Is Uchinaguchi still spoken? I thought very few people spoke it. I most learn from songs (tinsagu nu hana, etc). I think songs in this language are beautiful.

My okinawan friend (whom I lost contact with by now) said that the Japanese government wouldn't allow them to speak it and if they were caught they were beaten (his mom was beaten crying ). So they have to speak Japanese because the government said so. And on that article it's not that they're not willing it's their parents unwillingness to teach them and yes they use the Japanese Alphabets.)

Wow...She never mentioned that and I can't ask about it now 'cause she's gone.

*Saves links for later* Sorry but I can't read them right now.

I can't see the pictures...*Tries to fix it*

EDIT: Not working...any suggestions?

How long ago were these random beatings? I don't see why the government would have a problem with the Okinawan dialect. It is almost a separate language, but its still in the "Japonic" family, as was said, but its still like 70% similar to Japanese, though they're not mutually intelligible. But neither is the Akihabara dialect and the standard, but its still accepted.

I know that there is/has been discrimination against the Aninus ans Ainu language, but thats a different story.

Crap...I heard somewhere that Japanese consider it a dialect but foreigners consider it another language. I can't remember where I read it, but I'll add the source when I find it. Hopefully it wasn't in a book or something. I'm starting to lean heavily towards dialect though.

And I can't find うちなあぐち anywhere except as some kind of book.

I think he is referring towards the WWII era when Japanese colonies were not allowed to speak their own language and were forced to learn and speak Japanese.

I dont think the Japanese government would beat people for speaking the Okinawan language...or else I would be hearing the Okinawan folksongs on youtube directly from Okinawa.
