Elle finds Lirael
Part One

On the fifth day of being in her new home, a tent, Elle stumbled across something that she wans't sure how to cope with.

A tiny pale baby wrapped up warmly, sitting on her couch.

Elle collapsed in an armchair oppasite the baby and stared. She was a teenager, a TEENAGER. Babies just didn't appear for teenagers. She hadn't even had a first kiss or a date or a ...and she had a baby sitting there?

Had someone left it for her mum, and left it in the wrong tent? That made sense, her mum always attracted babies. Out of all of Elle's 'sisters', only the twin had been really hers by blood.

The baby was fast asleep, so Elle moved closer to peer at it. It was a girl she thought, but she wasn't sure. Babies all looked the same. It had such pale skin though, just like her own, and a hint that it would one day have black hair. Elle gingerly pushed aside the hair to see that there was a strange little mark on the forehead. And on top of it all, the baby had two black wings.

The baby opened its eyes and stared up at Elle.

She stumbled back again as if she'd been stung. It looked at her! And it wasn't her mum's type of baby. Her mum's babies were all blondes, and with skin that was rosy... this baby looked too pale to be anything like her mum's usual babies.

Elle noticed a note near the baby, and snatched it up.

'Elle- I am Lirael, the abhorsen.' It said on the front, and there was clearly a little more inside... but that was all Elle could stomach.

"Lirael?"

The baby blinked a few times, yawned and went back to sleep.

"What is an Abhorsen?" Elle asked herself, flopping back onto the armchair. Whatever it was, she hoped it had a habit of growing really quick.

"Mum?"

Neith looked up at Elle. She looked flustered and pale... and for someone who was like Elle, that was a look that was nearly impossible to achieve. Seh also had an arm behind her back... and a smell coming from her. Neith was suspicious. She raised an eyebrow at Elle, "Hmm?"

"Well... remember how you got Kia? And you never asked for her, or expected her, she just turned up?"

"Yes?"

Elle pulled out the arm from behind her back and quickly put the tiny baby into Neith's lap before her mum could react.

Lirael blinked at Neith, before falling back asleep, clearly not at all concerned by the smell she'd created.

"I didn't ask for her, and I wasn't pregnant, she just turned up! So you need to take care of her while I go and get toys..."

"What!?"

"...from the storage, and I promice I'll be right back, you have nappies for Aquene so they'll work for Lirael as well, and bye mum, thankyouloveyoubye!"

Elle vanished out the tent flap and was gone.

Elle jogged down the road for the bus stop, tugging the cloak and gloves on for protection as she made her way down the road. The days were brighter and she'd already coped a bad sunburn a few days ago. It used to bother her, all these layers, but she was getting used to it now. And she had to avoid too much exposure to a type of light.

That light was pretty common in shops and malls, but Elle didn't care. She had learnt how to shop online, and most of her clothing and belongings were bought that way. True, it was hard to buy clothes that fit perfectly, especially with a tail and with headwings to work around, but Elle had figured out a solution to that too. She could now do very basic alterations on her own clothes.

Life was starting to become routine. Like she'd never known a life any different. One bag of blood from the GMFC for lunch, protection from harsh sunlight, two to three hours a day of sleep. (Or more hours sleep if she exhausted herself with the magic she'd been dedicating most of her life to. Which had become a regular thing.)

So the appearance of a tiny baby on her couch was something Elle didn't appreciate. At all. It meant she couldn't practice magic to the point of exhaustion as she used to, because what would the baby do if she was asleep for over thirteen hours? Elle was just glad that she had toys left still, Lirael wouldn't be lacking in those.

And how was she supposed to explain to Lirael about her 'diet'? Or explain to her that other kids didn't eat like that so she wasn't supposed to talk about it?

She hadn't even wanted kids. And Elle didn't exactly have much money to afford them right now. She had been saving for her own car. She'd caught the bus so that she could afford a taxi on the way back.

The bus ride was slow and bumpy. The storage facility was quiet as well, and Elle started to dig around in the boxes for some of her old things.

There was a doll from Luna's mum. A purple dog plushie, twice the size of Lirael. A small blue and white cat plushie. A folded yellow blanket, Elle tossed that one back in the box, that would clash badly with Lirael's pale self. It clashed with Elle now too, but Elle made a mental note to give it to Tiegan. It was a beautiful blanket really, it deserved to be used.

Also in the boxes were several of Kia's things. She'd sent them for Aquene and Elle. Elle was sure Kia would be delighted at the idea of another baby, that fa'e probably wouldn't have stopped breeding if she'd had the choice. Elle put them back. If she needed them, they'd be there.

There was a weird canister. Elle put that in her pocket. She had no idea what it would be, but she decided to test it out later.

Then with arms full bags containing toys, Elle returned back to the property.

Elle hadn't had time for much lately. Including her magical studies and practice. She'd been flustered by this change of life, this horrible full time job with no pay, a 'job' that she'd never really been able to appreaciate before now.

And after taking care of a baby, then a toddler as the little strange girl suddenly grew on her, she had a new respect for her mum. Elle had grown up as a part time middle child, part time eldest child, with half-sisters all over Gaia. She had never really understood how strange it was to have so many sisters of so many various breeds, species, races, types... whatever people called it, and of so many different ages.

But that didn't mean she had to admit that her mum was right sometimes...

And what had made her task somewhat mroe difficult was that there was no guide online for this baby. This Lirael, who Elle still had trouble calling 'her baby' under the strange circumstances, who was beautiful but REALLY strange. And that, coming from a teenager who could quite honestly claim her genetics to be 60% elf, 40% living vampire, with several different other races including dragon blended in, that coming from Elle? That showed just how bewildered she felt about this little girl.

It wasn't that Lirael wasn't sweet. She was an adorable little girl, quiet like Elle was, inquisitive and curious, and already showed traits that Elle admired in someone. Elle knew from witnessing her mother's children, she could have had a much more difficult child to take care of than Lirael. If she'd gotten a child that took after Kia...

It was other things. Things that you'd never be able to see... but you could feel them. Elle tried so many times, but there was either no words or too many.

On top of that, Lirael apaprently had a sort of 'familiar' with her. THat had come as a shock. When Elle had first seen it, she thought she was seeing things. Whatever it was, it rarely let Elle catch a glimpse of it.

But that had been a while ago. Those things had slowly worn down Elle's surprise till she was used to everything. Even the creepy feelings, and the horrible task of toilet training.

So when she'd woken up and had found a child-aged Lirael standing on the third shelf with several picture books wide open around her on the floor, it shouldn't have come as a big shock. But it did and Elle stood there for several minutes, staring stupidly at Lirael's new size.

Lirael stared back, a tiny little red being sitting on her shoulder, the book in her lap forgotten. When Elle didn't say anything, she stared back down at the book. Lirael couldn't read any of the words, but she understood the pictures.

Elle snapped out of it and carefully asked, "Would you like me to read to you?"

The dark head shook, one small hand pushed the page over.

"Would you like breakfast?"

Again Lirael's dark head moved, this time in a nod.

Elle stared for a few more seconds before wandering off to find something for them both to eat. When she'd come back with yogurt and some fresh fruit, Lirael had climbed down and was now sitting placidly in front of the TV to watch Spongebob.

Elle was so surprised by the sudden change in growth that she barely stopped to think about what else had changed in Lirael with the new age. She gave Lirael the food and as they sat to watch the TV, Elle kept sneaking looks at Lirael. And slowly the other changes sunk in.

Lirael now had a strange leather strap down her front. Her hair was adorable as always with little black pigtails, there was a little red mark on her forehead. She spoke too, though Elle hadn't heard any words directed at her, spoke to the red familiar that was taking out the shape of a tiny humanoid. They were short childish words, Lirael still struggled with some of the letters, but it was speaking.

Later today she'd take Lirael over to see her mum, Elle decided, before returning her attention to Spongebob.

In all of her hectic weeding and building, Elle hadn't forgotten Lirael. Not at all... but Lirael did find herself spending half her time with the teenager guardian and her 'nanna'. Both seemed interested in unimportant things such as using strange tools to pull out plants... and it didn't leave them much time to give the little girl attention.

That might have upset some Pae'il but for Lirael, with Neith and Elle's rich collection of books between them, it suited her just fine. And sometimes when they were clearly going to be occupied for hours, she would even go for a walk to Barton by herself. It was cheap and most books she found were funny ones with too many words or men and women cuddling on the cover but sometimes she found a really interesting book. One about things that she couldn't even understand yet, the words were too big, but there was something about the paper and the pages and the images that made Lirael know that front he moment she'd set eyes on that book... she had to keep it.

Her stash of nicked books had growl considerably by now. Lirael kept them all in the top of her Nanna's house where a tiny gap between the roof and the ceiling was only several feet high. That's why no one had bothered with it when they saw it, but it was ideal for her and she loved it. It was clean now and her piles of books, though not many, were already making little labyrinths around the low area. It was a maze only she could understand, an order of books that only she would be able to decipher.

That was where she sat now, ignoring a spider that crawled down her hair, clinging excitedly to her latest steal. This one had been a particularly hard one. The person who had it hadn't wanted to give it up and she knew that if he found her he'd be SO angry. But she hadn't liked him anyway. He made her blood crawl.

The best thing about this book was that it didn't open much and that made her curious. If it didn't want to open for her then what was it hiding? She'd tried everything to pry the pages open, everything, even a chisel and hammer. The pages weren't damaged, the book didn't budge, and it left her aching with the need to figure it out.

But it did open to some pages. The words were too big and the writing too small for Lirael...but that wasn't a problem. She just had to learn how to read better. And till then the book could stay safe in the most centremost of her labyrinth, protected by the maze she'd created.

It was Halloween soon. Halloween and still no bell.

Lirael stood in front of her book, eyes squeezing shut. First gate. First gate. First gate...

The water was so cold. Lirael's tiny body started to tremble, but she clentched her teeth shut to prevent herself from making any sounds. For some reason, she felt like making loud noises here wasn't the smartest idea. And it was grey too, the light was like she was ...well, she couldn't describe it. Just that the light was grey. But she didn't have time to focus on that.

The current was very strong. The child stood there in it with quite a bit of effort, almost dragged down, but she forught it. She knew if she fell, she'd be lost and swept into death.

Lirael was tempted to keep walking, to walk to the first gate... but she didn't have any way to defend herself. And she was becoming exhausted from fighting the current. She had to get out of there again.

She pushed herself back out of death again.

It was such a brief time in the first gate but Lirael's adrenaline was pumping and her body felt so tired and weak. Lirael fell onto her little bed with a sigh of relief. She had discovered the river. Now all that Lirael needed to do was to teach herself how to create her first bell...

She would have it by Hallowen. She HAD to have her bell by Halloween.

Lirael tugged the covers over her and fell asleep.

Dear diary

since halloween and finding the orb i decded to not let anymore things destract me. it was fun but the egg thing went anyway so what was the point?

i found more books in elles shelf. she thinks she hides them so well but i know how to search better than she hides. and i took some of her money to get more books. but none are as good as the book ifound.

i went into the river before halloween but i have been too scared to do it again. it was so strong and it almost pulled me under and i have been trying to make my legs and arms stronger by using books as weights. my book that is great isnt opening any further than gate one. But that doesnt matter because i can't even last in gate one for long yet. but i have been practicing making things out of wood for the bell. i dont think im very good at it. Maybe i can find someone else to make it for me.

but i have found i can do magic of a funny kind. you say a symbol. and it comes out. something tells me i need to find the book on it before i play with it too much. i think it could be dangeres too.

My weight lifting is working good so far. but still not prepared to go in just yet.
