I don't know how foriegn this is considering I was raised in southern california- but I'm pretty competent in understanding spanish- while i'm not as good at speaking it- I can get my point across.
I know a few insults in various langueages, Japanese, Scottish Gaelic, Norwegian.
And I know a few other random- non-insult words in norwegian.
Oh and I'm fluent in Elizabethan English (don't ask- just don't ask)

We have some Gaelic speaking television programmes on TV a couple of nights a week, but they are usually pretty dull, and there's never anything remotely risque in them.

I speak English fluently (it's my native language anyway) and I know a lot of Spanish (but not fluently). I am attempting to learn Japanese as well, but it's slow going. I also know some American sign language (not sure that counts for anything). I know some words in Polish and German, but not enough to count for much. They're mostly foods and body parts. xp

I've been taking Spanish for the past 6 years and I can't hold a decent conversation. There are several languages I want to learn, but I can't retain any of the information for a long time. No matter how interested I am about the subject I forget everything I learn after as soon as I hand in the exam.
Maybe the problem is a lack of interest. Originally I wanted to take Japanese, but was told that the Japanese course would be cancelled due to a lack of student interest. So, I took Japanese instead, and later found out that enough people had an interest in Japanese that they had to add a Japanese course to the schedule. I didn't want to be inconsistant so I stuck with Spanish and tried to teach myself japanese through an online course. Needless to say, it didnt' work. I've learned more from watching anime.
My friend is fluent in French just from taking a couple high school courses. I feel so stupid. :: sigh :: I hope to be fluent in Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and French; but I doubt it will happen. I just don't think I have the mind to pick up foreign language. Maybe I'll take courses in language when I graduate from college; so see if I just need a classroom setting, more time, and a constant foreign language influence (anime + korean tv shows + french movies = my hobbies)

Don't be down on yourself, different people learn in different ways! I bet if you were to go to Spain or South America you would be surprised at how quickly you would become fluent!

I eventually do want to learn Cantonese. My father is Chinese, but he didn't want to force it on us, but I do want to eventually go to China and I don't want to not speak the language.
I only know some basic Spanish from 3 years in high school and I took a year of German in college.
