That's just sad. I've know about those since second grade....

I've known about them since I was short too. That's sad that no one knew. I would think the Seven Wonders of the World would at least be recognizable to people, especially that one.

Anyway, the topic is 'Is the general intelligence of people dropping or am I some sort of geek by knowing about the Hanging Gardens of Babylon?'
i think the general intelligence of people is dropping. i'm currently a junior, but i should be a sophmore and i dont study at all but people automatically think im a geek ( i mean it! i cram for every test i only studied for one test last year and with assignments all you have to do is do the reading, but some people are so lazy that they don't want to do it)

Yami no Hitokiri
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Great Wall of China, The Alexandria Lighthouse and The Great Pyramids are four I can think of. Does anyone know the other three?
I'm just taking a shot at this, but isn't the Roman Coliseum one of them?

Thank goodness for google.

Google tells me ( http://ce.eng.usf.edu/pharos/wonders/list.html , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Wonders_of_the_World) that the seven wonders of the world, in chronological order, are:

The Great Pyramid of Giza
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
The Colossus of Rhodes
The Lighthouse of Alexandria

If I don't know about the Hanging Gardens, then I'm not a nerd... crying

I find it rather insulting that you assume just because someone doesn't know of the Hanging Gardens that they're automatically unintelligent.
I for one hadn't heard of them before reading this topic, and no doubt know a thing or two that most here don't.
I know, it's one of the wonders of the world, but that sort of thing just isn't taught in schools these days, you have to find out about it yourself. That's something that can be pretty hard to do without knowledge of the seven wonders to begin with.

Anyway, yes the general level of intelligence is definately dropping, but the fact that less people know about the Ganging Gardens isn't much to base it off.

I've heard of them. What's his name made him for his wife so she wouldn't be homesick or something like that.

King Nebuchadnezzar (Morpheus's ship in the Matrix is named after him) built it for his wife about two thousand five hundred years ago, using the Archemedes screw to water the plants.
Just to be difficult, I'd like to say that that's still really only a theory. It's the most plausible theory, but nonetheless it is still a theory.

Anyway, we're getting into somewhat controversial depths here. Firstly, how does one define intelligence? Is it the ability for abstract thought? Is it a large amount of knowledge at one's disposal? You can't define it in such simple terms, I've tried. I consider myself to have quite an extensive general knowledge but the fact I can't do calculus raises the fact whether I am or not 'intelligent'.
Just to add another variable into the works, perhaps it is America where standards are dropping, or wherever it is you come from.
Personally I think the aquistion of general knowledge static. It's not changing. There are always people who won't know what year the Battle of Hastings was or what it was, or what it's significance is, that's just an example.
Anyway, the fact that one does not know a bit of trivia does not make one unintelligent. That's just an absurd notion.

Okay, huge text time.

This question had nothing what-so-ever to do with ANYONE's intelligence.

"The hidden gardens of Babylon" is something one would learn in history, and just because you do not know the history doesn't lesson your intelligence in any matter. It's like calling someone stupid for not knowing every bit of knowledge that has to do with..say... another country, for example. We, as intelligent individuals, do not need to know the history of every little thing to surpass in this world. Sure, it can make one more knowledgable in a certain area, but it doesn't make one "dumb" in any case. You don't have to know who jesus is to be smart. You don't have to know the history of the cival war to be smart. You don't have to know who... "King Tut" is to be smart. Intelligence is on a COMPLETELY different line than that. I could go more into depth if needed, but this seems well to get the point accross? Unless I am mistaken.
