So we all know then that we CAN NOT face-out that term permanently, but do you guys think we can do something at least to lessen the use of it?
As for strategies, I think Izumi is on to something with ignoring it. We can fight it all we want, but isn't that just helping to make it all that more effective as an insult? It shows that we continue to fear it and everything that has become associated with it. Like most terms, it will dry out in terms of shock factor and most people will move on to something new.
I'm not suggesting we get complacent about the abuse of words. We should fight it by eliminating the negativity associated with it, and the only way we can do that is continuing to be visible, seen, and heard. As being GLBT becomes more and more acceptable, as other minorities have seen, the stigma and slander will be forced to fringe groups, which we are seeing more of now. Sure, it's holier-than-thou p***y-footing to appear more PC than we really are, but if there were a better solution I'm sure we'd be all over it by now.
