*Spoilers*
The Simpsons live in a made up state called North Tacoma. In one of the commentaries, Matt Groening (Explaining the "NT" on Homer's drivers license) laughs and says, "I guess it stands for North Tacoma."
Also, for anyone that doesn't know, Comic Book Guy's real name is Geoff Albertson... I dunno if that guy who posted about him didn't know, or was just saying he took a long time trying to find out or what.

Since there are well over 100 "Springfields" in all of the US, I think the writers switch from State to State/ Springfield to Springfield according to the topic of that particular episode.
By doing so, they would be appealing to a wider audience, also contributing to the big question: "Which State?".

I was reading "Glamour Magazine" today (I know....but I like it!!) and I came across a letter to the Editor written by a woman from...get this: Shelbyville Kentucky. SO what? You may ask. Well, there is a Springfield Kentucky. AND? Well, Springfield and Shelbyville Kentucky are neighbouring cities
BUT!!!!
Guess what the name of Shelbyville's closest neighbour is.
Go on...guess!!
It is....
Simpsonville!!!!
So? Well, I thought it was a pretty significant discovery.
Anywho, I still maintain my opinion that Springfield is Anytown, USA but it is kind of coincidental. Don't you think?

Gary X This is actually an interesting question, and one that I don't think has an answer, as we're never conclusively told which state Springfield is set in. I'd be tempted to make an educated guess though, based on a few things we're told during the various episodes: In one episode there's a cameo appearence from The King Of The Hill family, who say: "We drove 2,000 miles for this?" As I'm sure we all know, King Of The Hill is set in Texas. Therefore, The Simpsons must be set within a 2,000 mile radius of the state of Texas (Yee-Haw). We're also told that Homer drove over the state line to a casino where he and Marge got married. That, to me, says Nevada. Therefore, we could probably make a safe guess at saying that The Simpsons are set in either Utah or Arizona. that could also be massachusetts because that is about 2000 miles and you can go over the state line to rhode Island to gamble
