Spotting has never worked for me in all my years. The only thing that it helps me do is keep my bearings. i always get dizzy.

You always get (a little) dizzy, even if you do spot. It's impossible not to get dizzy rolleyes

I know what you mean. I hate spotting. mad My teacher says I would be the best dancer in the class if I could spot! No matter how much I practice, I can never get it.

One thing that really helps my turns is to actually focus on the spot you are looking at. Sometimes I just pretend I'm looking at the same place, but I'm really not. Actually let your eyes focus on that spot for a split second, as long as you can, then whip it around.
It helps me to do paddle turns first, then try other things, like pirouettes.

Pink Snow Blossom Is spotting a probelm for anyone else? Or am I totally alone in this world? I have a real problem with it. I mean, I practice, and I really do try, but it's just hard for me. My dance teacher says I won't get into Dance Company 1 until I get it, but I don't think I ever will. Any tips? EDIT: things have gotten worse, my dance teacher's threatened to send me back to a basic level if I can't get the spot by September! Ack, I can NOT spot for anything. It's my worst nightmare! It really is, but whats even worse is when there is hardly anything too spot and you're not good at it anyways. Our old building was that way one wall (it was windows but kid on the steet kept distarcting some of the younger kids and were making noise n such so she covered the windows) was coverd in foil! so people would pick holes in the foil so we had something to spot.

I'm horrible at spotting! Ahh! I cant even count how many people I've run over! Finally I just zone out when I twirl and pretend to spot.

I can't spot very well, so I can ONLY do double pirouettes (as in I can't do singles, triples, etc...)... My teachers complain, but it never gets any better...

I have a trouble with it too. In my dance studio there's a television in the corner so when I go across the floor I focus on that. Just pick the same thing everytime and it gets easier. Well, in my opinion. The sticker on the wall is a good idea for practice.

What I find helps you to learn how to spot, it might sound weird, when you are brushing your teeth, spot! Whip your head around and find it in the mirroir! 3nodding It helps.

spotting can be a huge pain... i dont have a lot of trouble with it, but sometimes, i spot downward at the floor instead of straight ahead... at my dance school, there's a big smiley face sticker on the corner door to spot in case you have trouble... it helps a lot having something to focus on when you whip your head around

OMG. -hugs you- I have the exact same problem, and I thought I was alone too. THANK GOD there are others out there. I felt like an idiot and thought I was the only one who had trouble spotting. Okay so anyways (lol) yeah I have major trouble spotting. During jazz class, my turns are HORRIBLE. Like literally. I get really embarassed because of that. But ya gotta remember to just take it slowly. If you can't do a million turns, then start doing just 1 and getting good at that. And most of all practice spotting while doing that. When you master that, try doubles, then triples, and so on. Best advice I can give. o.<
