I play mostly by ear or off the chord symbols, never tabs and rarely notes. I like to play my own style, so I usually make things up off the chord symbols or, as I end up doing half the time anyways, just don't use music at all.

i am learning more and more theory all the time. i have a hard time with standard notation my dyslexia screws me up on it. i can read it but not site read it. tabs are irratating in the fact they do not give you timing which is important, but i usualy don't use either because i usualy try to learn all of my music by ear. and then i memorise it asap so i don't have to use any sheets of any kind, paper annoys me hanging around in my case

If possible, I like to use tab to learn the song, and then use sheet music to get the timing & rythym down. Most of the time I just end up using tab. sweatdrop

In my experience tabbers usually make some effort to note timing (the dozens of conventions out there make it a b***h at times though, I'll grant)...
Usually though...
E|-12-12-12-12-12-12-12-12- is a measure of 8th notes (some separate bars, others take a more linear approach and just run them all in a line)
e e e e q. e E|-12-12-12-12-12-------12- Another system some like to use, the example reflecting 4 8th notes followed by a dotted quarter and another 8th (the same spacing concept is usually seen in the former system)
Honestly, it's nothing you can't figure out if you have a recording to work along to, which you really should have before you try learning any song from sheet music of any sort...

I like to play my own style, so I usually make things up off the chord symbols or, as I end up doing half the time anyways, just don't use music at all. He basically summed me up in that post. I use my knowledge of the theory behind chords (i.e. what notes go in Mm7 chords) and form basslines from that. I also take the style of the music I'm playing and apply the theory behind the style to create basslines.

Depends what i'm doing really.. If i am on my double i always have sheet music, and if i am playing something which is 'written' for band (ie: concert band or anything, if you guys have those wherever you are.. Like your high school bands i guess), and stuff like that... Usually on electric i just use tab, because i have mostly already worked it out by ear, and just need abit of backup and can't be bothered trying to think hard about it lol

They just don't understand bass *sighs* lol
