Vague Catspaw um, you do know that broken is by seether, right? it only features amy lee. im not trying to say that being gay is wrong or anything... sweatdrop yeah, so... on a related note, just so this post isnt entirely irrelevent... crap, i already said everything i wanted to say. Well, if hed been Evanescence, that would be a miracle or a sign. The divine doesn't work that way. The ambiguity is what leaves enough room for faith without proof. There's an episode of Futurama... Bender becomes like a god to a colony of tiny beings that inhabit him while he's drifting through space. Then he meets a being that may be God, who tells him, yes it's a tough job... but "when you do things right, people won't be certain you've done anything at all." fair enough. im going to back out of this conversation right now, though. as a great skunk once said, "if you cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all". im a fairly devout athiest.

If I remember correctly, that is... Yes... but the monks don't... get it now?

I went to a private Catholic College. I had a monk teach my Intro to Theology Class. He said you can't take the Bible at it's word. Not after 2000 years. He said that the Bible's been translated and re-translated many times. In a lot of the languages it was translated to, there weren't the same words (like Hebrew to Latin for example). So, with each translation, the Bible drifted further and further away from the original manuscript (which was mysteriously lost after the first copy of the Bible was translated). Not to mention that, at the times it was originally translated, only monks knew how to read and write, so they ended up making their own commentary on the stories in the Bible.
In another class, at the same college, we studied the Book of Job. According to my professor in that class, the Book of Job took 800 years to evolve into the form we read it today. Which is true. If you read it carefully, you can tell that there's three different rythms (sp) in the Book of Job. So, after my Intro to Theology and Great Books: Ancient Literature classes, I've come to realize that the Bible is just a book, meant as a tool to shape our lives, but it uses the opinions of *man* not God, to do so. Hence why I became Agnostic.

I've noticed that being christian and being gay is a really hard combination...i mean i've just seen a few friends, that are so scared to tell their parents or anyone else because they are afraid they will be disowned...they're parents were christain's...
I hope everything works out for all of you!
Dont Let anyone tell you that being Gay/bi/lez is bad! Its who you are. And if they cant accept you then so be it. the only way you'll be able to get over your fear is by accepting yourself. heart 3nodding

Conventina I've noticed that being christian and being gay is a really hard combination. I've realized the complete opposite. Most people do not reject homosexuality because of their religion. Most are against it because of their social brainwashing, and they use religion as their excuse. As a Latino in a Catholic family, I experience plenty of resistance, but it's mostly in the machismo areas of life. Religion doesn't enter into a lot of the issues. This is not the same for all, of course, but Christianity is not your enemy. As such, Christian claims that homosexuality is sinful are ridiculously easy to defeat. The enemy is people, and their enemy is ignorance. By educating and opening eyes, we can take people out of the idiocy of homophobia. Christianity need not be abandoned for that. And in response to an earlier comment, I'm a monk, too, and I fully agree with your monk teacher. I think, however, that we would both disagree with your contention that it is "just a book," though this is not an argument for this thread.

Vague Looks like Gnostic monks don't take vows of celibacy. Franciscan. There haven't been any Gnostic monks since the Inquisition. xp And you're not required to. It depends on your rank. I can't rise up any further unless I take a vow of celibacy, and I'm not particularly interested in one. I do, however, enjoy the access to all the books. 3nodding
