Marissa's eyes lit. She had almost forgotten how accustomed gypsies were to Fortunettes, and what a breath of fresh air it was. "A fox!" she exclaimed. She looked endearingly at Stasha's bundle. "Oh, my, she's a doll," she cooed. Reaching out one arm in a question, she asked "May I?" before putting Kale on the ground at her feet and warning him to stay there. Kale obliged, peering at the small child with utmost curiosity.

"Oh of course- I should have seen from his gorgeous tail. ...You have quite a beautiful tail, young man. And I bet you are just a sneaky little rascal, aren't you?" And as for Marissa's request, Stasha nodded enthusiastically. "You certainly may. Sarai's a sweetheart- she might hiss a little bit if she wakes up, but as soon as she smells you she'll be fine." She passed her cat-like daughter to the woman with a practiced ease.

Meanwhile, Stasha's brother, who lived in the wagon behind hers, had spotted another gypsy that hung slightly behind. Leax was a typical gypsy male- dark-eyed, hair swept about his brows, and a mysterious, traveller's glow to him. He went straight to Lorelei.

"Bella. It is so good to see you. ...I'm Leax." He bowed, looking away from her only for an instant as he did so- and then, his eyes connected with her again.

Lorelei blushed, catching the compliment and his unwavering gaze. She smiled, subconsciously holding Vanna closer.

"H-hello... I'm Lorelei." She glanced at her daughter, smile becoming slightly more relaxed. "This is my daughter, Vanna."

Vanna waved, giggling.

Cerces, whose wagon was near the head of her line, rushed forward, practically tripping on her heels to meet someone on the opposite line. "Greetings!" She called, before she ever reached Irina and her daughter. The blonde girl beamed- she was so excited. A red banya sat on her shoulder, gripping to stay on as his new master ran.

"Greetings!" She said again, once she was closer, and somewhat out of breath. "I'm Cerces! So great to meet you."

Irina was amazed to see a young girl run toward her excitedly, and she giggled as she watched the banya attempt to hang on. It probably would have been easier for it to fly!

Giving her an enthusiastic grin, Irina held out her hand in greeting. "I'm Irina! It's lovely to meet you. And this is Kalpana--you can call her Kal if you want to," she said, letting the badger wander down on the ground. She sniffed the air and shuffled around to the blonde gypsy's feet, nudging them with her flat nose.

"Looks like she wants some affection!" Irina giggled as Kal vied for the girl's attention. "Where has your caravan come from?"

"Two beautiful women!" Leax said, blowing a small, fatherly kiss to Vanna. "This truly is my lucky day." He connected eyes with Lorelei once more. "She is remarkable, Bella. ...My sister has one that seems about her age. What is her element?"

"Ooh, her breath tickles!" Cerces laughed, quite infectiously and bubbly. She leant down and gave her hand to Kalpana, hoping that the badger would get her smell and not mind a pet.

"Oh, we've come from all over! We were in Enallas nearly a week... and before that, we came from the Marshes! How about you?"

Lorelei laughed a little as Vanna reached out for the gypsy man. The only other man she'd ever met was Uncle Voltaire, and he was very very nice - so why shouldn't this man be, too? Still, she had thought most guys had some sort of pointy ears...

"Music, I believe, or at least sound. She seems to want you to hold her! Would you... I mean to say... is that all right?" Lorelei's cheeks were still red as she stepped a little closer to hand her daughter over.

"Oh, are you kidding? Come here, sweetheart." Leax reached out and took the little girl from its mother. "Oh, she's a darling." Leax had often held his niece- it was obvious the man was a natural with infants- or at least, with girls.

After some cooing and nose- kisses in which the gypsy man admired the beautiful infant, he returned his questioning to the mother, bumping the girl up and down gently on his hip.

"So, will she be gifted with flight, or will she seek the Protectorate?"

Lorelei blinked, mildly confused. She recalled hearing something concerning a protectorate when they had met the Filor at the Pythos, but...

"She used to fly, but I'm not sure about her future - I haven't asked whether she will get her wings back. And the Protectorate... I've only heard of it vaguely, in passing. What is it...?"

Watching Leax with Vanna, Lorelei relaxed a little, the blush fading from her cheeks. He reminded her of Voltaire, in a way - the same brotherly care. Oh, but gypsy families were large and lovely...

"You don't know of the Protectorate? It was the old guild of fliers, back when white magic was rife in the region. The Icarus Protectorate gave others the ability to fly, who seeked the runes. Now, they have been so long gone, that only those who have some innate ability to fly- who once had wings, or air elements- can fly, even with the full rune. ...I only ask because it would be a shame to keep her from her airborne destiny. If you do ever choose to seek, I have a friend to the south- Orrel, who you should seek out. He's a member of the Protectorate."

"Though those claws may look scary, she's really friendly," Irina assured her, watching as Kal dug around the girl's shoe, getting in there for a closer sniff. As she saw the hand come down, she sniffed it curiously, and realizing it was a good smell, proceeded to rub her face on the girl's fingers like she was a cat.

"The Marshes? Really? Supposedly that's where Kal came from," Irina said, her eyes widening slightly. "What's it like there?"

She proceeded to tell her about where she'd been with the caravan. "We came from the mountains," she said. "That's where I joined up with our caravan. I'm new to this type of family living. I've been by myself for years."

"If it begins to look like she won't regain her wings," Lor said, stepping a little closer so she could stroke her daughter's back feathers, "then I will most certainly heed your advice. If I should find your friend, should I say that Leax sent me?"

Vanna giggled, reacing out to play with the end of her mother's braid.

"The only thing is... if these runes are as rare as you say, one member of our family is already searching them out for her own daughter. I would hate to keep that from her."

"Really? This little sweet thing came from the Marshes? That's a surprise. They're all so secretive there. Some of the ones on the outskirts would talk with us- one of them kept creeping out at night and sneaking into the caravan circle, eating what we'd left in the firepot. He kept asking me if I had a crown, that he wanted a crown. Strange man. ...But deeper in, it was pretty dangerous. There was grey magic everywhere. Bizarre place. ...Why, are you headed there?"

"Oh, do say that Leax sent you. ...He'll be overcome by jealousy and do... anything to impress you." The dark-eyed gypsy shifted Vanna to his one arm, and used the other to take Lorelei's hand and plant a kiss on it. "Well, there's nothing wrong with seeking the runes for yourself. If it's her destiny, then it's her destiny. But she may still be blessed with flighted wings."

Vanna reacted with a happy giggle, watching with a great deal of interest as her mother blushed brightly. Lorelei had just been about to respond to Leax's... odd assurance, but now her mouth hung slightly open, surprised and slightly shocked. It wasn't as if it was the first time somebody had kissed her hand - a few suitors in the past, and Shamira, as well. It was just... well...

Lor just wasn't the sort of person who expected that sort of thing!

"Ah... o-of... of course..." she murmured after a moment.

Leax saw the bright blush, and took it as a sign. He gave Vanna and her happy giggle a soft hug, and held her close- partially for the joy of holding an infant... but also for the sake of keeping her mother from leaving quite yet.

"So... is your... husband with you?"
