When you get Materite, keep their levels balanced, it's a good way to level up.

*Possible Spoilers?* Okay, some random advice:
1) After you leave Midgar, you'll eventually run into this really tough worm thing that you can see (sorta) before it charges you. Don't try to beat it at this point in the game. Maybe with the help of the nearby Chocobo Farm you can avoid the worm with ease.. Kweh! 2)First time you see a forest area, wander around there for awhile and you should run into a Mysterious Ninja. If you play the dialogue afterward smartly, (Don't use the save crystal either) you can get a new addition to your party! 3)Summons are your best friends, just make sure not to burn all your resources summoning. Keep stocked on restoration items if at all possible. 4)While it might seem like just some strange hobby, Chocobo Breeding is in fact the way to find many many many secrets things. Knights of the Rounds (most powerful summon in the game) Vincent's final Limit Break, and various rare useful materia. 5)While all characters can use all skills, the game molds some people more toward magic casting. For example, Aeris is a great magic caster, but her physical attacks make Shinra soldiers giggle a bit. On the flip side, Barret is a beast in physical combat, but his magic is.. lacking. There are well balanced characters like Cloud that could be used for both. 6)Don't let the little details slide by. A little detail might lead to great treasuere in the form of weapons, materia, and secret bosses! 7)Cloud is the main character for a reason. I don't think I've ever let him leave my party..
Well, that's all I can think of.. Hope some of it helps.

when leveling up try not to neglect the "other" members of the team as there will be points in the game where you are forced to use them so its no good if they are too weak to get you back to the point where you can use your prefered party....
also whilst Yuffie is an*spoiler start* annoying materia stealing back stabber *spoiler end* she can be very usefull too, for instance she is needed to obtain the leviathan materia from Wutai and when she has her ultamate weapon she has the best succsess rate with the morph command.

Well other things to keep in mind is to check your stock whenever youre in a town. Low on potions? get a few. Low on softs? get a few. I try to keep 5-10 in my bag at all times. Dont have enough gill? Then chances are you need to level anyway and ti's time to run outside and work for your money!
The sooner you level the better! I actually started a game and before I entered the ractor sat and leveld for a while (they're soooo easy!) it makes later fights easier!
Side quests are fun, but the best time to do them (or most common time) is before entering the Northern Crator. By then you have the Highwind so you can get around, and plenty of gill to spend on achieving these quests.
If you'd like more specific help, ask more questions, I'll answer anything from indepth materia combinations, to where to get the best morphs! 3nodding

My advice is to take your time. It's what I'm doing. I have 2 games started: 1 to use for writing reference (I'm helping with Suka's novel write up) and the other one is for me to just take my time, wander the areas to look and find things. Unless you're timed in the area (best example is escaping the first reactor).

yea leveling up is really important dont be afraid to spend ages in the same place gaining exp and ap i found 'all' really useful and you should have it with cure, haste, barrier(wall)
so basicly if u spend ages leveling up at the beginning it will put u ahead for a while but rember u need to keep gaining exp and ap
oh and beware the underwater wepon
