"If you're sure it's okay," Blue said softly. It felt odd. He didn't like to owe anything to anyone. Not even family. But it would be rude to refuse.
He smiled a little. "I like reading," he told Elana. "My friend Khia has a big library, and I read his books sometimes, and Dad says when I'm bigger we'll go to the biggest library in all the worlds."

"You can treat me next time we meet, so that we'll be quits." She smiled as she gave a quick nod.
"Reading? I like being read to more then reading to myself though. I've never been to a- " Elana started, but then remembered that she had been to one, a long time ago. "Well, maybe I had been to one... But not to read, though..."

"Okay." That helped, and Blue smiled gratefully at Elana. "Whatever kind you want."
"I like reading to myself, but I like being read to when I go to bed," Blue admitted. "It's nice when my dads read to me." He tilted his head at Elana. "Not to read?"

"Yes, I went there for... Something. I can't really remember what for." Elana replied, running her fingers along the rim of her shirt. "But I like being read to, because I can't read that well by myself, especially if I have to read it out loud."
"Oh, who's that with you?" A voice asked from behind the two children. Dragain smiled and held out an ice-cream cone.
"Blue, a new friend." Elana answered with a happy smile, "Mum, can you buy us 2 lime push pops, please? I'll eat this cone as well..."
"I'll eat this one, eating too many sweet and cold food is bad for you." Dragain smiled as she nodded at Blue. "Hello..."

"Sometimes reading out loud helps, because then you can sound out the words," Blue suggested helpfully.
He sat up straight and put his feet down off the seat when Dragain addressed him. "Hi," he answered, and put his hand out politely to be shaken. He wanted to bow, as he'd been taught was polite when meeting somebody new, but ... he couldn't really muster the energy to get off the bench just right this moment. He hoped the handshake would be okay. "It's nice to meet you."

"Maybe one day I'll be good enough to actually read out loud," Elana replied as she looked at Blue. "With enough practise."
Dragain nodded, and shook the hand with a smile, "Hello, nice to meet you too." She let go of the hand before walking off in the direction she had arrived from, to get the push pops.

"I could help you," Blue offered shyly. "I'm really good at reading."

"Really? That'll be great!" Elana replied in a soft cheer. With help, she'll be able to read out loud in no time. She gave Blue a grin and tilted her head to a side as a question came to her mind.
"Do you have any siblings?"

Blue nodded proudly. "I have - " here he paused and counted silently on his fingers - "four brothers and one sister. But some of them are all grown up and don't live with Dad and Shai and us." He tilted his head at Elana. "Do you?"

"I have so many siblings, it's annoying sometimes." Elana replied with a happy smile as she nodded. "I don't know how many there are, but they sure make lots and lots of noise!" She let out a soft giggle.
"But I like them all the same."

Blue pulled his foot up again so he could rest his chin on his knee. "I like mine, too," he replied softly. "Do you have any pets? I have a Zurui all my own. Her name is Ambyr."

Elana shook her head slowly, "A pet? I don't have one..." She paused and frowned, before her face lit up again after a brief moment. "But it must be great to have one!"
She smiled before giving a puzzled look, "Oh, wait, what's a Zurui?"

"It's nice to have something to take care of," Blue told Elana, very seriously. "Zurui are kind of like foxes, but not. Some of them have more tails than foxes. Ambyr only has one, but some of Dad's Zurui have more than that. Akasha has eight."

"Eight tails?" Elana exclaimed, unable to hold back her surprise. The foxes she had seen all look the same, with one rather bushy tail each. The thought of having more than one tail to each fox, or even a creature which resembles a fox, was new to her.
"Are they the same sizes as a fox?"

"Uh huh, mostly. A little bigger. The kits are tiny," Blue nodded. "Cariel is going to have kits soon. She says maybe I can have one."
