an ok game, just didn't seem to be connect well with the first two.

I would choose sprites over 3-d, just to try and get that ol' feel the first 2 games had. The 3d effects were cute in a sorta chibi way but the feel wasnt right T---T
I'm just wondering how it'll be when they release #4...

'That would be great if they made a sprite based game with the potential that PS2 or any other new-gen console has. It would be an awsome epic that I could easily associate with... I'm still having a hard time with the new Star Ocean game. 3-D RPGs just don't appeal to me much. I think 3-d is for FPS but then again Contra was great.'

It wasn't that bad... sweatdrop Leveling up new weapons was a pain, though... By the way, the Japanese name for Dark Cloud 2 is actually Dark Chronicle. Silly Americanized naming schemes...

Haha, well japanese give too much drama to everything they name. American parents are more likely to purchase Dark Cloud over Dark Chronicle. xp Though that is interesting how they decide to adjust names.
