I'd say, as has been said, Sam is more book-smart. But in the episode where they split up, Dean was doing okay on his own. Til he got captured and needed his brother to help him. The two of them cannot operate on their own.
John believes he can and in the end goes back to his boys and together they ...almost kill the creature. So he needs his boys too, but obviously he's proved he can survive longer than the boys by himself.
But if you really look, in like every episode Dean saves Sam's life in one way or another. But in the select few - Phantom Traveler, Faith, Devil's Trap, Sam pulls his end. And in a few they save each others asses, like in The Benders.
so all in all, the three need each other and as a whole are a much better hunter then seperately.

i think hunting works better as a two man team... after sam left, it was dean and his dad.. and sure john had to go do his own thing to protect his sons.. but then dean and sam became a team... and it just works cause they're both so different that it covers all the.. 'supernatural' bases.

X.x.XArtemus~SamaX.x.X Hmmm,I wouldn't know,seeing as I've never seen the show,but it does sound interesting to me,I should watch some time,other then that,I can't say who's the better hunter seeing as I've never seen the show to make a desicion. sweatdrop

Dean looks at the problem and deals with it. Sam Deals with the emotional part of it (except in ep. "the Deavils Trap" where they switch roles for some reason)

It's hard to say. Dean has problems with diguises. though sam is weak. So I guess you could say that Dean is physical and Sam is emotinal and the brains, stuff like that.

What kind of disuises, and what kind of weekness? Well Dean has problems with acting and Sam seems to be the one always getting attacked like he's always screaming for help and Dean has to come to the rescue. Dean on the other hand can be seen through like he's always known as a fake automatically, so Sam has to come and settle things and get the information..so they are kinda of even. It depends on what type of stituation it is. Cause Dean's good with one and Sam with the other.

like in the scarecrow ep.. where dean realizes that he needs his brother... "my brother could give you this puppy-dog look, and you'd just buy right into it." dean's more rough and tumble... and sam's all cute and trusting...
