I didn't like his looks in the movie...he was way too Fabio-ish for me. I nearly kicked myself before Wishing You Were Someone Here Again when I realized I liked him. eek He didn't come off as whiney, I guess.

to be completely honest i have never liked Raoul for the simple reason i don't like the spoiled rotten rich kids that don't have to do anything in life and get everything they want! that just doesn't seem fair to me and Raoul is exactly that!

Besides, right now I'm considering an E/C where Erik gives up his voice to a witch in order to get his looks. Yes, it IS Little Mermaid inspired.

Man, that sounds really interesting, but then it's a line between the passion of the soul and then the heated passion of the flesh. *scratches head* But if he gives up his voice he'll be losing his only connection with Christine...what about his genius?? *tears out hair in frustration*

...oh crap

*runs to the wig store, but they only have FOP wigs*
NOOOOO!!!!! @.@ *falls to knees in agony*
*cough* anyways >.>....what was this topic about again?

Heh, that would be the whole point. Would he be willing to give up his one "beauty" in order to be able to walk the streets as a normal man? I've got some ideas for him to contact Christine anyhow. Like he could come to her as the Phantom- mute- and see what happens. Or, gah, I don't know. All I know is that Erik wouldn't be the only one striking such deals. Raoul would be doing something at the same time, leaving a very confused Christine. But yes, Erik's a genius, so he should be able to figure things out. I've got a few twists, too, but I don't want to give it away just in case I do start posting it. ^_~
(Blah, I need a fanfiction thread for this or I'm going to keep going off topic, which I don't want to do. Would start pissing off people, which makes me sad.)

Um, I forgot what the topic was... oh yes! Raoul.

Anway, Utakan, I wish that Raoul had gotten a bit more character development, but that's me. And also, back then his characterization probably wasn't anywhere near as cliche as it sounds to us now. It seems to me like Monsieur Leroux focused more on Erik and Christine, which works fine for most of us. ^_^ Raoul was like, "Hi, I'm the safe choice so pick me." And the Persian showed up and said, "Hi, I'm the hero though I get no thanks and no women in this story."

Actually, that's not entirely true of Raoul. In the book it's mentioned that he was young when his Father died and was left in the care of his sisters and older brother. Yes they spoiled him, but only with affection. It also mentions he became a sailor and actually worked out at sea for I think about three years before going to Paris when the storyline starts.
So he isn't entirely spoiled down to the core (perhaps just a little more than others) and he has done things in life that couldn't be counted as easy.

..Dear God, I've defended it! *sobs* Why hasth thou forsaken me?!

O_O *gigglesnort* Fabio... XDDD *quotes my friend's Italian textbook* "What hunger, Fabio?" Omfg... there was this random sentence and she translated the tense wrong... she was on the phone with me, and randomly shouted out of nowhere, "WHAT HUNGER, FABIO?!" It was.. so odd. XD

Well I saw the movie first, and Raoul didn't bother me. He was a bit foppish, but not to the point where I wanted to hang myself or anything.

However, the book reeeeally uberly annoyed me. Damn him.

Just also want to point out - the poll question doesn't make sense at all.

He never really came off as a jerk to me. Simply a man who would never take 'no' for an answer. Then again, what man ever does?

*Laughs at Utakan's post* Yes, really. That would certainly make an interesting alternative universe for the PotO world...

I'm considering attempting a phanphic in which Raoul is three dimensional and actually tolerable. I may push for likeable, but tolerable will do. It will be a story where nobody gets Christine, but she's forced by both men to figure herself out. She has to spend a year depending on herself and herself alone, and sort things out. But I need to find more plot points for that to work... bah. And I have no clue how it'd end...

eek I want a link to that fic. As soon as you get it written

I saw the musical when I was seven and I didn't really like Raoul much. And I still don't. Stupid fop. I feel like I should poke him, or something...anything...I dislike him greatly. GAH! He's so freakin' girly in the movie (sorry to Patrick about that) and he's just...un heroic.

Well I half agree with you. Raoul to me doesn't seem to ooze the "Here I come to save the day!" feel as he does the "get the girl and go!". I think more or less he couldn't really care what's going on, he merely wants to have Christine to himself and be done with it.

Bah, I'm in one of my self-contradicting modes concerning Raoul so... um... bear with me.
The guy seems very idealistic. On the plus side, he wants to marry Christine despite the obvious class differences and family's disapproval. He appears to want to treat her as an equal in some points of the story.
But on the other hand... he's very condescending, or appears to. He doesn't allow her to explain about the Angel of Music, and insists that Erik's power over is "a dream and nothing more". His attitude is, "I want you to be my equal, but you have to do everything I say." Um, what?
It reminds me of Jareth in Labyrinth. Remember the line, "Love me, do as I say and I will be your slave"? Um... no.
I was about to mention how he scoffs at her about the Phantom of the Opera, but that's open to discussion. After all, he MIGHT be saying that the Phantom isn't real- in which case, Raoul is stupider than any of us could have imagined. Which makes me sad for Christine. Or, he MIGHT be saying that the Phantom isn't a Phantom- he's just a madman.
Again, on the plus side, Raoul DOES love Christine. If all he wanted was her body, he would have pulled the whole "I be the lord, you be the maid, you do as I say" stunt and have had done with it. In which Erik would have Punjabbed him on the spot and millions of EC fans everywhere would have had tears of joy streaming down their faces like waterfalls. But I digress.
I guess he's just freakin' naive. He's a guy who has been raised in a wealthy environment with an idealistic nature. I wonder... maybe Erik winds up ridding him of a bit of that, as well as some of Christine's innocence?
Apologies for the long, incoherent rant.

Bold text in quote= Omfg, I was laughing at that all while reading the rest of what you had, Jurori. Good Lord, perhaps Raoul really is the dumb one in this escapade! XD

But I agree with you as I think I've already mentioned some of the points. Then again, women were nothing but baby ovens back then so I guess the act of trying to treat her equally was merely nothing more than what I called it-- an act. He wanted her and for anything to get in his way was calling the obstacle an illusion (hehe, obstacle illusion) or merely trying to tell her "You're nuts, come with me and bear my children!" ...Miroku pun somewhat un-intended.
But in a way, he and Erik are similar. They're both willing to do anything to have Christine, but it all depends on what the 'anything' is. For Erik, it's murder, blackmail, and fear. For Raoul, it's deception, false security, and the allure of the francs that line his pantaloon pockets. You cannot tell me Christine wasn't taunted with the thought of being a Viscountess (or Countess, considering old Philly went splash in the lake). But once you get down to it, it was all just things to win the love of a woman who was still thinking like a child in grievance of her Father. I think it had to do more with Raoul knew she was still in a childish state of mind and thus put on his happy "I'm here to protect you" face and handled her with the air of kindness and authority-- a Father-like gesture, if you will. Whilst Erik was the figure, Raoul was the enforcer. Which, bringing that into light, makes it hard for Christine to choose. Either she could have the man who replace her Father in her life or a man that would act like one.

...That got off-topic fast. >>
