((NOTE: See post seven before you start, and also have a look at eight if you want. ^^))
~~~~~~~~~
Today was perfect. With a gentle breeze and a scattering of clouds, it was the sort of day that made you want to sit outside for hours and enjoy being alive. It demanded kite-flying and picnics and little league sports. The air was none too cold, the sun none too hot. Even the insects seemed to respect this perfection: they did not swarm and bite in their usual numbers. If you described this day to a vampire, he would fill with longing for a mortal life before sucking out the last of yours and continuin gon his merry immortal way.
It was precisely the sort of day that was wasted indoors rummaging through piles of musty books, but for a small group of Forgotten and their daemons, this was precisely what they were tasked to do.
Of all the Forgotten, perhaps no one was more disappointed by this turn of events than Third. He lived for precisely these sorts of days. From the green of the treetops to the brown of the dirt, he wanted to see and feel and smell it all. It was the perfect day to go swimming, or hiking, or biking, or anything involving the great outdoors. The loss of the day seemed to him a great tragedy, and an equal tragedy to the daemon at his side.
Third looked again at Pippin's letter, badly photocopied. As much as he wanted to remain outside with Constant, the Library needed him, and Third was always willing to help when he was needed. Constant, too. Both were perfectly willing to push aside a day of indulgence to lend a hand.
Constant gave a little woof of curious alert. Further down the tree-lined path leading to the House, another Forgotten and daemon approached.
Kate held her jar close to her chest as she walked down a path. No stranger was about to bump into her and make her drop it for her carelessness. Despite the interesting nature of her Daemons, she knew that they were not about to go the same way as she wanted. Her pocket moved off, as if it had something stiff in it, and to any passerby this might be anything, from a wallet to a pack of gum, But in truth it was a knife, a special knife Kate has had with her since she could remember.
She just found often that people tried to take her knife from her if she displayed it. So sighing she simply continued to walk down the tree lined path to the house. Stuffed in her other pocket, tatters as it was, was a crumpled piece of paper. It was a note from Pippin and well, Kate had nothing else to do, so she figured that maybe if she could shine some matter of truth onto the strangeness of the library in the process, she might rest a little easier.
The list was whacked though, and it kept her thinking as she turned over the items in her mind. Some of them gave warnings; she would be good to head them. But some of those items seemed a little too unbelievable. Those were the items she planed on not bothering with, the rest, the realistic items, she could find, and thus, would put her energy into finding.
Kate focused her blurred eyes, it was well enough to let the path pass by unnoticed, but not to completely ignore the existence of another who was plainly looking at her. "Yes?" She asked the daemon, and in that light the other as well, her voice seemingly irritated at the unwanted attention she was receiving.
Despite the off-putting greeting, Third smiled easily at the younger Forgotten and Constant's tongue lolled and her tail began to wag. He could tell she was a fellow Forgotten. Constant smelled it on her scent as easily as she distinguished between a person and a squirrel.
Third's eyes fell on the jar, noting the insects. A daemon? Rather than assume it, he asked. "Hello, are you heading to the House as well? What have you got in your jar?" His voice was calm and friendly, already settled from its transition into manhood. Though he was quite tall and lanky compared to Kate, something in his demeanor seemed to place him at the same height as her, a quality of patience and respect not usually afforded children.
Kate considered the boy. She herself looked a fright, her hair was uneven everywhere and her clothing tattered. She wore no shoes and carried a jar with bugs in it. Should the fireflies be loose now, where they would not glow and one could assume she was from the street. He on the other hand looked calm, and was acting kind.
Maybe it is how he is Deception considered.
"Yes," Kate gave into the other's calm kind composure, "And fireflies." she continued towards the house, "My name is Kate." She figured it was best for him to be truthfully informed of who he was speaking with, and dismissed his passing gesture as formality to her abrupt question, even if it was left unanswered. She walked up to the boy. "What is your name?" She asked, hoping to jog his memory of manners. It was obvious he was one of her kind; the strange Daemon at his side confirmed that. Other questions could be saved for later.
"Third," came the answer. He crouched down so he was almost level with her and patted his daemon on the head. "And this is Constant. Pleased to meet you." He shoved the note into his coat pocket and extended his hand towards Kate. Apparently, he did have manners, but he was very modern about them, creating an air of informality and friendliness.
Kate fairly imagined that Third was decent enough to talk with. She moved her jar under one of her arms and extended her free hand to Third, grasped his and gave it a shake, "Same." She gestured to the jar with her head, "these two trouble makers are Thought and Deception," she explained. She figured it was only polite, as he had introduced his Daemon, that she introduce hers. "What brings you to the house? I assume that's where you are going at least." She glanced to the house, which was rather close to their proximity.
Third gave a small shrug. "I was asked to help Pippin find some missing things. And yourself?" His other hand kept up a steady massage on Constant's head, pleasing the daemon to no end.
"Definitely," said Third, flashing pearly white teeth as he rose. If she had not suggested it, he would have. It was the sort of simple logic that was hard to argue with. Third let Kate proceed ahead of him towards the House in a gentlemanly way, falling into step beside her. He had to watch his stride since his legs were so much longer.
Enthusiastic, Constant bounded ahead on the path, more like a dog eager to play than a thoroughly intelligent daemon. It was easy to compare her to a puppy. She was as large as a full-grown dog, but her features implied a more wolfish aspect, and for a wolf she was not yet full grown.
((my computer died, so i have to write it again, LOL))
The day was too hot, the sun too bright, and the porch much too uncomfortable; at least, that's what Ebony had been complaining about for the last half hour.
will kick you> Glass said irratably.
He was just as hot under the beating sun as Ebony was, his glass body unable to maintain his body temperature well.
"Oh dear, it looks as though we have some company," Ebony pointed towards the path that led to the house, where several figures could barely be made out in the hot midday sun.
Ebony arched her eyebrow, but said nothing, waiting for the newcomers to reach her.
Constant was first, nails digging grooves in the dirt as she ran to the point where it caused just a twinge of separation pain. She gave an excited "Arf!" at Ebony and Glass and wagged her tail. She was always happy to meet new people, especially if they happened to be the kind with daemons. She waited where she was for Third, Kate, and the fireflies to approach, not daring to go any farther.
The only sign of discomfort from Third was a slight twitch in the eye, but he quickly pushed it away and waved towards Ebony and her daemon.
Kate walked towards the house and up the steps after constant. At the top she saw a girl, as what could only be a daemon beside her. She gave a nod to the two. "Hello," She greeted, "I'm Kate."
It mildly irked her in the back of her mind somewhere that she was being pleasant, and open. But that irk was easily consoled with the thought that she didn't have to remain pleasant should company prove against it.
Ebony noticed the two travellers and their daemons but did not wave back; waving was beneath her. Glass gave an exaggerated snort, and trotted off the porch and on to the dirt.
"I don't see why." Ebony brushed off her dark, burgundy gown, and stood.
She waved half-heartedly.
"My name is Ebony. Ebony Black," Ebony gestured down to her daemon, who had stopped in the middle of the yard, peering inquisitively at the newcomers.
"That is Glass." Glass almost seemed to glow with pleasure; it wasn't often that Ebony talked so pleasantly to people she hadn't met. Well, any people at all.
Slipping easily into casual habits, Third gestured to himself and said simply, "Third. That's Constant." He inclined his head at the happy, bouncing canine daemon. She panted in agreement with her own name. "Pleasure to meet you." It seemed to be his standard line, grilled into him by a well-meaning parental figure.
