Synopsis: Kikue arrives on the Island, met by Dr. Duvert, and receives her first injection.

Kikue shifted painfully in her seat, her eyes closed. She had lost count of the hours she had been in the air after realizing she was flying over California. Having never been to the States, at first it was fascinating, until she realized how much it looked like all the other land down below. She twisted a bit in her seat again, yukata fabric rustling. She tightened her good hand over her violin case protectively. How much longer? And otousan has no idea...

She silenced the thought. She couldn't think about her father right now. This had been the only way.

Moving quietly onto her side, Kikue's eyes fluttered open. The infinite ocean stretched out below the helicopter, on all sides. She'd never liked the sea very much before, but she liked it even less now. The sea accounted for all these hours suspended above the earth trying to get from one country to another. Still, the sun steadily heading towards where it would sink into the waters cast an orange-yellow glow on the distant waves. It was pretty. If only it wasn't so big.

Kikue supressed an inward sigh, looking out over the water. She knew she didn't believe in her mother's gods, but she still hoped that if they had any power, they would make this end soon. She had never wanted a futon more in her life. Closing her eyes to the sun, she tried to picture where she was going. At any rate, she hoped there was a bed ready for her.

Finally, as if in answer to her silent prayers (and the equally silent helicopter pilot), the monotony of the open ocean was broken as a large island loomed into view. It was primarily covered with thick, lush jungle with a large mountain looming out of its center. Beautiful beaches hugged the shoreline where the land met sea. It seemed beautiful, like something out of a photo book, untouched. That is until the helicopter rounded and the shade of the mountain showed a cluster of buildings, a concrete facility built into the side of the mountain itself a ways away, and finally, as the chopper flew over pencil-line roads - a square black tarmac with an H in the center of it.

A jeep rested at the edge of the landing pad, a man with shock-white hair seated in the driver's seat held his hand to shield his face from the wind whipping his hair about. His already loose ponytail was dessimated by the surging winds as the helicopter touched down. He straightened his dark clothing, and as the rotors slowed their speed and the door opened, stepped forward to greet the new arrival - another Japanese woman sent from the Japanese Feral Labs division. They recently had begun sending files to the island, and Apparently Moreau was enjoying playing catchup with some of the prospective islanders.

"Miss Yamamoto, I presume?" The man said with a smile as he offered her assitance down. He had caught up with her file in the car - she had sustained massive damage to her hands and had come seeking therapy. Moreau, however occupied, had not yet specified her serum.

Kikue stepped carefully down from the helicopter with the man's help, a hand moving to keep her long black hair in check. Her violin case stuck out noticeably, but she covered it with an arm, holding it tightly to her chest. A shoulder bag hung loosely over her shoulder bumped against her legs as she looked over her helper and the Jeep he seemed to have taken. "--Yes," she got out after a moment's pause and a near bow, looking around the helicopter pad. Quickly glancing back to the man's face, she smiled wearily. "For as long as it took to reach here, sir, it's breathtaking..."

The lush fiolage standing tall from what had been cleared for road was more than impressive to her. She had never seen anything like this. Excitement bubbled up in her chest, but she kept it under control. She shouldn't even be here, but Father had pushed her to this. Yet the exhiliration in seeing something so pristine -- all of it was almost like a dream.

Kikue walked with the man away from the whipping helicopter blades. She still didn't know his name, or even really where she was. She was under the States in the islands, somewhere. Not wanting to be imposing, she merely gave the man a curious yet polite look as she reached the Jeep with him. He must work here, surely.

He helped her down gently, retreived her bags from the dark-skinned dour-faced helicopter pilot and loaded them into the jeep. He waited until he had escorted her away from the deafening helicopter motor before continuing to speak.

"My name is Dr. Sabin Duvert. I hear that you've probably had a very long flight from Japan. But I assure you, just a few more formalities and we will get you to the duplex that you will be staying in and you can take your rest." He smiled, settling into the driver's seat and turning the ignition.

A doctor! Kikue was surprised to be met by one, and not by someone else on staff. Watching him for a moment as she settled herself in her seat, she wondered if her condition warrented the escort of a doctor -- but surely there were those with more extensive injuries. Still, it surprised her. "Dr. Duvert?" she echoed, catching herself before tripping on the pronunciation. She hadn't heard French in so long, it seemed.

She gave a consenting smile, glad to hear that there would be no more flying. "It was very long," she agreed, as if to herself more so than the doctor. Watching the trees and the plants open up in abundance around her as the drive started, she relaxed into her seat even with the occasional bumps in the road. She had survived the planes, and the helicopter. She could handle a quiet drive just fine.

Sabin drove more carefully than his usual breakneck pace through the narrow dirt roads. It had been a long day for him as well, a few awkward conversations, and playing catchup had kept him haggard.

"Yes that is correct. Your pronounciation is very good." He responded as they drove.

The jungle passed them by - giving her a very upclose look at the flora of the island. The trees were lush and green - certainly nothing like her home country. Brightly colored bird flew - especially stirred by the rumble of the jeep, and hoots and screaches of monkeys could be heard from within the shade of the canopy.

After a few minutes of driving, the large gates marked with the Feral Labs logo crested into view before swinging open to allow the jeep admittance to the courtyard/parking lot.

"You can leave your bags here for now. We're going to go ahead and give your hand a preliminary examination, and a cursory innoculation against some of the more nasty diseases of the island. Then you can rest for the evening and get yourself settled."

Kikue had sat in quiet awe at the passing of such plants and creatures as she had never seen before. Even in Japan, she had never witnessed the diversity or colour she saw now, and it fascinated her. It was beautiful.

She nodded in understanding at Dr. Duvert's directions. A hand examination was nothing to look forward to, but if she was intent on her therapy, she knew they would have to be constant. Turning her bandaged hand in her lap, she gave it a painful look-over. The memory of how it had happened began to surface, but she strapped it down. The fact remained that this is what she must deal with now, and she would deal with it. Better yet, she would fix it.

Using her good hand to manuver herself slowly from the Jeep, she stood ready to follow the doctor's lead. She had decided she liked him and his demeanour. The thought of a vaccination didn't surprise her in the least. In fact, she might have asked about it on her own, she thought. There was jungle out here, which probably meant some sort of random disease or strain of something. It was the hand exam that she worried about instead, following him towards the facilities from the parking lot. Kikue, you won't complain. This is your choice, and you want to play again. This is how you will.

Sabin parked, and helped her out of the jeep and into the mirrored front doors of the lab, that slid open on their approach.

Inside was an elegant, plush lobby. Leather couches, wooden tables polished to gleaming, and an empty secretary desk. Several out of date magazines littered the tables, and the window to the side showed a beautiful seascape through a path in the jungles.

Sabin, however, didn't pause in the waiting room, instead leading her through a double-door into a sterile hallway that led to an elevator, which also slid open as if anticipating their arrival.

"Floor 8" Sabin spoke clearly before returning to her with a smile. He was quiet, and she seemed to be nervous, but that was certainly understandable - even without knowing the truth behind the island. The file said that her family was unaware of her leaving the country for therapy, that the injury was likely caused by a family member. It was a very convenient setup for disappearance. She was a virtuoso violinist, but her damaged hands made her previous skill impossible. She moved yet, despite all of it, with a confidence that was very different than the quiet, meek Japanese woman from the rural area that had come through her less than a week previous.

The elevator moved with a lurch, and seconds later opened its doors directly into an examination room.

Kikue had noticed the lack of personnel in the lobby immediately, but chose not to point out what was probably already very obvious to the doctor himself. It was conceivable that there wasn't much need to staff the lobby regularly; perhaps outsiders came intermittedly and not vrey often at that. She logged away the information in case she should need it later.

The technology amused her, such as the doctor directing the elevator by his voice alone. It seemed very Japanese to her. There were strange technologies at home that came out constantly, some helpful and others a bit meaningless; this level of technological savvy being in the States impressed her. She hadn't expected it.

Upon seeing the examination room, Kikue was suddenly conscious of her crushed hand. Watching the doctor, she forced a weary smile, knowing that this was standard protocol. Still, handling her own hand was painful.

She followed him into the room, seating herself in the examination seat. She then looked up at the white-haired man's expression, rolling up the sleeve of her yukata. "Vaccination or hand exam first, doctor?"

Sabin went to the corner of the room, flipping a switch on one of the pieces of machinery, and getting out what looked like a heavy smock.

"I figured we'd do the examination of your hand first. The injection can leave your arm sore, and sometimes cause a mild fever for the evening, so I'd like to be able to take you back to your duplex to recuperate after that. We were just goign to run another x-ray here, get it on file, and with our equipment. It shouldn't take much of your time at all, and should be relatively painless." He spoke gently, proferring her the lead smock.

"Just put this one, and sit here" He gestured to a small chair behind a 'cubby' in the wall " .. and lay your hand down on this surface." He gestured to a small block.

Kikue pulled the smock on, sitting down quickly in the spot Sabin had indicated so as to keep the smock in place as easily as she could. She breathed an inward sigh of relief hearing that the "exam" was a preliminary X-ray, not a physical exam. Relaxing, she sat very still so as to allow the doctor to get the best possible picture.

When he seemed to be waiting for the X-ray to do its work -- she heard a small buzzing sound from the equipment -- she smiled up at him and tried not to think of what the picture of her hand was going to come out looking like. "Are you from France, Dr. Duvert?" she asked, knowing the question sounded a bit spontaneous, if not random, but she felt it was the best way to conceal her nervousness over her own injury. She tried to take her mind of the X-ray and what it would surely show inside of her.

Duvert...and his hair was white, although he didn't seem very aged. She wondered if it had been his own choice. There was so much to think about, to avoid nervousness. Although she was probably only showing it all the more now from her inquisitive comments, she could not restrain herself. The many hours in the air and the stress of her decision were finally getting to her. "I lived in London as a child and traveled to France occasionally; it is very nice there," she added. Unnervously.

There were more beeps and the sound of the equipment warming up.

Sabin called back to her between a few more series of beeps and clicks. "Yes, actually. Can you distinguish my accent?" He said with a small laugh. "Some things are hard to kick. Though I am impressed if you can detect it if english is not your native language. Or is it my name?"

There was a humming then, that lasted a moment, and then Sabin stepped back out. "Just move your hand like this now..." He repositioned her hand gently on the back, so that it was as flat as she could make it wihtout straign. "And one more x-ray."

He stepped back into the booth for a few more clicks. "So you have visited? I have been to London as well, but it has been some time. And What part of France did you see? Just Paris, or did you see more of the countryside?"

Kikue smiled, her mind temporarily off herself and the X-ray. "Your accent is faint, but I can just hear it. I learned both English and Japanese when I was small, because I was born in London." Memories of the past washed over her, and she suddenly found she was genuinely interested in the doctor's background. She nodded in his direction. "Your name is the real tip-off," she added, smiling still.

Following his direction, she sat still again for the last X-ray. "My parents were mostly interested in Paris, but we did visit the southern countryside for a small amount of time. It was very peaceful there," she said so that he could hear her, as she inspected the bandage around her hand. She would probably need it changed again soon, but it was fine for now.

The thoughts of the countryside she had visited lingered on the edge of her mind; especially visiting a very old church she couldn't remember the name of. It had fascinated her, she remembered. The name would come to her.

"What interested you in working so far from home?" she asked curiously, realizing after she said it that it might even be the same reason that she was herself so far from what was home. Strange they, and probably others, should end up here, together. She thought on that quietly for a little time.

There was another series of clicks, as Sabin continued on.

"Ah, yes. I learned English when I was small as well, but it was from my father, and I am certain that he was not without an accent. But your early travels and learning certainly explains your familiarity with English."

A few more clicks, and a disembodied chuckle from behind the screen. "Yes, that is definately another tip-off, but names can pass through families despite distances or places of birth. I moved to America a long time ago, and studied there. There were more opportunities for me - I was from a very small town in France."

"Annnnd... there we go!" He stepped back around. "X-rays are over, and now just the innoculation."

Kikue smiled, standing up and carefully slipping off the smock to fold it as best she could it and hand it to the doctor with her good hand. "I understand what you mean about opportunity," she said. "I feel that way about London. Once I regain motion in my hand..." She paused, deciding she would tell him of the desire that she hidden from her father for so long. "I want to play in the orchestra in London." She looked up at Sabin, determination commanding the features on her face. Suddenly aware of her own revealing of her feelings, she relaxed and looked away for a moment. "Well, my father is not very conducive to a learning environment, you might say." That was a bit understated.

Rolling up the sleeve of her yukata again, she walked to the exam seat and sat down easily. Thinking to herself, her head leaning on her good hand, she wondered inwardly not only about the doctor but also her father. There was nothing for it. This was the only choice I had.

She looked towards the far wall, lost in her own thoughts, the French countryside occasionally pouncing on her mind. What was the name of that church?
