Technically, 150 is the genius level and requirement for Mensa, this really cool program for people in the top 2% of IQ tests or something like that.

90-105 is about average; sometime 90-110, all depends on where you look.

Under 70 is technically "retarded" sweatdrop

All that said, IQ is not always an accurate measure of intellect 3nodding
it's very accurate, it just isn't precise.

As far as actual intelligence goes, I have to say that I disagree with you. A number of studies have shown that Ashkenazim are the most intelligent race; I'll let wikipedia do the explaining arrow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashkenazi_Intelligence

It is true, however, that Ashkenazim are more likely to have diseases of some sort than the average race. This is due to both:

a) The very long period of time in which Ashkenazim have been marrying only with other Ashkenazim;

b) Our intelligence itself. I once read somewhere that Tay-Sachs is at least partially due to Ashkenazic intelligence.

As for depression, I agree that it is probably more common among us than among Goyim. Why? Not sure. If we really are the most intelligent race, then it may be because of that; Ernest Hemingway once said "Happiness in intelligent people is one of the rarest things I know," and I've gotta say, I quite agree. It might also have nothing to do with our intelligence; it could be just something in our genes from so man years of only marrying amonst ourselves.
um...whatever happened to spharadim?
She mentioned something about Ashkenazim in her post so I figured that was what she wanted to know about. I don't really know much about Sepharadim anyway sweatdrop

take autism, for example. huge intellect, in some cases, at the cost of basic living skills. there are poeple who can tell you what day of the week any event in human history ocurred on, but couldn't for the life of them deal with the simple social interraction involved in purchasing a candy bar from 7-11

Maybe they are so smart they figure it isnt worth it? ninja

People with autism have miswired neurons and nerves that make their senses all jumbled. They can't percieve body language and connotation because they don't seperate between parts of their environment. (I've done extensive research on the topic.) Social situations become extremely nervewracking for those who can function.

and Nathan, you're thinking of Autistic Savants. A lot of people with autism are of average intelligence but severely stunted emotional development.

And Autistic Savants often only excell in one area, IE Mathmatics or Music.

..or in a limited, but related range of areas.

but autism is an extremely varied subject. i was referring to asperger's syndrome in particular.

Asperger's is a related disorder, but it's not nearly as severe. Lumping it in with autism is a huge overstatement. sweatdrop

I guess... but it's hard to talk about all Jews in general because there are a number of races sweatdrop

well, I wouldn't really say "races." A different word might be best there.

This gives me an idea for discussion:

Do you view Jews seperately or as a religion/race/whatever as a whole? Why? 3nodding

I see us as a religion with different ethnic and cultural subgroups. whee

I think that despite the races, we are one big nation, even though we are all different, thats just like anyone else. I don't think those types of differences are a reason to split the group. Okay, so we have different minhagim, different prayers, thats fine. We are still united under the holy Torah, in the land of Israel, and in the future, under the same king in the built Jerusalem, amen! mrgreen
