i love the kaworu/kaoruXshinji pairing. i noticed something: in the anime the one time you see kauru's name it's spelled 'kaworu' but on all the official websites and in the credits (i have it on dvd and i taped it) it is spelled 'kaoru'. anyone know why?
A'ight, this is a weird one to explain...
Kaworu's real name isn't Kaworu, of course. He named himself. In Japanese they have two ways of saying 'o.' There's the letter 'o' (お/オ), and the particle 'o' (を/ヲ). To tell them apart (and sometimes, to add a little bit of an artistic touch to music), particle 'o' is written as 'wo'. When Kaworu was naming himself he used the particle 'wo' where he should have used the letter (He named himself カヲル instead of カオル). In pronouncing his name, there is no difference. He just spelled his name incorrectly. Honestly, though, I have no idea why they have a 'wo' in katakana, since that's the language used to refer to words that aren't Japanese (or onomatopeia), and so a particle would never be used. I suppose it's to be used when writing Japanese words in katakana for emphasis.
ANYWAY, that's why Kaworu's name is spelled two different ways. It's still going to be pronounced the same way, but his name is spelled Kaworu, for sure.
Actually, looking it up it appears there is a name Kaworu listed, but this program is the only place I've seen it. They also say that hiragana would be a boy's name, but katakana is a girl's name. I'm not so sure I trust them on this one.
