Doe's mouth fell open, "Tricked? What do you mean? And the injection...they said it was to make sure we didn't have any disease or something to ensure our health!"
Glancing at both Oz and Jemma, she caught the silent message between them, still confused. Something didn't seem right.
"So, this isn't a school after all?" she let out a bitter laugh. Great, there was now weird stuff to put in her journal.

Oz battled internally with the situation, the struggle evident on his tormented facial expression. He was big teddy bear, he didn't want to reduce this poor girl to tears by telling her the truth, but neither would he want her to feel the same pain by being informed by a staff member. Oz had been phsyically sick for days after he found out.
He bit his bottom lip so hard that it eventually bled. As he licked his lip to stop the small nick, he ran a large hand through his ruffled, fluffy hair.
"No...this isn't a school..." he sighed heavily. "But...I'm not sure if I should tell you exactly why you're here...it might be upsetting..."
He tried to choose his words carefully. Maybe this way, Doe could decide whether to know or not.

Doe stared at Oz, wanting to know an answer, yet, she wasn't sure if she really wanted to know the truth. It seemed bad, due to the reluctance he was showing.
She pulled her legs to her chest, giving a little sigh. "I want to know why they lied to me," she said, trying to make her voice steady enough, "Is it that bad as you make it out to be?" she questioned, hugging her body together in a tight ball.

Oz grunted and sighed again, leaning his squishy rump against the rock, taking a spot near the youngster.
"I don't know everything myself, but from the other residents of this nut-house and what the lab staff have told me direct to my face...its well...ugh...pretty bad. You might find it cool, I dunno. The age gap is kinda weird," he started, but began to mumble in nervousness.
He'd never had to carry such a weighty issue before. And it felt even worse having to tell a young girl. He took a deep breath.
"That injection...it wasn't for infections and diseases...it will trigger some...changes...as the months go on...Do you really want to know more?"

Doe turned her head to look at the older man, listening carefully to his words. As he began stumbling over his words, she began to feel a little afraid.
"Changes?" she murmured, jst loud enough for Oz to hear her.

Oz grunted to himself, rubbing the back of his head and neck in a nervous manner. That usually chipper face had wrinkled into a frown and all the time, he wondered if was doing the right thing.
"I know this is going to be hard to accept...but...you're going to turn...into an animal..."
Oz wondered just hoe she'd react - disbelief, disgust, humour?

Doe froze, "An..an..animal?" she managed to stutter, a look of horror crossing her face.
Closing her eyes and breathing in painfully, she turned her helpless blur orbs, "You're...joking right?' she swallowed, trying to calm herself down. Oh. God. She hadn't prepared herself for such a...horrific answer.
She tried her best to make a smile appear on her pale face, leaning over to thwack him softly on the arm, "It's not a very funny joke Oz."

Oz's expressione became even more pained. Why was this so hard? How was it that the labstaff could break the news without even furrowing a wrinkle, whilst Oz was ready to collapse trying to break the news to a teenage girl.
"Its...not a joke...Doe...have you seen anybody else on the Island yet? Any of the people who have been here long before you or I? They're...different...kind of part human...part animal..."
He had to steady himself, both physically and mentally to try and tell her this. He had the water ready in case she felt faint, and he was always ready for a hug if she needed it.

Even before Oz had spoke, Doe knew that he wasn't joking to her. Either that, or he was a very good actor.
Falling silent at Oz's reply, the teenager bunched herself up tighter. "I haven't seen them yet, but...but couldn't they hurt others? I mean, with claws and stuff," she had read about anthro people, it was just...so hard to believe that it was real.
Shivering, partly because of the breeze and the awful knowledge she had just learnt, she felt tears at the side of her eyes. "I don't want to be an animal," she whispered. Why didn't that doctor tell her anything about this? Doctor Lockhart had looked so nice!

Oz felt sick to his stomach. There was no way he could make this situation better, and he was likely to make it worse. He still felt the bottomless pit inside himself when he discovered his fate. He took a swig of his water nervously.
What could he say? It'll be alright, and that maybe she'll come out a better person. Well...better animal-person to be precise.
"It sucks, I know. And I'm so sorry you had to find out this way, kid," he said sincerely. He knew what it was like to be in that position.

Doe sniffled, rubbing at her eyes, making them more red than they already were. "It's...not your fault," she hiccuped, tears already streaming down her cheeks.
Ducking her head, she took deep gulps of air to calm her down. She didn't want to be seen as some whiny kid that was a crybaby.
"I'm sorry you had to see that," she steadied herself.

"Nothing to be sorry about. I cried like a baby when I found out too," he made an effort to smile and lighten the mood. And it was all true.
"You look like you need some time to yourself," he said after a brief silence between the pair. He took a few steps from the rock, getting his headphones ready. "I can walk you back to your duplex if you wanna go back, or I can just leave you be."

"You did?" Doe murmured quizzically, almost calmed. Hesitating for a while, she let herself think, "That sounds good," she said, with a brief shadow of a smile."I'd like to go back then, if you don't mind accompanying a silly teenage girl."

Oz beamed a pleasant smile at the youngster, trying to lift her spirits just a little. He would have offered a hug, but a pudgy adult must be kinda scary for a little one like herself.
"You're not silly," he said cheerfully, but with that hint of reassurance one might find in a father-figure.
She had every right to be upset, but for some odd reason, Oz felt like it was now his duty to keep her safe. He'd started to feel a bit like this towards some of the other Islanders as well, but he'd never thought anything of it.
He stood up from the rock, and waited for her to show the way.

Doe grinned back at Oz, the smile tugging on the corners of her mouth. He seemed like a really nice guy to her, just like...a big brother she never had.
She clambered up, following him, picking up her journal and dusting some sand off it with her fingers, until she was satisfied that it was clean.
"Alright, we can go now," She skipped ahead a few steps and looked back at him, cocking her head to the side, waiting for him to follow.
Although she still felt sick in her stomach, she still kept a bright sunny positive outlook...it didn't have to be that bad, right?
