See, form what I heard, a black hole made at below that mass will be unstable, because it doesn't have enough gravity overall to overcome the repulsion of the particles that make it up - so it will fly appart again.

Then you've heard something that is completely wrong. Once formed, black hole decay rate is inverse-square of the mass. A black hole the mass of Mt. Everest would be barely enough to power a few light bulbs (even assuming perfect efficiency), if that. Larger black holes radiate even less energy.

In other words, it needs to be beyond that critical mass when it forms in order to be stable.

No. The Chandrasekhar limit is the amount of mass a star needs to gravitationally collapse into a black hole (the main factor preventing this overcoming the neutron degeneracy pressure), which is about 3/2 solar masses--and that is so many orders of magnitude beyond Mt. Everest I really have no idea why it's even an issue. Even this says nothing about black holes formed by other means than gravitational collapse.

stay on topic people!!!!! what do black holes have to do with the moon?

isn't anyone excited that we're going into space again? and more aggressively? I know I am.

I think its great NASA's going to the moon again! But until they fix the tile problems we should send robots.

They're planning to use a two stage rocket developed by a private company, which is similar to the rocket that the Russians are using. Basically it shoots off, then once it reaches the atmosphere, it shoots off again. So they wont be using the space shuttle.

I dont really see the point...
I dont think theres anything new we can find out on the moon (experimentally) that cant be figured out theoretically here on Earth. Call me close-minded if you will.

Although, the subject of Space Travel is far more interesting than moon exploration, and far more useful.

On the subject of black holes, I dont feel brave enough to completely adopt a theory... so I'll do more reading.

thank you.

But yeah my sentiments are. Get our **** boys in the air first. we can't get to the moon without getting us in the air. Strap my butt to that unstable H-bomb i don't care how I get me to space i'm more than happy to go. If i die i died while advancing the human race. In my opening speech of my senior project i had the judges imagine they were future space turists that had a bad accident and they all blew up as they lifted off. I also said they served their species well. there will be disasters, people will die, it will cost more money than some are willing to think of paying, but in the wise words of Professor Hawking "go to space or die."

oh yes i suggest the new moon vehicle as a Leo. ^.^ don't argue about it twisted I will defend my Leos to my death.

the thing is we are planing on using the moon as a stepping stone to deepspace. with the moons low gravity it will allow us to use less fuel to get into deep space. So launch crew and supplies from earth to moon via smaller space vehicle. then when the get ready to go to deep space they would leave the moon in a bigger rocket specially designed for space travel. it just allows us to build a better space ship without the worries of gravity or heat shields or anything like that. wee my crazy space city may have a place in the stars after all.

The moon is a waste of time and money. Its also dangerous with minimal payoff. Asteroid mining is the most economical route to space. The break down:

Just one of over 200 KNOWN Near earth Objects contains enough metallic ores to match all that has been pulled out of earth throughout ALL of human history. Thats copper, iron, gold, uranium, and such

There is enough water in an asteroid (cause thay are likely commit cores) to raise a whole pod of whales. WHALES. Let alone your GM soybeans

The moon is at the bottom of a gravity well. Which is inherently dangerous to get through. Asteriod's fields are so minimal it poses no inherent safty risks.

If you completely harvest an asteroid and leave only the junkie silicates behind, you have roughly the composition of the surface of the moon.

The one thing the moon does offer is Helium 3 atoms. These have been proposed as a fuel for fusion reactors, but I don't feel warrent an utter comitment to the moon.

But the moon is very pretty, and may be reason enough to live there. But living in artificial gravity may be better for the ol' bones.

It would be interresting to find out if humans can cope with the extreme conditions on the moon. i don't think that sending humans to the moon is neccessary for scientific research though.

do you think that the americans actually landed on the moon the first time they supposedly sent people there???
i mean technology has advanced a lot in the last 20 years, and i don't think that the technology humanity had then would have been sufficient to make people land safely on the moon.
i mean, even now missions to the moon fail through some silly little mistake, and we have far better equipment now, than we had then.

Uh, we were a more ambitious people back then. NASA took a crap-load of risk at that time compared to nowadays where if a tile falls off of a shuttle, everyone freaks and they stop all projects. Whereas the moon missions had incidents such as the Apollo 8 fire and the famed Apollo 13 mission, neither of which kept us from going back to the moon.

If you are going to say that we in fact did NOT go to the moon at all, how do you account for the Saturn V rocket launches that thousands watched in person and millions of people watched on television all around the world? It's undeniable that they launched them so if not to truely go to the moon, then why did they spend the billions of dollars to send those collosal vessels into space?!

Denying the successes of the Apollo missions is absurd. We need to appreciate the incredible feats we accomplish instead of just criticizing them... "we" being a generation of young people that didn't even EXIST at that time. Who are we to say such things?
