That's what I figured. I just wanted to make sure, since you never stated it explicitly, instead just saying that they could be distinguished via homotopy. So I'm wondering how they can be distinguished via homotopy as opposed to geometry.
I was in (a rather boneheaded) error. There is a way of doing it homotopically, but only after the priveleged frame has been identified, say geometrically (but this makes doing it trivial and useless). The particular method I was thinking of previously, however, is wrong.
