I actually just finished reading The Phantom of the Opera (Leroux's version) yesterday. I liked it. It is very different from the musical (which I love/love to sing) but I don't hold it against it.

My thoughts on why Andrew Lloyd Webber cut the Persian out were that the Persian saves Raoul from killing himself in the torture chamber, which, let's face it, Raoul wouldn't have made it that far to had the Persian not been there to help. Ergo, the Persian made Raoul's character seem more incapable and "wuss-like." Lloyd Webber could make Raoul more of a hero and more likeable by the audience if the Persian weren't saving his a**.

I think the books is a lot better in French. You may need to learn French and use a dictionary but it's totally worth it.

There are many books that I would like to read in their original French texts. And I have been thinking that a dictionary would be useful in brushing up on my French...
