The Elementary Penguin I can't really comment intelligently on this, because I can't get my head around the idea of rock music having "crappy lyrics". That is one of the best things about rock - the lyrics. I don't mean to generalize and be as much of an arse as the people we're complaining about, but most of the rap/R&B/D&B/hip-hop that I've ever heard seems to be some ugly bloke saying: "yeh, everybody loves me, cause I'm so rich, yeh, everyone wants to shag me, cause I'm so rich" and some cosmetically enhanced dumb-as-a-post bint occasionally going: "oooh" in the background. As for dance music, it all seems to think it's about love, when it's really nothing more than a series of cinematic images: long golden hair, a perfect kiss - THAT'S NOT LOVE, IT'S LIBEDO! Lyrically, rock music seems to be one of the most intelligent modern styles there is. There is always a rock song that represents exactly how I feel - Travis "Why Does it Always Rain on me", Sex Pistols "Pretty Vancant", hell, even Jilted John "Gordon is a Moron"! Sorry, I'm getting carried away here - but if rock music does have a negative quality, then it's definately not the lyrics. I'm not sure what it is - I haven't found it yet. But then again, that is only by point of view. People who like rap would say that "Rocks is all prople screaming and yelling, trying to make them cut themselves. Just to lets you know, i do actually generally like rock music.

My point was supposed to be mainly about the lyrics. I don't know why, but I always think of the lyrics of a song as the most important part. The majority of rock songs, in my opinion, have real, intelligent, original lyrics - or at least funny lyrics; but in all the rap/R&B/D&B/hip-hop that I've heard, I can only think of three songs that weren't about how much money the singer has or how many women want to have sex with him. It might be because I've been exposed to all the wrong examples of the music; and yes, there are some rock songs that I dis-like the lyrics to (e.g. anything by Ramstein and Rob Zombie) but my point was based on general trends and averages that I've noticed.

I reckon the music you like is heavily influenced by the music you listen to growing up. While I was growing up, I listened to things like Fleetwood Mac and Dire Straits in my dad's car. I still like those bands, and others. I'm not to keen on modern rock, due to the almost complete lack of technical guitar work, even though i like some new bands. I generally like classic rock, and I like to play old songs.

Personal opinions about styles of music are one thing - lyrical intelligence is something completely different.

The Elementary Penguin DigitalTrowa EP, listen to some Atmosphere. Rap that isn't all about the bitches and hoes. Any particular CD? They only have like two as far as I know. I do like Atmosphere though. I was listening to them when I was still like a Freshman in highschool, but from my understanding they were around before that even. They never got big though, because they don't play to the masses, they only say what they feel. Atmosphere - Guarantees: http://youtube.com/watch?v=hoLxuyV9qz8

I wasn't aloud to argue what was music and wasn't music at my school. A teacher asked us to bring in what we thought was the most original artistic music we could find (music theory). I brought in a compilation disck of SPK, Merzbow, Sunn, and Throbbing Gristle. They weren't amused.
