In which Sophie encounters the owner of Kluster.

Shad Croly
Shad pokes his head into the lab. "Hey, is the Doc here?"

Sophie C. Bell
Sophie looked up from her bored doodlings. "Uh...nope. He's sleeping. Or dead. Whichever came first." Sliding down from her perch on top of her desk table, she tilted her head, looking the man up and down. "You're Kluster's owner, right? Well, if you need anything, I can help."

Shad Croly
Shad lightly stared at the girl. "Um...yeah, I got a call from the Doc earlier today. He wanted to give me something but he never said what." He paused for a moment, taking a leaning stance up against a nearby wall. "Just a quesiton, you wouldn't happen to know what he wanted to give me, do you?"

Sophie C. Bell
Sophie looked back to her desk, then shook her head. "Nope. The Doc doesn't usually give me anything. He figure's I'll break it." She looked back to Shad, a grin on her face. "He's probably right. But don't worry, I'm sure he'll give it to you as soon as possible. He's organized like that. Speaking of which...how's Kluster doing? He should be getting a body sometime soon."

Shad Croly
"He's doing pretty good, considering he's still a chip. Took him to my parent's house for a while, spent some time talking to him, listen to music, stuff like that." Shad checked his watch quickly. "Huh...later then I thought. Listen, I've got to head back to Durem, give my reguards to the Doc." He nodded to Sophie before heading out the door.

Sophie C. Bell
"Well, I hope 'The Good Doctor' didn't lose what you needed. See you later."

Sophie watched the young man leave, her head still tilted. It slightly peeved her, that this stranger got a Kybernetik before she did, but she supposed it was simply a matter of responsibility.

Oh well. She'd just have to build her own, then.

In which Sophie hears of a certain broken chip...

Doc Albert
The Doc walks out of the lab, wiping his hands on his lab coat, just in time to see the door close. He looks at Sophie. "Who was that? Did Shad ever stop by?"

Sophie C. Bell
"Oh, so you're alive? That's nice," Sophie commented, turning around in an attempt to be nonchalant. However, as her weight shifted from one to the other, she stumbled, causing the entire play to go to ruin. "Yeah, Shad was here: you just missed him. He said he was coming to pick something up?" She asked in inquiry, tilting her head. "You could have left it with me, and I woulda handled it, Doc."

Doc Albert
"No," the Doc says. "I needed to give it to him and tell him some things personally." He shrugs, "But it can wait. Sophie, there's a brain chip in my wastebasket. It has a few broken transistors, and I don't want it to disappear, you hear me?"

And with that, he turns and takes long strides towards the break room.

Sophie C. Bell
"No disappearing, eh?" Sophie mumbled to herself as the Doc left. "Well, I suppose it can't disappear if the trash is taken out..."

And with that, Sophie entered where the Doc had come from, on a mission of her own.

Doc Albert
Doc Albert filled himself a cup of coffee. A sense of apprehension was stirring in him. Swallowing a mouthfull of the stale, bitter liquid, he realized why. "I shouldn't have said anything about the brain chip..."

Sophie C. Bell
Sophie found the chip rather easily: after all, it was right where he had said where it was. However, on his desk was a new file, and, as always, Sophie was curious. New files meant new owners, and who that owner was would decide whether or not she could still get away with exploding chemicals in the microwave.

After all, the owners needed to see the utmost of care in their work.

Flipping open the file, Sophie searched for designation...Mischief. Mischief had a parent now? Why didn't the Doc tell her? She helped the design, after all! Too frustrated to remember the chip for the moment, Sophie closed the file with a slam, then marched out of the room, ready to whine on her internet diary.

It wasn't until later that Sophie returned for the chip, and by the time she had, it seemed the Doc had already put more trash in his bin. When she found the chip, it was broken, and badly in need of repair. Frantically, she rummaged through the papers, finding as many pieces as possible. A noise made her stand straight up from her kneeling position, shoving the chip pieces in her pocket. She then inconspicuosly lifted the trash bin, taking it outside to be dumped.

Whether or not The Good Doctor wanted it, Sophie would have her own Kybernetik.

In which Sophie is distracted from her ultimate goal by a self-proclaimed chore.

Sophie C. Bell
Sophie looked up with an innocent grin as she proclaimed, "I'm gonna take out the trash." With an also innocent whistle, she lifted the bin and proceeded to exit the room.

Doc Albert
Doc calls back from the break room. "About time you started pulling your own weight around here!

Sophie C. Bell
"Sure thing, Doc," Sophie called back, opening the door with her foot. She then mumbled to herself, "Whatever." It wasn't the trash she cared about: it was the crumbled chip in her pocket.

Doc Albert
Doc put a fresh pot of coffee on and wondered what he was forgetting was in the trash. Unable to think of anything, he shrugged and inhaled the aroma of "teh bean."

Silverah
Silverah walks up to the lab and almost collides with Sophie, who is lugging trash. "Woah!" she squeals, jumping out of the way. "Do you know where the Doc is?"

Sophie C. Bell
Sophie moved out of the way just in time, only to hear a decisive crunch as her pocket hit the wall. That was going to be even more to work on. Sighing, she jerked her head inside. "He's in there. Be forewarned, though: the man has coffee." With that, she continued walking to the curb, where the trash could be properly deposited.

The trash was taken care of: good. Everything was taken care of, at least everything that needed to be taken care of to make sure that Sophie would not be missed for the next few hours. It was lunchtime: even the doctor knew better than to look for Sophie during lunch. It was now that she could work on the chip.

Locking the door behind her, Sophie faced her room. It wasn't much, or much in the way of furniture, but what did you expect from a spare room in a lab? At least it had a computer left in there.

She cleaned her random clutter from her table, then rummaged through her pocket, producing the chip pieces one by one. It was a mess: was this chip even worth repairing? Even then, she could hear the excited chatter from down the hall at a Kyernetik's growth. If she were ever to get a chance, this would be it.

Besides, you didn't throw broken people in the trash.

First, she lined up all the pieces. It looked right, but Sophie couldn't be sure, and pulled up the Kybernetika file on the server to look at a picture as a reference. Having the chip for the most part put together, she plugged in a wood-burning tool, which was really all she had to reassemble the thing.

Poor, poor Kybernetik.

Sophie sighed, knowing she wouldn't get today's lunch at her pace. But, it was a small sacrifice to knowing that soon, she'd have someone of her own.
PostPosted: Mon Jun 05, 2006 7:20 am

Sophie took longer than expected to finish the chip: it wasn't until the next morning that she unlocked the room, eyes groggy and stomach empty.

Not a good combination.

She still had to come back later, though: the chip was having...complications, so to say. She couldn't get the emotions drive to properly work, seeing as how it had been in the middle of the break. Of course, motor functions were fine, as she had fixed them to perfection. But now, she likely needed specialist's help, and there was no way she could tell the Doc any time soon. If she didn't get the Kybernetik in a body, there was no guarantee that the Doc wouldn't destroy the chip.

So, she found her way to the parts room, a larger folded-up box under her arm. The Doc wasn't going to miss the parts anyway: he always built more. But, as always, there were complications. Arms and legs were easy enough to scrounge for, but it took her at least an hour to collect six fingers and ten toes: she would just build the other fingers herself. A torso was also easy enough to find, but the part she needed most wasn't there.

A head.

Despair began to fill within her: she couldn't simply rebuild a head. Frantically, she scrambled through the pile of parts, not caring that she was making quite a noise about it, and nearly screamed in excitement when she found a round piece of metal. She lifted it up in examination, but her heart sank. The head had no face, or at least not a human one. It was just sensory parts.

Oh well. A face she could build. She tossed the final part into the box, then snuck out with a quiet run back to her room, slamming the door behind her and lockng it. She then confidently raised her wrench: she had work to do.

In which Sophie spills the beans...erm, bolts.

Sophie C. Bell
It had been a long two days, but Sophie couldn't take it anymore. She was tired. Hungry. Frustrated that she couldn't get the emotions systems to work. Well, it didn't matter. She was going to install the chip that day, and maybe then the Doc would help her.

Entering the lab's rec room, she scrounged through the refridgerater, grateful to the freezer gods that some good chinese was left. Poking the rice with the chopsticks first, she began to slurp in the food, refridgerator door still open.

Doc Albert
"And where exactly have you been the last two days?" Doc asks from the doorway. He's got quite a tone of authority in his voice. "You take out the trash, you vanish, and I'm missing parts. Sophie Cassandra Bell, what have you been up to?" He strides over and whips the box of rice out of her hand. "And I'll have you know I was saving that for dinner."

Sophie C. Bell
"One," Sophie paused, glaring at the stolen food. She had found it first, and at the moment was a firm believer of the finders keepers rule, "my middle name is Cherise, not Cassandra. Two, I think I'm old enough to disappear for a few days without anyone worrying."

She closed the refridgerator door, but not without giving it a final lookover for any other food that might be in there.

"But, anyways...I was thinking, and I've been curious about how you get the emotions systems of a Kybernetik to work. I mean, emotions are so complex: how'd you pull it off?" She tried to be nonchalant, not all too interested, but she was taking mental notes: what the Doc said would be her key to fixing her little girl.

Doc Albert
Doc is slightly taken aback at the change of subject, but is none the less happy to talk about his work. "It's all in the emotional capacitator - it's a pair of synapses on the chip. I had to throw away that one a few days ago because somehow they didn't get hooked up at all and fell off. I couldn't have that happening! But anyways, they're rather important to the chip's human interpretation functions if nothing else. But they have to be built in when the chip is first constructed."

He pauses. Cherise? What was my sister thinking?

Sophie C. Bell
A look of utter despair filled Sophie's face before she could even begin to try and gain composure. Built in there when first constructed?! But that means- "Doc, come with me." On a whim and a bit of slightly digested chinese food, Sophie grabbed the Doc's arm, leading him to her room. She unlocked the door, then let him inside, showing the fully constructed body of the child Kybernetik, face painted, chip by it's side.

"So you mean that her chip can't be fixed? Ever???"

Doc Albert
Doc swallowed the urge to yell at his neice, now knowing where the parts had gone. The anger was eclipsed by amazement - Sophie had built this all by herself? None the less, he had to tell the truth. "No, I'm afraid that a chip that was in that bad a condition will never feel or understand emotions on the same level as a human or unhampered Kybernetik will. There's a similar disorder in humans - autism, it's called, but I digress - She may compensate, or try to. There's a blank spot in her coding, and I don't know what she'll replace it with." He picks up the chip and admires the expertise with which it has been repaired. After Sophie put in so much work, it would be a crime to deny her.

"You want this one?" he confirmed. Without even waiting for an answer, he strode over and propped the child into a sitting position, noting that the design Sophie had gone with was very similar to the one for Kayole. It was silly not to notice - Kayole's chip was a non-damaged incarnate of this one. The personality predispositions were rather similar, suposing this one's personality had anything left to it. Even he, the creator, was not entirely sure of how data was stored on the chip. After all, the code and designs had all come to him in a vision after he'd slipped and hit his head on the rim of the bathtub one morning.

"What are you going to name her?"

Sophie C. Bell
"Alia..." Sophie muttered, biting her lip. Her heart was pounding in her head: it felt like, after all her hard work, she had failed. Autism? Hers would be autistic compared to the others? "Is there...Is there any way to fix the blank coding? Put something there? I mean...I can rebuild a better face later, but isn't there something we can do for her chip?"

She winced as the Doc lifted the body: the past few days she had been so delicate with the body, and in comparison he was flopping it around like a madman. Quietly holding her hands together, she felt like a frantic parent seeing her child sent off to surgery. That, or getting her computer upgraded. She fumbled with her own fingers for a while, waiting for an answer.

Doc Albert
User ImageDoc winces, wishing he'd used smaller words. "The chips are programmed to act like a human brain. When a human brain has a sense knocked offline, the other senses compensate. She'll compensate. I've got a good feeling that she'll compensate for her lack of emotions. Maybe she'll learn what she should feel and how to imitate it? I don't know exactly. But it is a very good chance that she'll compensate."

He ruffles around in Alia's blond hair and flips up a small panel on the back of the head. Sophie's done an excellent job of installing the hardware. "So let's put her in and see what she does, shall we?"

He gently eases the chip into the slot and closes the panel. Then, he watches the kybernetik expectantly.

At first, there is nothing.

And then, slowly, a gleam comes up behind Alia's good eye. Her head swivels fluidly to glance quickly around the room, and then down.

Without emotional data, her base programming seems to have a slight inferiority complex.

But she'll compensate. Eventually, she'll learn.

Sophie C. Bell
"...Alia?"

The bot took a second to comprehend, then swiveled her head towards her redesigner. "Sophie," the bot confirmed, a voice understanding, but cold nonetheless. Alia walked forward, then paused, movements jerky as she placed a hand on Sophie's leg. "Sophie, she confirmed again, then looked up at the man. "Doc. Sophie. Doc." As she repeated each name, she looked at each person, before sitting back on Sophie's bed. "Bed."

Sophie gave Doc a meek grin, but sadly, it did nothing to ease her mind. It was her fault that Alia wouldn't be normal, and she would simply have to live with that.

In which Sophie shows Alia to the world...

Shad Croly
Hello Sophie! It seems my internet is funtioninng properly now after about 3 days of constant trouble. Is the Doc is? I was hoping to get Kluster water-proofed before I left for the summer. Ya know, just in case you all decided to go to the beach or run through a sprinkler or something.

Sophie C. Bell
Sophie looked up from her desk, seeming to be scanning some notes. "Actually, I don't know where the Doc is. I'd go look around myself, but I don't think he's too happy with me."

A Kybernetik entered the room quietly, walking with cold confidence to Sophie's desk. The girl seemed different from the others, though: her hair was stiff, her face not even remotely human-looking. She looked like something out of a New Orleans storybook, down to clothing and everything. Softly she affirmed who she was looking at: "Sophie." She then paused, looking at the two. "Sophie, there are visitors here." Although the voice was human, the tone was not: there seemed to be no life in it.

Sophie grinned sheepishly. "This is why." She then squeezed Alia's hand for assurance, then led her forward. "Alia, this is Shad, and this is Kluster. Remember, I read the files to you?" The bot took a moment to comprehend, then affirmed: "Shad. Kluster."

Shad Croly
Shad looked from Sophie, to the new Kybernetic, to Kluster and then around again."Is...there something wrong with her? She doesn't seem like any of the Kybernetiks I've ever seen." Technically a short truth. The only Kybernetiks he'd ever seen where the pictures in the catalogue and Kluster.

Kluster remained hidden behind the teen. The Kybernetik's hands were griped to the leg of Shad's slacks, his head peaking out from his hiding place behind his 'father'. "Who is she, Da?"

Shad had the same look of confusion as Kluster did. "That's what I'd like to know." He looked as Sophie again. "Mind helping a couple of clueless joes?"

"Our names aren't Joe." Kluster commented.

Shad fought back the urge to laugh.

Doc Albert
"She hasn't got an emotions unit," Doc says, saving Sophie an explanation as he comes out of the lab. "Good morning, Shad. Kluster. Are you two here for waterproofing? Yes? Right this way, then." He turns to go back into the lab and beckons for them to follow.

Sophie C. Bell
Sophie watched them leave with a smile, but as soon as the door closed, sighed. Couldn't Shad have been the tiniest bit more sensitive as to her Kybernetik? She looked back at Alia, who had already logged on to the server on Sophie's front desk computer, chatting in binary code to her desktop. Not that Alia cares, but still...

"Alia, let's go in my room. I'll show you how to work a DVD." Alia looked up from her workplace. "DVD?" Her voice showed only a basic hint of inquiry. "Yes, Alia, DVD. C'mon, I'll show you." Taking the Kybernetiks hand, she logged off, then began walking upstairs to her room, wondering what a robot child would like to watch.

Sophie slumped against her desk, yawning as she toyed with her hair. Since the Doc had left, life had become...boring? Not that Sophie had reservations with tinkering around in the lab, but Alia had pointed out on more than one occasion that the Doc would likely not be so appreciative.

"Sophie, your computer is in need of a virus clean-up. Should I do it for you?" the young Kybernetik asked, tilting her head in question. After all, Alia had already handled the computer in the bedroom, and there wasn't much for the robot to do, either.

"Sure, if you want," Sophie replied, standing up to stretch her legs as she watched the girl's silver fingers fly. As long as it kept the little one occupied, Sophie didn't care. After a moment of silence (except for typing, of course), the Kybernetik spoke again, which meant that she wasn't being occupied.

"Other people think I'm different. Kluster gave me looks that people identify with that of seeing something strange. Do I have a malfunction? Perhaps I can fix myself, too."

Sophie sighed, looking back at Alia. "Right now, your facial features aren't that right, because when I was building you, I couldn't find the parts. We'll have you fixed, though: don't worry."

"I won't," Alia stoicly replied, still typing away. "I just noticed that it put your vital stats in a state of distress, that moment. Humans in continued states of distress tend to have shorter life spans." She looked up from her typing, taking in the view.

Sophie smiled weakly, then wrapped her arms around Alia, giving her a hug. "Oh, I'll be fine. Don't worry about me."

"I already told you I wouldn't."

-A Journal Entry from Sophie's POV-

In regards to the Kybernetika I have made, dated July 3, 2006:

I think it's possible that I've made a mistake in doing this without the Doc's consent. After all, Alia's just so...different. She's not interacting like the others, and I'm concerned with how it will affect her current and later development. True, I have constructed pieces for a face for her, but there's no way I'll be finished in time to put it on the pre-adolescent form: I fear she won't look relatively human until her teenage change.

I must note, however, that she has made much progress in imitating: whether it be other Kybernetik children, or characters in films I have shown her to keep her occupied. While she is imitating something, she is rather convincing in her tone of voice and acting: it is for these select moments that she looks and acts 'normal.'

I don't think it's ethically right to abort her data at this point in time, but I still don't know what to do...maybe at a later time, the Doc can fix her.

In Which Sophie has to Separate Father and Son...

Shad Croly
Kluster held tight onto Shad's hand as the two of them walked towards the Doc's lab. It had been a good 3 weeks since they had kept in contact with the old man and Shad was almost blaming himself.

It was his dire business trip to Japan he was forced to take that was occupying all of his time and taking it away from being there for Kluster. Shad knew Kluster understood the situation more then the Kybernetic let on.

Kluster sat on Shad's shoulders, the two of them in a silence as they walked, Shad toting a suitcase filled with Kluster's things behind him. "You know this isn't permentant, right?" Shad asked.

Kluster just nodded, staying silent.

"And I'm going to call and check up on you whenever I can, right?"

Kluster nodded again.

Shad hung his head, almost in a defeated way. What he wouldn't give to spend more time with his son.

The Kybernetic leaned against Shad's head. The Doc's lab was only a few yards away now. It was a short walk but the situation made it seem infinate. Shad grabbed Kluster by the waist and set him on the ground, still holding onto Kluster's hand.

Shad pushed the front door open with his foot, escorting Kluster and his luggage inside. "Doc? Sophie? I'm here..." he called out, silently wishing no one would answer.

Sophie C. Bell
Sophie lifted her head from it's resting position in her palm, standing up from her desk. As usual, it had been a lazy day at the labs, and the company of anyone made her feel warm and welcome.

It didn't seem to be the case for the other two, who looked forlorn as ever. However, it wasn't anything Sophie could change, so she went ahead and answered in a positive tone. "Hello, Shad. Ready to drop off Kluster?" she squatted down to the young bot's height, then gave a reassuring smile. "It'll be alright. Your dad'll be back in no time, but until then, I've got lots of things you can do." She almost mentioned Alia, but remembered how Kluster had given her odd looks in the previous encounter, so she just left it at that.

Taking the bags, she put them by her desk, then pulled some papers from a file, signing them with a pen and then ushering Shad over to the desk himself. "I just need you to find some verification, and then I'll get Kluster settled, okay?"

"Sophie, are the visitors staying this time?"

Alia calmly walked down the stairs, no bounce in her step like a regular child would. Stopping at the young woman's side, she peered at the two with her good eye, the other one merely a dim glow. She didn't understand how awkward the situation already was, and as such made no attempt to fake sympathy. "It is Shad, and Kluster."

Shad Croly
Shad nodded. He pulled a pen from his pocket signing any paper put out for him. "I'll be home on the 17th if everything goes smoothly." He stated. He pocketed the pen and handed the papers back to Sophie.

He knelt know and gave Kluster a hug. After the break, he looked into the Kubernetik's eyes. "I'm going to be home as soon as I can. I'll call every chance I get."

Kluster simply nodded again, on the verge of tears. That was, if Kybernetiks could even cry.

Shad paused and reached into a pocket, pulled out a small disk. "Remember this?"

Kluster's eyes widened for a moment. "You wouldn't..." The bots voice was filled in a mixture of somewhat panic and surprise.

This time it was Shad who nodded. "I've been loathing my bosses since I heard of this trip so if it's okay with you, I want to use it."

Kluster thought it ofer for a moment, a mischivous smile crossing his face. "Yeah!"

They shared a laugh as Shad stood back up. He gave Sophie a wink before pocketing the disk again. "I'll see you guys in three weeks. Maybe less if I get fired."

Sophie C. Bell
"Well, it's all settled then," Sophie confirmed, checking over the papers before putting them in their respective files. "I hope you enjoy your trip," she said with a wave, going around to her desk and typing in a few codes. She then came back around and picked up the bags, looking to her own Kybernetik. "Alia, could you show Kluster around the facilities? I'll go put his bags in the room." The young bot nodded, then took Kluster's hand, leading him into the main lab area, only pausing to look up as Sophie began the trek up the stairs to the living quarters.

"Follow me: I know where the servers are all based."

In Which Sophie is Given a Peace Offering in Regards to Peaseblossom...

YvetteEmilieDupont
Yvette Saw Sophies Office as she saw Kluster and Shad walk in, she got up going over to the office Peaseblossom following her. She looked in at Sophie when Shad left she walked in looking at Sophie, "Hi Sophie I have a few simple questions for you about Peaseblossom. She said down offering Sophie a cupcake with blue and green sprinkles on it.

Peaseblossom from Yvette to Sophie not saying anything holding Titania close to her messing with the dolls foral 60's patterned dress Yvette had made for her.

Yvette took off her messenger back taking out a notebook that had clothing sketches in it with random things squribbled around the pictures. Yvette flipped around a bit finding the questions smiling, "Okay they really are simple won't take much time. Peaseblossom can't eat can she?... Can I make her other clothes other than the ones she's wearing, or do you all thing it's best if I don't expand to much apon what you have provided for me, "Yvette took a short pause between each question as if letting each one sink into Sophie. "Can she travel with long distances?"

Peaseblossom took the new science magizine from Yvette's bag and started flipping through it. She set Titania on her lap then held the magizine by her lap as if letting Titania see the articles too.

Sophie C. Bell
"Hello, Yvette," Sophie replied, catching her breath from having to run down the flight of stairs to greet the girl after putting Kluster's things away. She blinked at the offering, then took it with weary hands, thinking to later scan it before eating it: one could never be too careful with food from hands you didn't know. "Uhm, thanks."

Bombarded with questions, her mind went into overload, and she had to think an extra moment before answering. "Well, Peaseblossom isn't able to eat with her current configurations, but I'm sure the Doc can make her capable with her next change when she occurs. And, y'know, if he says no, I've got a wrench and a few parts in the back, but I'm not sure how it'd turn out...it'd be best to hear from the Doc.

"And as for clothing? You could if you wanted, but in a little while she'll be a good bit taller, so she wouldn't fit in them anymore, and it'd be a waste of efforts. I can give you her measurements for her next body, though, if you'd like." True, the Doc probably wouldn't agree with giving out such classified information, but Sophie at this point didn't really care. Turning to her desk, she put the cupcake down, typing her username and password into the computer. "Would you like to do that, instead? Peaseblossom's due for her growing in a few weeks, anyways."

YvetteEmilieDupont
Yvette smiled sweetly, "I would like that to get her measurements for her next stage. I'm sorry I flodded you with questions just you all seem so busy, and I wouldn't want to take up anymore time." Yvette smiled at Peaseblossom happily.

Peaseblossom watched Sophie typing speaking in a soft shy voice, "How is Alia doing Sophie?"

Yvette looked kind of confused but didnt' say anything her attention fading from the conversation.

Sophie C. Bell
Sophie clicked twice, and a sheet printed out, several measurements and blueprints littering the page. She handed the paper to the young woman, then shut down her computer, looking down to Peaseblossom with a tender smile.

"She's doing well, all things considering. We've already located a significant amount of face parts for her next change."

Translated from Binary Code, it seems that Alia has also been taking notes...

Sophie has not been committed to normal human routine, as pertains to their instincts. She spends the daylight hours in a vegitative state, then is active during the nighttime. As humans are diurnal creatures by nature, it is strange that she would do so. She accuses her trait of 'being young', but other young beings of her species are not known to defer to such extremities, at least to my knowledge.

The human Shad arrived a short time ago, leaving his Kybernetik Kluster at the labs for temporary stay, as the human must be somewhere the robot cannot be. Shad has on multiple occasions caused Sophie's vital signs to change (Sophie calls it 'anxiety'), and in most humans, this proves to be fatal later in life. For this reason, I have dubbed the human Shad Croly to be a negative environment in which Sophie has chosen to put herself in.

His Kybernetik, however, seems to fit in as easily with the humans as with machinery. Adoma seems to share this trait. Perhaps their programming is different? Upon asking Sophie, I caused her the vital sign anxieties, so I must not ask again. She says she will fix me, but I do not understand what is in need of repair.

I will ask the Doctor upon his return.

"Sophie!"

The young woman looked up from her desk, carefully watching the young Kybernetik bound down the stairs from her room. She'd gotten used to Alia's enthusiasm in saying, 'Sophie': apparently, her programs were mimicing Howl's Moving Castle. Either way, that seemed to be the extent of the Kybernetik's livelihood, and the moment the robot reached her, she slowed to a calm walk.

"Sophie, I would like to know how I am supposed to interact with the other Kybernetiks. I don't have any data, and find myself inefficient in what Kluster calls 'fun'." Alia tilted her head, her good eye glowing softly as it usually did when she was awake.

Sophie sighed, ruffling the young girl's hair. "Alia, you're just fine: it's just that most people your age want to run around and play, and you're more into study. There's nothing wrong with that."

Alia tilted her head again. "Want? What is it to want? I don't think I'm familiar with the sensation."

Sophie blinked, withdrawing her hand as she pondered. How could she explain what it meant to want something? Especially to someone devoid of human emotion? "Well...it's like when you don't know something, you want to find out the facts, and know the whole story. It's when you don't have something, and you...um...decide to have it."

Alia nodded, then turned, starting up the stairs back to her room where the computer was. Halfway up, she stopped, and looked back down to Sophie: "I think I want to know what this want is supposed to feel like."

Sophie leaned back, looking up, and smiled weakly. "Well, it's a start."

In Which Alia Receives a Face...

Silverah
This was so... Boring, thought Darsaisas she kicked her heels against the bottom of the bench. It wouldn't have been nearly as bad if someone else was there, but the fact was she was alone in the lobby, it was raining, and she knew that she couldn't leave until Silverah and Nereida got back.

Whenever that was.

She frowned down at her feet that wouldn't touch the ground even if she really really tried. Why did she have to be so little? It wasn't fair. Everyone else she had met was bigger than her! Even the other Kybernetiks her own age!

Which reminded her that she'd heard Kluster had grown which just made her more angry. When was it going to be her turn? After all, she and Kluster were the same age if she remembered correctly. Something like two days apart. Or one. Or none. She wasn't exactly clear on the subject.

But they were close enough that it wasn't fair he was already grown and she was still a tiny little... whatever.

And this was still boring.

Sophie C. Bell
Alia wasn't the type of person to get bored: in fact, it wasn't in her programming, and therefore impossible for her to do. However, she did realize the lack of ability to do anything, seeing as how Sophie had gone to take a nap and all the paperwork was already done (for once). She had no need to watch any DVDs, as she had already memorized and analyzed the content, so she found herself in a vegatative state. However, the lifeless Kybernetik would not stay that way for long: she decided that it was likely that some papers were not filled out, and thus began her journey to the front lobby.

The kybernetik paused before she entered the room: it seemed another was there. "Walse," she confirmed in her cold voice, before stepping silently over to the main desk, searching for anything Sophie could've forgotten to do. Her good eye skimmed over the report that Kluster had grown, but did not think too much of it: she'd already seen the plans, and was soon going to look at the plans for her own older form. It seemed Walse was ready for growth as well, and she logged this information away for later analysis. But, for now, she turned to the other child, as she knew that her programming was closer to that of a human's and as such would desire attention.

"Have you come for a routine checkup? I believe the Doctor is away," Alia said, bringing up the only relavent information she could put into a conversation. "I can wake Sophie, if you'd like, but I'm not sure she is qualified to upgrade you yet."

Silverah
Darsais looked up, somewhat startled by Alia's sudden entrance. It wasn't that they didn't know eachother -they had met over the summer- but Darsais was always startled by the other child. Her manners were strange, her face even stranger.

"No, I'm not here for a checkup."

Stupid, she berated herself. Of course Alia was here. She lived here.

"Mom's busy today, so she left me here."

And besides, if Sophie had built Alia, the prospect of having her doing whatever a growth involved was remotely terrifying.

"What do you do around here?"

Fallen_kitsune_thief
Alia nodded, then walked closer, despite the fact that the other Kybernetik was showing signs of anxiety, and sat down on the bench, looking around the room. "I do some of the administrative paperwork for Sophie, or I study what she calls 'DVDs', so I can understand better how to interact with others." A soft, barely audible whirr meant that Alia was deep in thought, and it was a moment before she turned to look at Darsais again.

"Would you like to come and see? Perhaps you can help add to my notes: I don't quite understand my deficiency just yet."

Silverah
Anything was better than sitting here, thought Darsais. She nodded. "Sure," she said, hopping off the bench and facing Alia.

Suddenly she felt short again. The other girl was easily almost a foot taller than her.

"I do hope to grow soon, though," Darsais added quickly, as if defending her height. She and Alia were both prototype generation, so there was some co-misery. Darsais was much too short, Alia was much too strange. Or something like that.

"Where are we going?"

Fallen_kitsune_thief
Alia looked at the girl before walking, seeming not to notice the strange height. "I believe that when I grow, I am supposed to have more human-like qualities, to better assimilate into the general populace. It's more for Sophie's contentment than mine: my only needs are a higher processor."

They kept walking down a clean hall until they found a door, similar-looking to the others. "This is the Rec Room," Alia explained, opening the door and then walking towards a television set that looked like it was modeled from an old computer monitor. Strewn about were countless child movies, and Alia paused, motioning to the girl.

"You may pick which one we view, since I have memorized them all already."

Silverah
More like wreck room, thought Darsais, looking at the boxes. They were strewn about so randomly that it looked like a tornado had gone through.

"Can we watch Toy Story?" Darsais asked, picking up the box and holding it out towards Alia.

Darsais had seen Toy Story a few times, but she wasn't feeling particularly adventurous.

Sophie C. Bell
"We can watch Toy Story, if that's what you'd like. I really have no preference."

Alia gently took the box from Darsais's hands, opened it, and inserted the DVD into the drive. Just as the Disney logo appeared on the screen, the young girl made room for her bottom among the strewn boxes and sat down, clearing away some space for the dancer as well. It wasn't long into the movie, though, that Alia became curious, and tilted her head back to the other Kybernetik.

"I wonder...is that what we're supposed to be like. The toys...they're not real people. Does that make us toys?"

Silverah
Darsais pondered the question. It was an interesting one, to be certain. What were they?

"I think we're more important than that," she replied carefully. "Or somthing. And they only wake up when there's no one around. I sure don't feel like a toy. Do you?"

Sophie C. Bell
Alia seemed to ponder the idea for a moment, then turned her attention back to the movie being watched. "I don't have any data on what I'm supposed to feel like, so I don't know if I'm supposed to feel like I'm a toy or not. However, based on the current facts, I would assume that we're not. Neither of us is small enough."

Doc Albert
This was too excellent a chance to pass up, Doc decided, hearing the two little girls talking upstairs. Getting them both into the lab for growths would be impossible, considering everyone's hectic schedules. Here was a golden opportunity to finish their growths! (And everyone knew they were both more than ready.) He took the stairs two at a time and paused in the doorway.

They were watching Toy Story. What would the psychological implications of that be?

"Girls?" he asked cautiously, as not to make them panic.

Sophie C. Bell
Alia didn't seem to be affected by the sudden noise, and turned expectantly as she looked at the Doc with a blank stare, the movie still going on in the background.

"Hello, Doctor," she said in a plain voice, already assuming his reasons for coming and standing up. "Do you need just one of us, or both?"

Silverah
Darsais also turned around and looked at Doc. Doc was, in her experience, most often associated with upgrades - growing up, waterproofing, etc. So his presence could only mean one thing.

"Are we gonna grow?" she exclaimed excitedly.

Doc Albert
Doc chuckled at their enthusiasm. "Yes, I need both of you, and yes, you're both growing. Doesn't that sound fun?"

Well, of course not, but they didn't need to know that.

Sophie C. Bell
Alia stepped forward, very sure of what was to occur. After all, Sophie had already shown her then blueprints for her own growth, and she'd gotten to see the file on Kluster's. Her own growth would likely run just as smoothly, so Alia had no objections.

Sophie came in behind Doc, rubbing her eyes and waving to Darsais. "You guys are ready, right? We don't want to hurry a change if you're more comfortable where you are."

"I am content with any body, but would like to test the new modifications you have made, Sophie," Alia replied, walking out of the room, then looking back to Darsais with an expectant stare. "I would also like to observe a Kybernetik growth for myself, for data purposes."

Doc Albert
Doc placed a hand on each child's back and steered them out of the room. "I'm sorry, Alia, but for complicated reasons I can't allow you to do that." He nudged the girls down the stairs and towards the lab.

"Now if you two will wait here, I have a few things to arrange."

He darted into the lab. There were ominous sounds of moving furniture until his return.

"Come right this way!"

He led the girls back into the lab to a divided clearing with two small tables in it. He helped Darsais and Alia up onto them and then retrieved his handy-dandy energy drainer.

"I'm going to shut you two down. It'll be like going to sleep." He waved the baton in front of both of their faces systematically and looked to Sophie, "Help me move the chips," he instructed, pushing the room divider back. On the other side of it were the new bodies, both looking older and more fine-tuned than the previous models.

When the chips had been moved and placed in the correct bodies, Doc moved the old ones behind the room divider.

"You're not to tell them under any circumstances what happens to their old parts," he threatened Sophie. "Or I'll take away your wood burner."

Giving the words a moment for emphasis, he then waved the baton across the girls' faces again. They awoke. Darsais went right to work inspecting the legs, which she found were just like the ones she had asked for.
