Simon frowned. He had asked that question himself many times and never managed to come up with a sufficient answer. "I'd like to see the seashells," he said suddenly, eager for the change of subject and curious about the quests she mentioned. It was getting them badly off-topic, but a few side trips were probably inevitable. It was simply how Marne's mind worked.

Simon had moved to the right track: she beamed like the sun coming up, and immediately rifled around in her things until she pulled a tiny conch shell up in her hands. She passed it over to him, patting it as if it was a much-loved friend. "I got this on the beach when I met the sea-mermaidy things and got my creepy bikini outfit," she said happily. "Isn't it bitchin'? I wish I'd been able to take all that stuff home. Like that nachos stand. Have you ever had nachos? I can't wait to go on another quest. I'm going to take Soho with me this time. It was mega boring being on my own."

Simon shook his head at the nachos question. He was over two years old now (though he skipped celebrating his second birthday) and could honestly say he had never tried nachos. It suddenly seemed a grave oversight.
"It's a nice shell," said Simon. "You have a.;.. bikini?" He had too strong an interest in clothing to avoid asking the question, even if he reddened slightly in embarrassment at the word "bikini." It was one of those words he would never get used to saying, it simply went against his tastes.

"Oh, yeah! It's purple!"
Marne opened up the suitcase that she had been so lovingly trying to close; after going through a mountain of miscellaneous junk, she managed to pull out a frilly and extraordinarily odd lavender garment. She held it up against herself, posing, one hand at the back of her head like she'd seen models do. "Aquine's Grace! Doesn't it totally scream 'nympho ballerina'?"

The outfit was not much material-wise, but extremely well crafted, clearly by feien hands. No one else would have been able to create something so intricate with that particular brand of material melding that was a mainstay of feien construction. "Where did you get this?" He reached out to finger the bits of ruffle along the edge of the straps. There was a discernible tingle of power in the object.
Simon inhaled with elation. This was no mere outfit, it was a product of Artificing. Feien Artificing. And very good Artifice at that.

"It was on this rocky outcrop thing," Marne explained. "It took me hours to climb - I looked like a big old graze. Mucho gross. This was all folded up at the top. Pretty cool, huh? Even if lavender is so not my colour ever. Red hair. Purple. No go."

Simon examined Marne with an appraising eye. "The soft color balances your prellan very well," he said. It was intended as a technical assessment and not a compliment, but Marne took it as the latter.

And unfortunately, Marne and compliments were like, ... icecream and chocolate, or oreos and milk: or maybe dynamite and wire, because when both were mixed terrible things happened. She preened and hugged Simon hard around the middle, beaming. "Thank you so much! Wow, you're kind of charming! I'd ask you to be my boyfriend but I had a long sex education talk and they said I can't any more. I think Silva totally accused me of having crabs or something. I'd pee in his cereal only, you know, no urethra or anything. Isn't 'urethra' the best word?"

"Uh-HM," went Simon, and the red flush was more from the hug than the term urethra, which Simon considered wholly medical and scientific. He tried to lean away from the embrace with little success. "Why would you want one?" It was a bad question and Simon regretting asking it immediately after it left his mouth.

Suddenly the terrible hug was dropped, and Marne went back to resetting her luggage. (There were tiny, useless clasps made of Velcro. Damn you, Barbie.) "Boy, you know, sex is way more fun than breeding ever was. Now that? That was an almighty snore. I'd like to do it again, though. I'd like ten babies and for one of them to be called 'Madonna Britney'."

"Aren't you just a bit too young for that?" stammered Simon. He had not felt any need nor desire for sex since Yasha's departure, and quite thought those circumstances would never be repeated again. Especially when sex was associated in his head with Corvus's talk and bragging.

Gawd, you sound like Dee. She's always going on about how I'm way too young. - Doesn't anyone love you?" she added sympathetically. "I could try to set you up with someone. Me and Soho are like tiny, hot Cupids."
