Thank you to those who said they don't hate those people. I'm a little late on saying this, but instead of flaming them, it's better to help them to get to know the band. If they like thier new stuff, then show them Green Day's older stuff. I know the feeling you guys are all talking about, but it isn't like we own Green Day's music. We don't have the right to tell people that they aren't fans simply becuase they've only heard AI. AI is a good CD, and just becuase the majority is starting to recognize Green Day's talents (even though they're only scratching the surface), doesn't mean that we should shun new fans. That's just my opinion, and I'm sort of just reiterating what Kill, Broken Image and Yellie previously stated, but yeah. That's what I think.

Im 50-50 on it. It annoys me because all they know are either American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and/or Holiday and they claim to be "big fans." But you gotta do your best to make them listen to their older work. Here's a very good example: I have some friends who force me to always play American Idiot for the three previously mentioned songs. Now, no matter how hard I try to convince them too, they will never listen to their older work. The point to just continually keep at it and hopefully they will give in...if not, force em! twisted

precisely help them. i said no also. it's better to teach people of the music they seem to love and make them love it more. so they know more and enjoy more. i enjoy what you've stated and the people who know green day know is indeed because they new record sold more than ever before.
but so what? it is a great record fit to be enjoyed by many. and as you have stated Alien, they only know the basics of the cd.. so why not lead them deeper into the world of Green Day... or at least show them the way there.

me hates them too, is exaclty what happens in my life every DAY, i have to live with this poseurs obsessed with BOBD and telling me! hey green day's an awesome band !"!! i love them sooooo muuuuuuuuuuuch!

it was the same ******** situation in the concert also, when they sang their AI tracks, everybody sang...when the CLASSICS started, it was reduced to half of the people singing.... that's when you realize when there are the true fans..... and more.......
when they sang Knowledge... ^^

Dont you hate those guys who say their 'big' Green Day fans, but are really lying. EXAMPLE:My best friend's little sister Jordan says she likes Green Day but only knows them by American Idiot.plus she thought they were a new band! eek Green Days been out before she was even born! And i really hate it when i sing a Green Day song out loud and she tries to like mumble along with the words. She doesnt know Green Day and she shouldnt like them cause she wants to be cool. whenever i go to my best friend's house shes always following us.She says shes a Green Day fan but isnt. If you dont know GD then dont pretend you do.
..............teenybopper

My friends little sister is exaclty like that 3nodding and its is soooooooooooo annoying, she knows nothing about Green Day yet she still walks around thinking she knows it all... silly little kid.. ill have to show her all the other CD's so she can know atless alittle bit about them sweatdrop

I totally agree with you there! All my friends say there Green Day fans and thats ok i don't have a problem with it but c'mon they can't even name every album, they only know them for American Idiot and dont believe me when i say they have 9 albums. Idiots i tell ya!

eek Seriously?! They don't BELIEVE you?! xd That's not cool, yet somehow hilarious. I'm sorry for your friends...and you having to put up with that...lol.

sn0w1et - eek They played "Knowledge" at an American Idiot concert?!?!?! crying I NEED TO GO TO A CONCERT!!!!!!!

I agree to an extent that these new fans are annoying. I definitely don't think they should call themselves fans. Example: I like Hawthorne Heights. I don't know the guys' names. I. Am. Not. A. Fan.

I agree with what Yellie said, too.

Instead of just yelling at them (unless they think they're a huge fan...then just bitchslap them and prove them wrong by challenging them to a trivia match, complete with band trivia, album trivia, song trivia, stories behind the music trivia, lyrics trivia, etc. xd ) show them older music if they haven't heard it.

I always knew I liked Green Day...and I knew they'd been around for a long time. I didn't know many songs though. I knew "Good Riddance" (but not the title) and "Minority" when I actually started really listening to their music. My brother was playing Warning on the way to work...we listened to "Hold On" and I stole the CD about a week later. I fell in love with it. Later, I remembered about "Basket Case"...that was a song I'd heard but never really knew too well. I figured out "When I Come Around" was a Green Day song. xp I was like "OMG...WOW. They're awesomer than I could have ever fathomed!! eek "

I got my friend to download more songs and "She" sounded familiar. As did "My Generation." I was like "There is no way THEY wrote that song...that's much older, isn't it? sweatdrop " and I got confused. Heh...duh. Cover. xd "American Idiot" was on that CD, and I fell in love with that song, as well as the rest of their songs. (I hadn't heard it on the radio, because I was always listening to Warning and whatever other CD.) I got "American Idiot" next...so granted, I only became a fan right before AI came out. Through Warning, though. (Then I found out my brother had Dookie too, but my mom had it because she confiscated it a long time ago, and I burned International Superhits" from my friend, who was also starting to become a fan through me. And it kept going and going until now, when I have all of them.)

Point being - everyone has to become a fan somehow, whether it's through someone they know, or through the radio/TV, magazines, word of mouth...whatever. So we already know they like SOMETHING of Green Day's...just get them to listen to more stuff.

Sigh...when my obsession started...I had two friends who had never even heard of Green Day. The one who I burned IS from was one of them. *sigh* I don't think I'll EVER have a friend that DOESN'T know who Green Day is. Not after I'm done with them, anyway... *cackles*

Sorry for the excessive long-ness of that post... sweatdrop

Yellie
eek
I am going to get SO flamed.... But hear me out...
Okay, I used to be one of those "I hate the Green Day bandwagon jumpers", but I started thinking about it, and we're not being very fair... I mean, a lot of us got into Green Day circa "Dookie" and "Warning", not many of us liked Green Day before then (Sorry to the ones that have...). Now, we were jumpers on the Green Day bandwagon when "Dookie" came out (I'm using "Dookie" as an example here.) because all of the people who liked them since "Kerplunk!" or another early album hated us because WE were being the people who like "American Idiot" today.
Sure, they like Blvd, but they'll either get over the fad, or they'll be fans like us. Don't hate them because they just got in Green Day. I admit, I was quite pissed off when I saw the amount of American Idiot shirts when I walked into Dublin, but only because I wanted to be the only one I knew who listened to Green Day..
Just... Embrace the fact that Green Day are getting new fans and are becoming more mainstream. Just because they're getting more popular doesn't mean that they'll change their music entirely. At least I hope not...

Thus endeth my mini-rant!

I'd like to thank you for writing that because finally someone is sticking up for me. I am 12 years old and I was 2 when Dookie came out. At that age all I cared about was Tots TV, not music.

I'm a fan since American Idiot and I'm proud to say that. American Idiot got me into Green Day and I like the older music and the new. I do know the band members names and their birthdays and trivia and song words etc. etc. and I know that Green Day is a lot more than just Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

I think it's unfair for people to say that you can't like something because of your age. Does that mean that anyone born after 1955 say can't like The Beatles (well, you had to have been born before them to remember them, but whatever). I think it's unfair for people to say that you can't be a fan because you were still in nappies when they did their first tour of your country.

Why can't I like them? Why can't I call myself a fan? I can sing along to 30 odd Green Day songs and can name many more than that. Why?

I thought that music was about expression and having fun and getting a message across and enjoying yourself. Some people seem to have forgotten that.
PostPosted: Wed Mar 30, 2005 3:12 pm

Well, I do hate them....it's quite annoying, actually. I just don't understand the fact by how can you like the BAND because of ONE song. They have many, many songs, not only BoBD. I do try and introduce them to some of Green Day's older music, but they won't listen to me. gonk They call their older music gay and corny.. My obsessed friend won't believe they have 9 albums. They only knew 7, from Dookie to American Idiot. I guess 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk was too far back. O_o

So yes. I do get annoyed by them, and hate them, and I do introduce them to Green Day's older music. It just counts if they even TRY listening to their older music.

I just get frustrated at the point where they just like the band because of ONE song. O.<

I keep repeating myself too much.

They play it at every show. They invite a drummer, bassist and a guitarist from the audience to come up onstage and play the song while Billie sings and such. It's awesome 3nodding

Sorry about the off-topic post. I already gave you my point of view on this subject, so I'll spare you the repetition by shutting up now xp

I did a trivia thing it was fun! i totally won, the only thing they knew was what Green Day stands for, not why they are called Green Day and such.

Yeah, that's what happens nowadays. I haven't been here for that long compared to some other members, but I can still remember back to a time when only 5-10ish threads were updated each day. It was so much easier to keep track of things. Now people post billions of times in upwards of 10 threads a day, and I still feel then need to read every single post made around here. It gets tiring sometimes xp

I believe we should welcome new fans any way we can we can't hate every thing in this world. But do you really want to welcome some prepy blond girl that just likes American Idiot, that knows nothing about Green Day and that they have been in the music industry for a while now ? Think about that, there are some people that just don't fit and like one thing and call themselves big fans.

And by blond i don't mean like hair colour. I'm blonde haired.
