Hey, I'm on the ground in Japan, and the Girls here love Guys that: A)Are American (or at least come from america) B) Blond Hair/Blue Eyes C) [insert way here] A group of my friends and I went to a High School in Oogaki (大垣) for a Visit, and one of my group members picked up like 3 different girls at the high school, all of them his age. It's not that hard to pick up girls unless you are shy like me. but then again, those girls were all two years younger than me. (take a look at this pic here.) They were all there with us, and my friend picked up a couple of them. At least he got their numbers... which is better than what I've done.

Contrary to popular gaijin thought, Japanese girls arent falling head over heels for blue eyed, blond haired, Americans (which pretty much describes me). I dont really think visiting a high school is the right place to pick up girls, especially if you are older, but hey, love is love i guess. Once you have the actual experience of dating Japanese girls, you'll realize just how hard it is. Want to kiss on the second date? Dating in Japan is very different and even when I was in high school in Japan i found the atmosopher to be very different from Western countries. Now that i am in J-college, its even more confusing and the current J-girl friend, although I love her to pieces, has most expesnive tastes sad

Well its hard to generalize what dating is like, but what I can answer is that same sex dating is something definately not done in public but there are plent of bars and "stonewall clubs" that specialize in that. I honestly don`t know much about the Japanese guy dating a gaijin gal scinario except for that it is much easier for caucasion gals to get candidates than it is for anime loving gaijin to attract girls.
In my experience there are two main groups of gals that go to Japanese guys. The first group is the "English leech" group of girls who prey on nerdy, socially disfunctional English teachers for free lessons and don`t so much date as use their victims. The other group is the "I want a foreign boy friend as a status symbol" team. These gals generally demand more in the looks the department (tall, trim, good talker, etc) but are definately better than the aforementioned group. The bottom line is that if you presue Japanese with the objective of picking up chicks, you`ll only be disappointed. Also, for the love of god, don`t start talking to girls about what anime you like and the latest Naruto episode you saw, nothing is more unappealing in Japan than the Western Otaku.

This might be stereotypical, but a guy who has been living in Tokyo for some years now has made a "list" of foreigners depending on how japanese people like them... it IS stereotypical but (sadly?) true (for Tokyo at least); of course, it depends on who! but i have to say i notice that most of the time when I have a conversation with Japanese people about foreigners. This is not racist at all, and I am sure he didn't want to be favorable to anyone. Please don't be offended (there is nothing to be offended about though sweatdrop ).
(translation) "Every country has its foreigners. And every country holds a "foreigner's ranking". A class foreigners, B class foreigners... America does, Italy does... Why not Japan? The most interesting thing in this case is to understand how Japanese people judge the foreigners and how they construct their ranking. This is my first impression since I just arrived here, excuse me if I am being malicious (note: this was written back in 2002, one or two years after he arrived).
Korean people: Korea is near Japan (Southern Koreans) and in Japan there are many Koreans. Nowadays these 2 countries are being "friendly" to eachother but it wasn't always like this in the past, but I am not here to recall historical facts. However my impression is that Japanese people don't like them as much as they show it. [...] In Tokyo there is a Korean Town, but Korean people are very similar to Japanese, and the languages are a little (but a very little!) bit similar.
Chinese people: Here there are many chinese people. There is China Town in Yokohama, and Chinese food is really delicious (note: the most expensive foreign cooking restaurants are chinese). China is to Japan what Grecia was to Ancient Rome. The writing, the philosophy, the culture, the civilisation of Japan have Chinese origins. What about now? Now my mother-in-law (note: japanese) locks the windows at night to prevent Chinese people to come in while she sleeps. Some Japanese people think that the Chinese train in their motherland to do this kind of things after arriving to Japan. To be short: Japanese people don't like Chinese people. (note: my boyfriend, who is Japanese, totally agrees. but I also know a Chinese girl who gets along with Japanese people well)
Indians and other asians: My impression is that Japanese people also don't like Filipinos and Indians. Those Indian people I meet in the train have the same look as someone who is not being understood by the world around him.
African people: Almost none at all. Easy to recognize.
American people: Loved or hated? Idols, models or considered as those who are ruining this world? This contrast is present in the Japanese mind nowadays, but both feelings exist. It is the most distant culture to the Japanese culture. The American man is THE Foreigner, especially if he is white and with caucasian features. Soldiers are appreciated. I have to say that Americans are the foreigners who look lost the most, they walk around dressed up in elegant clothes or in casual wear, but in both cases their expression says "oh my god! where am i?"
English, Australians and other English speakers: That is the "english teachers category". Japanese people like to praise them but also to confront them. Every (note: exaggeration) Japanese girl wishes to have an English speaking boyfriend that would help her with Past Perfect or to read Shakespeare. Some girls even would like to have an English speaker as a husband, so that the children wouldn't have problems studying English as school.
The rest of western people and southamerican people: I am talking about the group of western people who doesn't speak English, from Germans to Brazilians. They are a great source of interest for Japanese people. How is an italian man built? Is it true that he eats pasta everyday, that he sings and listens to opera? What about germans? Are they precise? Are they still ready to the "Eroic Sacrifice" as in old times? And the French? Are they elegant? At least the Japanese seems to think that the French are the most polite. When I am polite towards a lady in the streets, she would turn to me and say "Merci!" (note: "thank you" in French). How can a Spanish man survive in Japan without bulls? I would say that these foreigners are the category of "sugoi gaijin" (great foreigners).
Feel free to add/correct/debate!

Foreign guys who want a Japanese girlfriend should be careful what they wish for. It's already been mentioned several times that a lot of girls just want a trophy foreign boyfriend. But then again a lot of guys just want a trophy Japanese girlfriend, so they could probably use each other.
I had one friend who studied in Japan, and before he went, he basically thought Japanese girls were the greatest thing on this planet and went on and on about how he was going to get a hot Japanese girlfriend. It probably goes without saying that he was sorely disappointed (anyone who goes into anything with expectations like that probably will be).
Two other classmates of mine who studied abroad in Japan came back with girlfriends . . . American girlfriends.
I do have one friend with a Japanese girlfriend, and she is high maintenence with a capital H. She is totally clingy, has expensive taste is gifts, and he doesn't have a cell phone because he knows she would call him all the time. I sometimes wonder if he would put up with her if she were American . .
Just be realistic, Japanese girls are like any other group of girls, some are great, and some are not so great.
