No offence to those who liked it, this is just my conclusion: The only interest in the book was the whole theory about the church and Jesus, and since Dan Brown himself acknowledged that it was taken from Holy Blood Holy Grail, this makes him a mediocre author. Plus, if you watch a few documentaries on that theory, you will notice that they all lead to the fact that the theory has many big flaws in it.

Here are some of my thoughts:
I can't comment on whether or not Dan Brown is any good as an author because I haven't read his books, though frankly I have no desire to do so. From what I've heard, the Da Vinci Code and its related books are like a less fun version of Robert Anton Wilson and and Robert Shea's Illuminatus trilogy. By the way, the Illuminatus was supposed to be like a meta-conspiracy novel. The trilogy was written in 70's, and supposedly has all the conspiracy of Don Brown's novels without much religion.
Regardless of whether or not Dan Brown is any good, remember that there is always someone out there who is far worse than him and still making money off his/her novels. I have no idea who this person is, but he/she is out there, writing in English.
There will always be crappy writers for as long as humanity is around. The nice thing, however, is that enough people recognize them to be crappy writers. During a lifetime, these crappy writers may make boatloads of money, but in the end their work will not go into the annals of history as great literature. I say, let Dan Brown enjoy what he can. In twenty years or so, it's very possibly that people will start saying, "Dan who?"

I never noticed any grammatical errors, just some annoying parallels in the plots of the The DaVinci Code and an earlier book featuring Langdon called Angels and Demons.

DaVinci Code isn't so bad. No offense to those of you for whom this doesn't ring true, but it really seems to me that most people who say that either they 'didn't like it' or have 'no desire to read it' are merely saying so because they are offended by the heavy religious overtones of the book/movie. Personally it doesn't bother me because I don't believe anything the Bible says except for the fact that there is a god and that His son Jesus the Christ died for our sins (I mean, Adam and Eve story, true? No possible way).
It's that kind of senseless Christian vs. Christianity-Questioner squabbling that makes me wish I were a Jew. stare (Hey, Slip, care to let your Jewish side of the family convert me? whee )

I started to read the book and couldn't get into it. The characters annoyed me.
I don't care about the religious things, I watched a documentary on TV about it and basically got the whole plot line anyway. I just didn't like the book much, and I hate the DaVinci Code mania that it caused.

Hmm...I'll give you the grammatical errors. I found a lot of stuff that I thought could have been made more clear in not only DVC, but Angels and Demons, Deception Point, and a couple more of his novels (forgot the names). But the bane of the English language? I don't think so. There are undoubtedly writers out there that make Brown look like he's got a Ph.D. in English. As for the hulabaloo (sp?) about DVC, here's something interesting: How the Da Vinci Code Doesn't Work cool

He was saying that because Dan Brown's literature is just very badly written. Not to mention unaccurate, badly composed and childish.

I read the Da Vinci Code. I enjoyed it.
I thought I should read it to see what all the fuss was about, and it was an enjoyable read, but I've only read it once, and I don't really care to go through it again and nit-pick it death, which obviously has been. I understand that there are some glaring over-sights in some of the conclusions made in the book, but if you suspend beliefe, it's all good. Just make sure you come back to reality when you're finished.
I didn't realise how incredibly formulaic the book was untill I read Angels and Demons.

I admit his writing style makes you feel like you're reading something written by an over-excited 12 year old who stumbled upon some conspiracy without checking the facts first at times but you're got to give the author credit for one thing: he's good at writing suspense/conspiracy-ish kind of stories.

Liquid_Len Editors are to blame when there are one or two mistakes in a book not hundreds. I when through chapter one and two with a friend who found more then one mistake per page. That isn't insignificant. Comes from a guy who cant even spell himself. Wow. I'm trembling, that's how impressed I am stare
I loved the book. It made me think even more about religions and how much I love comparing them.
It is true that DB writes in a way that can be understood by every one, but so does JKR. Why? Because she wants her books to be able to be read by everyone. Has it ever occured to any of you that that might just be what Dan is trying to do?
And about that sentence in the first post, I would like to see how you, Liquid_Len, would have written it, because francly, my half asleep, half drunken mind can't come up with anything, and I'm usually at my best with english at this state. So please, re-write said sentence for me, and I shall tell you which one I, as a foreigner to the english langusge, deem best for all to understand.
...I'm sounding like a stuck up b***h. *Shrugs* I guess you hit my right buttons. Congrats.

Thank you!
Also, in defense of the history of my religion, I suggest that anyone who reads DVC should also read things like The Da Vinci Hoax, The Da Vinci Deception, and many Catholic history books. (I don't know of any Protestant ones.) Y'all'll see that his book doesn't have much at all to back it up.

DVC was never meant to be a book that you would look to for the answers in life. It's mainly fiction. Why people still discuss how right or wrong he is continues to amaze me. The fact that Dan chooses to bring in some heavily discussed topics, such as religion and the occult, is just something that holds his interrest.
I myself write novels with a religious touch to them, even though I am of no religion, it is a thing that interrests me greatly.
I could come up with plenty of reasons why I dislike religions as much as they fascinate me, but I am in no way looking for someone to chop my head of for some shallow facts that I know, and how well they say they konw their religion. I have done it before, and it made me want to kill those people for being so blind.

Well, let's not forget that the book's research was based on pretty shoddy research to begin with. I actually feel a little sorry for him because he probably put a lot of time and effort into these novels.
The book that Dan Brown drew on, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, has been labeled by most professional scholars as psuedohistorical at best. The Priory of Sion, presented as fact in both this book and DVC, was proved to be a hoax in the 1950's. The Opus Dei is real, but they will probably remain shrouded in mystery for a long time. There's just no way to tell what's going on with them. As for Jesus marry Magdelene, that's been proposed a number of times by other people long before DVC.
That's completely ignoring the masonic stuff, which I'll get into another time 3nodding
