"Who cares?" Diana said indifferently. "He left weeks ago. He took up arms; he is obviously off somewhere being a pathetic little louse, only in a different location. He might be dead," she added, with great satisfaction.

The Supreme Commander breathed heavily in and rolled her head. Exhaling, she asked, "Is it true?"
Zev stayed motionless, but at this point he was as wary of Rose/Diana as he was the Supreme Commander, perhaps more so. At least with the Commander he knew where he stood.

"Do I look like I can be bothered to lie?" the woman sneered. "Nell pathetically runs this rambling hell-hole now; probably for ever, considering that he's dead in a ditch. I'm no second-truth oracle."

The Supreme Commander smiled with patronizing sympathy. Her question was purposefully vague. "What he sees in you I cannot say," she said, clarifying. She turned her head away from Diana as if ignoring the other woman might force her into mere subservience like Ignacia.

"I'd rather ******** you than him," came back the classy answer. "He somehow finds comfort in Eleanor's day-to-day pathetics, not mine. I hate this place. I swapped one useless tyranny for another. - Zevulon, find out what this fool wants."

"Yes, do that," said the Commander to Zev, bemused by Diana's seemingly pointless antics.
Zev stared coldly, his breaths slow and even. The Supreme Commander's eyes were one of her less forgiving features but Zev had no fear of them. He knew enough of his self to understand there was something within him that could match her or withstand her for a time. He reached up and began to undo the collar of his crisp white shirt.
This only soured the Commander's mood further. Finally she addressed Ignacia. "Such barbarians the Lord Mage lives with. You can tell him I find his housemates a most unsatisfactory lot, and furthermore that if he ever wants to see his precious daughter alive, he should meet me at the top of the oceanside hill."
Though she was being addressed, Ignacia stayed quiet. Her insult was to ignore the Commander.

"Is that all?" Diana, who had only momentarily gone through the odd spasm that Rose had gone through when standing next to the door. "How dull."

"I know, a shame, isn't it?" said the Commander, once more the examining of fingernails tone. "I will very much look forward to seeing you again, to thank you for your help." The Commander pivoted on her heel, scraping her boots across the glazed floor surface with a smooth motion. The front door still sat ajar. She strode towards it.

It was Rose - not Diana - wearing her normal jeans and blouse, who sat down on the bottom step of the staircase with a thump. Her expression was all Rose; the change was so great it could have been - was - a totally different woman. And she looked absolutely miserable.
"What on earth are we going to do now?"
There was no imminent answer.
